I just follow it game by game.  Unfortunately, Geary did not leave the gas can in Ottawa.

i root for them whether they are 30 out or 3 out...even when the team is going nowhere its still fun to follow the individual players...for example bourn this year and of course utleys monster season till he went down...but i also have to be realistic...yous should too...

I hate myself for opening this gate.

But why? Do you have a good reason why we should too?

Mateo was assigned to Reading instead of Ottawa because he can't leave the country  :-D

forget the fact that the phils got lapped by the braves at the deadline i still cant believe the phillies traded for a another woman beater...its not like it was a good player either...a friggin relief pitcher...

But was there much to be had? Gagne and Dotel went for pretty steep prices. And considering that Garcia, Lieber, and Moyer are all pretty much gone next year I don't know if the Phils would be inclined to ship one of their top starting pitching prospects for a bullpen guy. Sure, they could have rolled the dice but then everyone would be complaining that they traded their good, young starting rotation talent and still not make the playoffs.

I mean if their season is pre-determined, i.e. they aren't going to make the playoffs, then why throw the kitchen sink at a reliever if it isn't going to "realistically" change the outcome anyways?

Whatever. I'm tired of debating the merits of this team. They had an incredibly unfortunate season injury-wise and are still playing entertaining ball. I'm just going to watch, root, and see what happens in the end. Am I setting myself up for disappointment? Maybe. But by now I think most Philly fans are pretty accustom to it now anyways. To me, baseball's "post-season" starts in September. If they can stay competitive in August and stay within 3-5 games, then September 3rd-5th, 14th-16, and 25th-27th should have a playoff atmosphere feel.

Gillick's rationalization on the matter was a thing of beauty, though.

To wit:

Quote"In all issues like that, we take them very seriously and I think we're very aware of his situation," Phillies general manager Pat Gillick said before last night's game against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field. "All of our major-league players and minor-league players have undergone counseling [on spousal abuse], and we will make sure Julio has the same opportunity to meet with our people and receive the proper counseling.

"At the same time, we've had four or five injuries in the last couple days, so we thought we'd get him just in case something happened up here."

Haha.  Just great.

it's a shame that Moyer isn't 5 years younger, because he knows what to do out there, but he's just done

its a 7 game trip, cuz. if they win the other king game, perhaps they can squeak out tomorrow or friday to go 3-4, which is decent considering chris roberson is starting.
Zero hour, Michael. It's the end of the line. I'm the firstborn. I'm sick of playing second fiddle. I'm always third in line for everything. I'm tired of finishing fourth. Being the fifth wheel. There are six things I'm mad about, and I'm taking over.

i made my prediction after the first game...1-5 finish

howard cant make that out there
