It should be self-evident from my other statistics, but it is asinine to try to compare the absolute statistics independent of their relevant populations:

2863 dead out of 145,000 = 1.9 dead per hundred
4745 dead out of 300,000,000 = 0.000015 dead per hundred
An ad hominem fallacy consists of asserting that someone's argument is wrong and/or he is wrong to argue at all purely because of something discreditable/not-authoritative about the person or those persons cited by him rather than addressing the soundness of the argument itself.

Zero hour, Michael. It's the end of the line. I'm the firstborn. I'm sick of playing second fiddle. I'm always third in line for everything. I'm tired of finishing fourth. Being the fifth wheel. There are six things I'm mad about, and I'm taking over.

they got the Intrepid out.  I just watched it being towed past my office down the Hudson.  (Office is between 15th and 16th St. on 10th Av)

Very cool to see.

Three times this week I've found something dope on ebay to buy as a Christmas present for someone, been the high bidder until the last seconds, and gotten sniped.

It's discouraging as hell.  I'm fine with being outbid, but it ticks me off that you don't have any idea what the market is like until the auction is over.  You have no idea what the other people will bid, especially for truly unusual things, until it's over.  Kinda makes the whole point of an auction irrelevant.

Bummed and angry.

Then just do the snipin'.

If you see something you want... put a watch on it... and take note of when it ends.  When the time gets close (around 2 minutes), put your bid in.

By putting your bid in early... you only open yourself up to a bidding war... and you'll end up paying more than you have to for that butter joint.

I agree, Dio.  Basically the only way that will usually work is to put a price in your head, and bid that close to the end of the auction.  I've had a lot of auctions I thought I had won be decided by that single bid over my maximum.
