Beermonkey, in answer to your original query, I have a few things I consider worthy of desert island status. But some of it would probably make your head explode, or at least give you whiplash. Consider I have Bread and NOFX just a few clicks away from each other.   :paranoid

What direction are you looking to go? Rock? Folk? <gulp> Hiphop?

Thanks Sus. I'm leaning towards Rock & Metal but an open for Jazz, Blues, Punk. Pretty much anything. I'm curious about the cajun, ass-wiggling music & will be donning my eye patch later to seek some out.

try some Tom Waits.

he's had 3 different waves in his career.

if you want the smoother, jazzy acoustic stuff start off with the album Closing Time.

if you want some of the more storytelling, offbeat, beat-poet stuff...go with Rain Dogs

if you want his more recent...really experimental stuff, go with Mule Variations

Sheesh.  What's with Toby?

He reminds me of a guy who slept with a girl I liked. They both have that arrogant, puffy-lipped smirk.

Rome

I farging hate Toby Keith's guts.  He's an embarrassment much like the assclown he often pimps for in Washington.

That's my favorite Waits phase. The Heart of Saturday Night is excellent, too.

BMonk...do you like Celtic flavored stuff? Ever listen to bands like Black 47 or Flogging Molly?

of that phase Heart of Saturday night is the best for my money...but Closing Time has a couple of classics on it, he's never been a mass market attraction....the irony being that some of his most famous songs were made famous by other people (Ol'55 - The Eagles...Downtown Train - Rod Stewart....Jersey Girl - Bruce Sprintsteen...ect...).

Small Change has Pasties and G String...which simply cannot be missed...for me there's too much to recommend just one.

Soon as my frigging family goes to bed, I'll find out.

If you want to listen to something instrumental and tough to categorize, check out the last couple of releases from Jerry Douglas (the God of dobro). He's really put an electric edge on what is a very traditional bluegrass instrument.

Father Demon

The Urge -- Open All Night; Straight to Hell; It's Gettin' Hectic; Bark Like a Dog; Damn That Sh!t is Good; Drunk A$$hole

All great songs....

I could listen to Receiving The Gift of Flavor and Master of Styles CDs for days in a row.
The drawback to marital longevity is your wife always knows when you're really interested in her and when you're just trying to bury it.
