QuoteHurt fan is hospitalized and angry with Phillies
By Michael Currie Schaffer and Julie Shaw
Inquirer Staff Writers

    * Shooed by the Sox, Phils lose 12th out of last 15
    * Hurt fan is hospitalized and angry with Phillies
    * Jim Salisbury | Sour note: Myers says all the wrong things.
    * On Baseball | Three-way tie for first?
    * Incites | Interleague play sells tickets, and that's all that matters
    * Box score: Red Sox 5, Phillies 3 (10)

The injury happened not far from home plate in the ninth inning of a game last Sunday, a collision of ball and bone that sent blood squirting and put its victim in the hospital.

But the injured party wasn't a burly catcher or a beaned batter. Rather, it was a fan, Sherry McGoldrick, 42, of Dover, Del., whose face wound up in the middle of a foul ball's descent back to earth. "I didn't see it until it was an inch from my face," she said.

On Friday, McGoldrick was still at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. She said the ball broke her nose, her sinus bone, her left eye-socket bone. She has blood clots in her left eye.

McGoldrick said she was angry that she had yet to hear from the Phillies about the accident at Citizens Bank Park. "I think it's terrible how they're treating the fans," she said. "I'm appalled."

The Phillies see it differently. Team spokesman Larry Shenk said he was unaware of McGoldrick's situation, but noted that an announcement before every game warns fans to beware of batted balls, and that the team's tickets come with a warning on the back:

"Holder assumes all risk incident to attending a baseball game, whether occurring before, during, or after the game (including without limitation from thrown or batted balls, thrown bats or fragments thereof and spectators' conduct) and releases The Phillies, the opposing club and their respective players from liability therefor."

Shenk said the team received several calls from McGoldrick's family, focusing on whether it would pay medical expenses. As a rule, he said, they do not.

what a dumb twat.  pay attention at the games and this shtein won't happen to you.

Yup.
They make an announcement before the game and its written on the back of your ticket. Plus, how are they suppose to know the status of every foul ball hit and every fan in the stadium?

Today's game is rained out, rescheduled for tomorrow afternoon

People like that anger me. In fact, I'm glad she got hit in the face. I hope it happens again.

These people who go the game to just be seen there or to socialize and not pay attention deserve what they get. That includes an ejection on the first pitch hit down the line that is in play until the know-nothing icehole leans over the fence to try to grab the ball.

Pay attention, dipshteins.

Know what would make me feel even better?

If this chick was on a cell phone and trying to wave at little Johnny at home when the ball crushed her face.

They want the Phillies to pay for medical expenses?

Farging idiots.

reese125

i could seriously see MLB having fans sign waivers when they get into the ballparks in the near future

BigEd76

It's already on the ticket.  You agree to the rules when you use the ticket and walk through the gates...

reese125

ok, so I didnt read it...wheres my signature?

Its all about the almighty John Hancock in a court of law

Typical Phils game.  Wasted scoring chances, then the pitcher gets tired and gives up the lead, then the bullpen throws gas on the fire.  6-0 Sox
