Abreu had a no-trade clause that narrowed the number of potential trade partners from 29 to 4, and of those 4, the Yankees were the only ones seriously interested (unless you consider the minimal interest from Boston).  The package returned would have been a lot better if A) Abreu didn't have a NTC, and B) he wasn't being paid $13M-$15M a year.  Lee and Soriano were a lot cheaper and didn't have NTCs.....

this is probably old news to you baseball nerds, but i just read this for the first time.

about Abreu's lack of power since he won the derby.

QuoteThe Phillies outfielder -- right around the time this story broke, he hit homers in six consecutive games -- was engaged to former Miss Universe Alicia Machado. In May, she appeared on a Mexican reality television show called "La Granga (The Farm)" and, in a video you can find on Limewire, had sex with a fellow cast member on camera. Needless to say, Abreu was not a fan of this, called off the engagement and subsequently went on his homer barrage.

Sold.

Send him up north with his boy Tito Francoma.

I e-mailed Zolecki last night and asked him if they had put anyone on waivers yet and he was pretty non-specific about it and said that all teams do it just to see who goes through. But he did say that Mike said he would probably accept a deal to Boston.

"They don't realize how I play the game.

"Now, everyone here will see the real way I like to play the game. You will see the hustle every day here and you guys will decide if [the bad reputation] is true or not."

This is absolutely hysterical, better yet unreal. So now we are all going to see how My Booby Abreu likes to play the game? After 9 years, you'll show those Yankee fans how to play REAL baseball, as if you were faking it the whole time?

thank god Im allergic to bull$htein

So, will the Phils even get a token player back from Boston in a waiver-trade deal involving Lieberthal?

Ok, so you are the Phillies GM.  Assumming that Rowand finishes the year around these numbers (which may not be a safe assumption) do you pick up the 5 million team option, or take the risk he doesnt pick up the 3 million player option.

Burrell's making HOW MUCH next year, and you're whining about Rowand making $5 mill?
I have said it already the I would 110% support putting Burrell on waivers and letting him go if for nothing if someone claimed him.  Burrell is not worth the money, but I dont believe he is a bad player.

Rowand is a bad player.

PhillyPhreak54

No.

Tomas Perez is a bad player. Alex Gonzalez was a bad player. Adam Bernero was a bad player.

Aaron Rowand is not a bad player. Christ.

Joe Conklin's site - the firesale bit I was talking about the other day is on the right side of the page

I swing the term bad player around much more loosely than you do, apparently.

Rome

Rowand isn't a bad player.

He's an average major league player with average talent who somehow managed to win a World Series as the starting centerfielder last year.

Stop pissing on him like he was a castoff scrub.  It's annoying and completely stupid.

As for the Phillies financial woes, I honest to God didn't know anything about this.  I always knew that their pockets weren't deep like Steinbrenner's but I never knew they were paupers.   What's worse is the fargheads who own the team have no interest in selling either.  There are billionaires everywhere.  Why can't one ride to the rescue and save this team from oblivion?

PhillyPhreak54

Obviously.

Maybe Aaron have a diving catch tonight to show up that fraud Edmonds and to piss mcgraw off. :D

mpmcgraw

I dont root against him, I just have a low tolerance for bad/average players starting when there are younger cheaper players available to play the position.

Geowhizzer

So I take it you were all for Thome being traded, but perhaps upset with getting Rowand.
