The draft thing boggles me.  Would it be like the current recruiting of college athletes from high school?  A recruiting season starts, and teams are scrambling to pick who they like and sign players?  We would see some rich-ass 22 year old kids - even more so than today.

No way the owners opt out.  The poison pills would kick every one into high gear to get a new CBA in place.

Yes, the draft would go away and it would be a "highest bidder" situation.

Some kids would be richer, but without the money set aside for rookies under the salary cap, I suspect the vast majority of players currently getting drafted would either make a lot less or never make it into the NFL.

Keep in mind that getting rid of the salary cap also gets rid of the salary floor. No such thing as vet or rookie minimums.

I highly doubt that the NFL will play football under an expired CBA, so it's rather irrelevant anyway. The small-market teams and many of the players would be financially crushed. There would be a lockout.

By the way, I think the real impact of this is on free agent signings. Good luck trying to sign a free agent long-term now, when there might be no salary cap in a couple years.

On the other hand, all the young players look forward to their big payday after they put in their four years and get to free agency.  For any player who has under four years in the league, extending that to six years (and putting the big payday well beyond the end of most NFL careers) is a nightmare. Younger players who won't have four years in before the CBA expires could be looking to sign new contracts before they get to unrestricted free agency.

You know damn right well that the Eagles would shtein their pants without a cap

The Eagles would benefit greatly from losing the cap, compared to almost all other teams in the NFL. The problem is that three of the few teams that would benefit more are based in Dallas, New York, and Washington.

After the Eagles and taterskins on NFL network today, are the Cowboys and Giants. Of course, they are showing the matchup from 11/11, which the Giants lost. I would much rather see the playoff game the giants won so I could see TO cry again.

Owners officially opt out of the CBA. Time to open up that wallet, Jeff.

Hopefully this leads to a new CBA and a little more sanity around player contracts. Unguaranteed contracts where there is no penalty for simply cutting a player or recourse for said player, is a lot of bullshtein.
