Yes.

I was thrilled with getting Gio Gonzalez though.  Very nice trade.

Rowand isn't expensive.

Cheaper doesn't matter in baseball really because there is no cap

And Mr. Bourn and Mr. Victorino are pretty much unproven.

Here is what CBS SportLine listed for Phillies salaries:

Player Salary
Bobby Abreu $13,600,000
Pat Burrell $9,750,000
Randy Wolf $9,125,000
Jon Lieber $7,583,333
Mike Lieberthal $7,500,000
Jimmy Rollins $5,000,000
David Bell $4,700,000
Tom Gordon $4,500,000
Arthur Rhodes $3,700,000
Cory Lidle $3,300,000
Brett Myers $3,300,000
Aaron Rowand $3,250,000
Ryan Franklin $2,600,000
Rheal Cormier $2,500,000
Aaron Fultz $1,200,000
Abraham Nunez $1,125,000
David Dellucci $950,000
Julio Santana $800,000
Alex S. Gonzalez $750,000
Chase Utley $500,000
Sal Fasano $425,000
Ryan Madson $400,000
Ryan Howard $355,000
Chris Booker $350,000
Geoff Geary $350,000
Gavin Floyd $330,000
Shane Victorino $330,000

If Rowand is stealing money, what are Burrell, Lieberthal, Wolf, Leiber, Rollins, Bell, and a host of others doing?

I'd rather take the 3 million and sign draft picks.

It may not seem important to sign mid-round picks, but that is how the Red Sox rebuilt their farm system.  They took many high risk-high reward draft picks, signed as many as possible, and are seeing the benefits of it right now.

I really dont know what is going on with the Abreu money, due to the owners being in money problem rumors, so I am still in favor of cutting salary in the majors to improve the minors.

PhillyPhreak54

I have a better idea...

How about they pay the players AND sign the draft picks. NOt have to take from one to give to the oter cause.

Who will take any of them?

At least one team has asked about Rowand, we can say the same about how many of those other players?  and how many of them have a NTC?

Completely agreed, but I am trying to put myself in Gillick's situation with the current group of owners in charge.

The Phillies are notorious for not putting money in the farm.

My bad I was responding to Geowhizzer, edited for clarity.

I pine for the days of Ruly Carpenter.

I'd like for them to realize that ther are a bunch of Asian and Latin ballplayers out there to be had.

And by the end of the year, some of those contracts come off the books.

I wouldn't be against trading Rowand for decent prospects.   But we were talking about him being paid 3 million.  His salary was smaller than all of the ones I listed, plus several others.

Now Utley?  Howard?  They're downright steals.  :deion

For now.

Gillick's history has shown he is not afraid to go after Asian players.

If he invests the money there it makes the Abreu deal less painful.

Homerun little Bonds.

PhillyPhreak54

Cincy is losing too....

Let's go Chase!!!!!

Man, Weaver sucks balls.

Fair points, I am clearly bias against Rowand, I admit it.
