The truth is that there isn't much positive that has happened this season. All of the pre-season hope, which I did not share, has given way to reality, which is that this is a very mediocre team. Some fans of some teams would be happy with mediocre. Any Eagles fan who's happy with mediocre should be lit on fire.

You see, this is what infuriates me.  If they were a mediocre team, and played that way, it would be a little easier to accept.  The fact is that in spurts, they've been completely unstoppable, both on offense and defense.  But they're so inconsistent, largely it appears from a lack of focus, that they've let things slip away.  They are an explosive, SB quality team that is treading water, and that just pisses me off.  Especially since the offense looks way better (even with Avant/Brown/Baskett/Stallworth occassionally) than I ever hoped.
Anyone but Reid.

I am also on the fire Andy Reid bandwagon. I don't mind him being the team's GM, but as a gameday coach he is farging miserable.

Also, all of this talk about how they are a superbowl quality team 'in spurts' is assinine. You are what your record says you are. The Eagles are a 4-3 team that has lost two games because their defense sucks and one game because their quarterback spent the first 30 minutes doing everything he could to hand the game to the other team. Good teams win games against bad teams. Good teams win games when they have 17 point leads. Good teams don't allow game-winning drives to end the game.

This is not a good team.

I disagee. The Eagles are a team with

an explosive, SB quality
offense that needs to put it together the second half of the season, get Stallworth healthy, and get to the playoffs. I still think they can get into the playoffs, and have a chance of winning this division. That wouldn't be a mediocre team.

Anyone who thinks this team is average or mediocre should be lit on fire, and then put out by urination. ;) jk

Im still hoping this team is like a Pittsburg that barely makes the playoffs then hits their stride.

Hard to argue with the end result being the only marker.  However, as I said above, if all they were was mediocre, it would be easier to accept.  The fact that they're either lazy or stupid, and that's the main thing holding them back, makes me want to axe murder my entire neighborhood.

You're mistaking talent and potential for quality. This team has both of those things, but it isn't a good 'team'. Them's the facts, jack.

Next year I'll be far more optimistic.

I know I haven't been posting much here lately and I know this has probably been addressed somewhere else but what the hell makes you so optimistic about next year?

I see more of the same bullshtein with this team and for the life of me, I can't see why next year would be any different than this year or last year.  More of the same, actually, because the same players will be here (save for a few here and there) the fat man will still be coaching (stop laughing, IGY) and Donovan will still be the quarterback.

The defense will likely have a few new starters but everything else should be roughly the same.

What am I missing here, rjs??

Rome. I think the rest of the division will have bigger problems next year, once again pathing the way to an easy playoff schedule ('once again' refering to years past, of course).

No more Tiki. No more Parcells. taterskins being inept. Plus I can see the defense getting better next year with Howard, Patterson, Cole, McCoy, Considine and Bunkley being a year deeper. The same issues will prevail with Donovan and Reid, no doubt, but I can easily see a return to NFC East dominance next year.

I've said that since preseason. But no one wants to hear talk of the future or rebuilding when they have convinced themselves that last year was a fluke.

Reese, I know that you're an idiot and that you haven't been around for long, but for a few years I was a bigger homer than anyone here. (Well anyone other than Phreak and PG, that is.) But I have eyes, and I have seen this team's flaws for the past few years. While others have been blinded by Andy Reid's flaccid johnson, I have seen where this team was heading. I also see hope for the future.

So please, stay off the nuts.

So your optimism stems more from an anticipated downturn elsewhere instead of marked improvement on the Eagles?

Makes sense.

There won't be 'marked' improvement on the Eagles until:
a) Someone creates a mormon who is the greatest receiver ever.
and
b) Someone has the balls to fire Jim Johnson.

OR

Lurie sacks up and fires Reid and hires Brad Childress back.

(I wish I was kidding.)

Until a and b happen or Reid gets fired, this team will be what it is. Good enough to compete and maybe sneak a superbowl in, but never as good as it can be.

Im just glad you have some hope in your life guy.

The fact you say they will be back to NFC East dominance next year is based on the fact that they are a better team than you realized (and consistently bitched about) before the season started along with the rest of us. Im also shaking my head here on how you can even throw in Parcells and Gibbs into the mix as a reason why the Eagles will be dominant as well.

Ill give you the added years with D-line, but keep rubbing those eyes and wake up chief, those two old timers make no difference as its pretty evident

rjs246

The point, jackass, is that with coaching changes time is needed to adjust. As the taterskins (and just about every other team) have proven time and time again. I wish Childress would be brought in exactly to counter that. He could run basically the same offense, only do it far more effectively. (By the way, I said nothing about Gibbs, but good readin comprehension skills.)

I see this year as a recovery year from last year and this is a team with a lot of problems. Some of the problems have to do with youth and inexperience on the team. Those problems should be lessenes next year. The other problems are institutional. Reid. McNabb. Jim Johnson. Salary cap obsession. Etc. Thos won't be fixed, but right now, my outlook on next year is far more optimistic than it ever has been for this year.
