Some clue me in to how this pack of losers is less than 3 games from a playoff berth?

Because the National League is basically AAAA minor league ball right now.

Clearly Abreu and Liddle were the only two cancers in the club house, and now that they have been excised its glory road.

I chuckled, sadly.

Besides the Mets, the Phils won't play another team over .500 the rest of the year (unless the Reds stop their freefall before next week)...

if you arent counting the reds then there are only three teams in the NL over .500 and you can say the same thing about any team in the wild card race

for example houston plays no one over .500 the rest of the year except for stl

the phils are actually at a disadvantage in the race as they have to play the mets who are the best team in the league and they have to play them 10 times...in fact i bet the phils have more games against over .500 teams than anyone else in the national league from here on out

San Francisco is in last place in the NL West at 52-56.  San Diego and Arizona are over .500.  I think a third team and possibly a fourth will be over .500 in the next few weeks.  The Phils are done with the NL West.  Most teams aren't.  They're also done with St. Louis.  Again, most teams aren't...

If the Phillies keep bangin' out 8, 9, 10 runs a night, it won't matter who they play.

Regardless, some teams are gonna get their faces kicked in by the Phillies, and although they have no chance to win in the playoffs, I'd like to see them be spoliers well into September.

[homer]I don't for a second believe they'll make the playoffs but I wouldn't mind seeing them make a run for it.[/homer]

and the phils play by far the best team in the NL ten times THIS MONTH...doesnt get tougher than that in the league...the phils do not have an easier schedule than the other wild card teams...thats all im saying...

anyone who claims to be a phillie fan and doesnt want them to make the playoffs is a joke...there does seem to be a segment of people out there who fall into that category tho...like "i cant stand this team they suck i hope they lose' blah blah blah....these will also be the first people on the playoff bandwagon if they make it

I just don't think they have enough pitching, IGY.

It's entirely possible that Myers, Lieber, Hamels, Wolf, & Mathieson/Madson could collectively get hot down the stretch and the Phillies could continue smashing the ball to pieces, but I just don't see it happening.

Also - I think the Phillies moving Abreu, Bell & Franklin went a long way toward appeasing those Phillies fans out there who were calling for blood.  I know they didn't get much in return, and the team would have been better if Gillick had actually gotten some front-line talent in return, but still, there's something about them that has looked different lately.

I don't know what it is.  Maybe it's Utley, Rollins & Howard taking over as team leaders but they have looked different lately.

Like I said, I'm hoping for a miracle but I just don't see it happening.

Red Sox get Lopez. Not Leiberthal. Suckers.
Is rjs gonna have to choke a bitch?

Let them eat bootstraps.

PhillyPhreak54

Lopez blows his knee out tonight; Lieberthal is reunited with Francoma tomorrow.

I give them a .1% chance of making it. But I'll be rooting like crazy. The fire-sale (even though Lieber and Burrell and the catcher weren't dealt) has changed the attytood.

Chase dropped his meat cleaver there for a minute to make a great catch in foul ground down the 1B line. Sweet. :yay

El Dookie had 2 balks in one inning.

2-2 game no hit for Chase yet

PhillyPhreak54

And the opposing pitchers continue to hurt them...

El Dookie hits a 2 out 2 strike triple to LF....then Reyes singles him in.

3-2 Muts

Utley will lead off the top of the 9th, having gone 0 for 4 so far.

I'm sure Utley would agree that beating the Mets is a better accomplishment than extending his streak, but after Dellucci just struck out looking with the bases juiced to end the 8th, a hit wouldn't hurt.
