3 BB and 1 K for Mathieson so far, but he's holding it together.  No hits yet.  :paranoid

I don't understand how you cannot see that Pat Burrell has got major problems, mp.

I used to be a fan of his.

He is a soaking wet vadge. He strikes out looking too much and he has no emotion whatsoever. He walked out of the clubhouse last year on the final day of the season instead of watching the Cubbies-Stros game.
I think his strengths outweigh his weaknesses, contract aside.

When he was younger he used to slam his bat against the ground when he would strike out, if he still did that you would like him?

I need a whole lot more than percieved emotion to not like him as a player.

Although I like it when guys show some fire, I am not one of those simpletons who require that in a player in order to like him.

I don't like his defeatist attitude when he takes called third after called third. He gets angry once in awhile but he still has that dead fish look going on. I remember when he hit a GW HR vs. ATL and he pointed at the dugout towards Bowa and pumped his fist. I liked that too.

But that was before Tyler Houston got a hold of him and told him Bowa was a big meanie.

He just gives off that "I don't give a farg" attitude, IMO.

Excessive K's + not living up to what he could be + not caring = why I am no longer a fan/.

I try not to blame players for not reaching expectations set by GMs/fans.

I can understand why people dont like him and I respect that, but when someone says he stinks it just is flat out not true.

Burrell up with the bases loaded and 2 outs...

takes a FB for strike one

lines out to LF.

mpmcgraw

He is hitting the ball hard tonight.

Too bad Rolen is playing third.  :-D

Geowhizzer

Here's mine, by the way:

1.  Alfonso Soriano
2.  Jason Bay (more like 1a)
3.  Matt Holliday
4.  Adam Dunn
5.  Pat Burrell
6.  Kevin Mench
7.  Dave Roberts
8.  Barry Bonds
9.  Luis Gonzalez
10.  Josh Willingham
11.  Ryan Langerhaus
12.  Matt Murton
13.  Chris Duncan
14.  Cliff Floyd
15.  Preston Wilson
16.  Jose Cruz

And, of course, Carlos Lee would have slotted into #3 if he were still in the leauge.

mpmcgraw

Carlos Lee isnt really having a better season than Burrell and Burrell has arguably had a better career at the plate.  He certianly isnt having a better year than Holliday and Dunn.

*ducks and covers*

Howard's OPS in August is 2.417.

Ha!

I win.

Geowhizzer

Here's the stats:

Carlos Lee (2006):  .282 AVG, .352 OBP, .550 SLG, .902 OPS, 28 HR, 82 RBI, 12 SB, 63 Runs
Carlos Lee (Car.): .285 AVG, .339 OBP, .494 SLG, .832 OPS, 212 HR, 748 RBI, 89 SB, 681 Runs (8 years, 30 years old last June)
Yearly Average:  .285 ABG, .339 OBP, .494 SLG, .832 OPS, 26.5 HR, 93.5 RBI, 11.1 SB, 85.1 Runs

Pat Burrell (2006):  .259 AVG, .380 OBP, .518 SLG, .898 OPS, 22 HR, 68 RBI, 0 SB, 50 Runs
Pat Burrell (Car.):  .258 AVG, .360 OBP, .480 SLG, .840 OPS, 181 HR, 617 RBI, 5 SB, 474 Runs (7 years, 30 in October)
Yearly Average:  .258 AVG, .360 OPS, .480 SLG, .840 OPS, 25.8 HR, 88.1 RBI, .7 SB, 67.7 Runs

Statistical Observations:

- Burrell leads in OBP (+.021) and OPS (+.008)
- Lee leads in everything else.
- In runs produced (Runs + RBI - HR):  Lee 1429 (178.6 / year); Burrell 1091 (155.9 / year)

I think that a good statistical argument could be made that Lee had been the more productive hitter, and by a fair amount.

By the way, Burrell has struck out as many times this year as Carlos Lee did last year (87).  Of course, Lee had 608 AB to Burrell's 305.  This year, Lee has 39.

Holliday is a good young OFer.  I'm just not sure how much of his stats are inflated by Coors Field.  He also doesn't have the power/production of Lee, even playing in Coors.  Give it a year or two.

mpmcgraw

The argument could be made either way as a hitter, but yea Lee is the better all around player, if nothing else because he can actually run.

I just dont like Carlos Lee for some reason.

PhillyPhreak54

Lee is another assface. He was sat down by Guillen in Chicago for not hustling. After the time off he thanked Guillen for the time off to rest up. He still didn't get that he was sat for not hustling. This was told by John Kruk on WIP a few mnths ago.

Look at the Phils fan in RF standing up and booing him. Farged up but funny. :-D

Should've worn the gray road glove, Bobby. The red doesn't jive.

im truly amazed anyone can vouch for Pat Burrell. if you truly are a student of baseball--no way in hell you can be happy with his performance. you only get so many chances to get out of a slump, and show you can play at a somewhat consistent level....now its at the point of embarrassing. not good enough...move on

I pray Gillick dumps him like Abreu and starts a clean slate
