I mean, why don't we just make it fifteen lanes on each side??

thats actually a great idea...people traveling long term can stay in the left hand lanes 1 thru 7, people needing to get off can use 8 through 15...BRILLIANT!

yeha, and douchebags doing 58mph will still hang in the left lanes all coast long

They're all the retirees that head to Florida, anyway.

My list of candidate preference is strange.  I'd probably list them as follows, though this is hardly written in stone:

1. Obama
2. Romney
3a. Clinton
3b. McCain
4a. Rudy
4b. Edwards

5. Huckabee

I didn't list Paul because I don't think he has any chance (nor, really, does Edwards).  I can't imagine myself voting for Rudy, Edwards, or Huckabee, under any circumstances, and I'd be really torn if it was McCain versus Clinton.

Widening I-95 is already underway here in Florida.

From Daytona to Jacksonville there's going to be a minimum of three lanes on either side.  What I don't understand is why only make it three lanes?  Traffic is already a mess in areas with three lanes, so why not make it four or five?

I'll never understand why traffic planners put plans in place that will already be obsolete by the time they're physically completed.

Obsolescence is one thing but planned obsolescence is just retarded.

I've never understood that either.  The highway system in the US is one of the most important and most overlooked necessities in our society.  So why is a reactive approach always taken to fixing it rather than a proactive one?  We know what our population is now and we know approximately how much it's going to grow over the next year and 5 years and 10 and so on and so on.  So build the roads to accomodate the population 5 years from now, not what it is today.

Diomedes

widening roads doesn't solve congestion..it postpones it..the roads just fill up no matter how wide you make them.

other solutions need to be found than simply paving the country

Maybe get Natural Selection to hire some help?

Diomedes

maybe stop suckling off the auto and oil industry lobbies and re-invest in trains
maybe increase incentives to car pool, both to indivuduals and to companies
maybe cut military funding and put that money into increased maintenance of existing roads and bridges, which are currently being maintained at the bare minimum
maybe something other than making more and wider roads..

I agree that public transportation is a great idea whenever it's prudent, but you still have millions of eighteen wheelers and other commercial vehicles on the road, you still have commuters out the ass who rely on their cars when public transportation isn't available, not to mention buses, day trippers and vacationers and so on.

Eisenhower's interstate roadway system was antiquated before it even began because the population of the country was roughly half of what it is now.  The system planners didn't anticipate increased volume and they're still making the same mistakes 50 years on.

You have to pave, pave, pave because there's just no other choice right now.  Well, no other plausible choice, anyway.
