I realize this is kind of news, but giving these people a forum to speak is just pointless.
Zero hour, Michael. It's the end of the line. I'm the firstborn. I'm sick of playing second fiddle. I'm always third in line for everything. I'm tired of finishing fourth. Being the fifth wheel. There are six things I'm mad about, and I'm taking over.

Dobson accuses Obama of 'distorting' Bible

http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/06/24/evangelical.vote/index.html

Quote(CNN) -- One of the country's leading evangelical leaders is accusing Sen. Barack Obama of deliberately distorting the Bible and taking a "fruitcake interpretation" of the U.S. Constitution.

The transcript of Obama's speech shows that he says the country can't really be run by the word of the bible alone (which, and bare with me here because I know that this is crazy, CONSTITUTIONALLY SHOULDN'T EVEN BE AN OPTION UP FOR DISCUSSION) and then he went on to cite sections of the bible that could not apply to modern life. This is another non-issue.

Oh, please... Let's have another debate on this board that pits non-religious Obama supporters against the "others."  I like being outnumbered 100-1.

Seriously, there is even a part of the bible in the old testament that tells you that you must take mildew to your priest.  Frankly, the hilarity of the old testament just further proves that Jews are a little gonzo.  Christians are supposed to believe that the new testament somewhat replaces the old, but most of them only do that when convenient for their argument.  Oh, and the new testament, if taken literally in all places, can be a little "outdated" at times too.

Politicians should stay the hell away from religion, and evangelicals should stay the hell out of politics.  And certainly, all of us iceholes should probably stay the hell away from both.  So much for that.

It all sounds so simple. Too bad people can't ever keep their nose out of places where it doesn't belong.

Dogs have the same problem on a more literal level.  Frankly, I'm starting to think house pets are superior beings to most humans.

My dog took two shteins while I was running with her today. Then she collapsed on the floor and didn't budge for the rest of the morning. She can't hang.

QuoteBut I think the important thing is it's not the facility at Guantanamo, it's the adjudication of the cases of the prisoners who have been held there without trial or without any adjudication of their cases. So the frustration is not the fact we have a facility at Guantanamo, although that certainly becomes symbolic. The frustration is, is: What are we going to do with these people?

Now, I know that some of these guys are terrible, terrible killers and the worst kind of scum of humanity. But, one, they deserve to have some adjudication of their cases.  And there's a fear that if you release them that they'll go back and fight again against us. And that may have already happened. But balance that against what it's doing to our reputation throughout the world and whether it's enhancing recruiting for people to join al-Qaeda and other organizations and want to do bad things to the United States of America. I think, on balance, the argument has got to be--the weight of evidence has got to be that we've got to adjudicate these people's cases, and that means that if it means releasing some of them, you'll have to release them.

Look, even Adolf Eichmann got a trial. I mean, these--we are signatories to numerous agreements on human rights, against torture, universal declaration on human rights, etc. So that means we have to do something with these people. And I hope we can move that process forward very soon.

- John McCain, Meet the Press, June 19 2005.
An ad hominem fallacy consists of asserting that someone's argument is wrong and/or he is wrong to argue at all purely because of something discreditable/not-authoritative about the person or those persons cited by him rather than addressing the soundness of the argument itself.

BUT, he was a uniformed soldier in a war.  Non uniformed persons trying to kill soldiers or civilians can be shot, no appeal, no attorney, no CNN interview.

wtf?

so soldiers are held to a lower standard than civilians...and who are we to determine who is a soldier and who isnt...we can bomb the poop out of another country and call it a war but when the people we are supposedly fighting attack us they are not soldiers because they dont have a fancy uniform?

Actually his point is that soldiers and civilians have rights. These "combatants" aren't even wanted by their own country as they'd as soon bomb an Egyptian prime minister as a US president. Hence they're kind of in limbo and not considered soldiers or civilians. That being said human rights should apply in all cases or we're no better then they are. McCain having been a POW feels the same way.
