George Bush's message to Americans after 9/11:

"Go take a vacation!"

Rather than say, "hey, maybe we are just a little bit to blame for this mess" he tells Americans to forget their troubles and spend, spend spend!

Brilliant.  Just what you'd expect from a C- student.

The government is a reflection of the society it governs and this government has done nothing but act with extreme arrogance for far too long.  A complete realignment of priorities is in order, and it's sad to say that neither candidate still standing will bring any real change.  Obama will be better for this country than McCain in that regard, but let's not kid ourselves here; the powered elite won't allow for a meaningful change in policy because it wouldn't benefit them in the least.

And that's where we are.  We're like the French Aristocracy at the beginning of the 19th century or the Roman Empire circa 476 A.D.  Our time is almost up and the sad thing is it didn't have to be this way.

W. and our country is hated big time. I never knew how much until I went to another country and saw it for myself.

My experience outside the US (and with foreigners here) is that "Americans" are not hated nearly as much as "America".
A subtle point, but worth noting.
Anyone but Reid.

Diomedes

I have had the exact same experience...and in one case (Serbia) it was a country the U.S. had recently bombed.  Everyone was happy to meet me, curious, unbelievably generous and welcoming...but they can't stand American foreign policy or leadership.

And really, who can blame them?
There is considerable overlap between the intelligence of the smartest bears and the dumbest tourists." - Yosemite Park Ranger

I'd like to go back to being from the United States and not from "America". As is everyone else on these two continents isn't entitled to call themelseves that.

QuoteStop driving a wasteful car.

Agreed, which also nearly means not buying an "American" car.

Blame them?  farg, I agree with them.  Probably why we got along so well.

I, of course, had tons of fun explaining America's foreign policy to the undereducated youth of Australia.

The man. The myth. The legend.

I'm not ripping on Obama for saying it, but did't Bill Cosby say something along the same lines and get destroyed by the black community?

Cosby was a lot harder on the mothers.
An ad hominem fallacy consists of asserting that someone's argument is wrong and/or he is wrong to argue at all purely because of something discreditable/not-authoritative about the person or those persons cited by him rather than addressing the soundness of the argument itself.

cosbys comments were much more biting and covered a wide variety of issues in the black community...and yes some people in that community resented them

Why would some resent them?  I didn't see or hear all the comments, but his criticism on the black community was about how to improve their collective lot in life, wasn't it?  Why would that be frowned upon?

cosby was ripped not just for what he said...but how he said it....cosby was loud insulting argumentative and generally insensitive.....barrys critique was thoughtful pointed and tactful...pretty much the exact opposite in tone from coz

Cool.  I'll have to read/listen to the Coz to get what he said.

Jeb, despite the unfortunate hick name, would have been a slightly better President than his brother.  That said, I'm never voting for a Bush again.

Please refrain from the "omg McCain's just another Bush" bullshtein.

Thanks.
