Take it for what it's worth but this is a blurb from ESPN Insider's rumors page regarding Zito & the Mets:

QuoteSay hello to big bucks
Dec 7 - The Mets are ready to make a major pitch to Barry Zito, The New York Daily News reports. Insiders suggest the Mets will ultimately offer a comparable deal to the Rangers and land the durable lefthander -- despite New York's behind-the-scenes campaign to lower expectations about its willingness to aggressively bid.

"Don't believe anything you hear about the Mets not being there [at six years, $16 million per season] for Zito," an MLB source told the newspaper. "They're pulling a Carlos Beltran here. He doesn't want to go to Texas and he doesn't want to stay in the Bay Area [with the Giants]. And all of his people want him in New York."

According to The New York Post, the Yankees also have checked in on Zito. They are unlikely to meet his asking price but want to make sure whoever signs the lefty spends a lot.

They dealt one starting pitcher (Brian Bannister), who has made all of 4 or so starts in th bigs. He was expendable with Humber, Pelfrey, Maine and Perez as the young arms. Plus, they traded for Justin Vargas last month.

Am I missying something Billy?

Eaglez

I don't think Zito has a New York-type attitude. It will be interesting to see how he reacts when expectations arised and he is no longer in the comfy confines of the Bay Area.

Yeah, I understand what the Royals are trying to do in sparking interest in the hopes of raising revenue and establishing themselves as a bigger market team, but signing mediocre pitchers probably won't get the job done. Just because a team gives a pitcher 55 million doesn't mean he's good.

They joined the "Barry isn't juicing" crowd out on a deserted island.

I'm the Anti-Christ. You got me in a vendetta kind of mood.

PhillyPhreak54

Zito's "people" are pushing him towards NY according to an article I read. So that jives with what IGY said about Fehr.

And I wouldn't want him in Philly anyhow. Didn't want him last year and don't want him this year.

MDS

He can go to NY. Pat Burrell will work the count, increase and pitch count and he'll be out of the game by the 6th inning!!
Zero hour, Michael. It's the end of the line. I'm the firstborn. I'm sick of playing second fiddle. I'm always third in line for everything. I'm tired of finishing fourth. Being the fifth wheel. There are six things I'm mad about, and I'm taking over.
