Making handguns illegal doesn't get rid of handguns, it just makes the people who own them criminals by default. It's the same problem that drug laws face. They don't get rid of drugs, they just make everyday people criminals.

The difference is that the Second Amendment explicitly grants the right for people to own guns to defend themselves and their property.

no it doesnt....the 2nd amendment had nothing to do with an individual right to protect ourselves from criminals....thats a byproduct of our collective right to keep and bear arms....the bill of rights was only outlining our rights versus the government not each other

Its stupid that a criminal can have a weapon illegally, yet if you had a license for a handgun, its still illegal?  One other thing, when this was enacted, what did they do with the handguns for people who stayed?

Simple solution - Repeal the 2nd amendment. We did it with the prohibition amendments. It's an amendment, not a part of the original Constitution.

OK, fair enough. But the right of the people to bear arms is explicit and that's good enough for me. I never thought this ruling would go this way.

a gun ban + a majority conservative court and you didnt think it would be overturned...since this case was first brought to the high court youre literally the first person on either side of the issue ive heard that thought it would hold up...truth be told even a liberal court would have acted in the same way


im as left as you can get and this one doesnt even bother me that much...all its saying is you can now have a handgun in your home...its not like we are gonna now see a repeal of all kinds of gun laws...its really not some sort of crazy ruling...the right to have a gun in your home is not inconsistent with saying you cant take that gun wherever you want

some people think less guns is a good thing...equating rulings like this to protecting yourself against crime is whats preposterous...this is a constitutional issue not a self protection one...stop acting like youre the head of the north carolina militia gearing up to fight off the red coats

if this was about protecting citizens against crime then you would be allowed to bring your gun wherever you go because last time i checked most crime doesnt occur in peoples homes...id also like to hear statistics on how many people stop a crime in their home each year because they carry a gun...im guessing its infintesimal and certainly not a reason for overturning a ban like this

Despite my rabid pro-gun opinions this is pretty spot on. The number of crimes that are stopped/prevented by individual gun ownership is tiny. To me, though, the question is who cares? If it stops one person from stealing one other person's shtein that is enough.
