Phils demote Gavin Floyd after another disappointing startBy Todd Zolecki

INQUIRER STAFF WRITER

LOS ANGELES -- The Phillies this morning optioned righthander Gavin Floyd to triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Manager Charlie Manuel indicated the team might make a decision about Floyd after he lasted just four innings in last night's 7-2 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium. Floyd allowed seven hits, seven runs, four walks, and three home runs.

He is 4-3 with a 7.29 ERA this season, the highest ERA in the National League and second only to Minnesota Twins righthander Carlos Silva, who has a 7.81 ERA.

Floyd has an 11.09 ERA in his last four starts. He hasn't lasted six innings in his last five starts. He has just three quality starts out of 11.

Before Jon Lieber went on the disabled list Monday, it appeared Floyd might have needed last night's start to keep his job anyway. The Phillies had lefthander Cole Hamels make his rehab start last night in single-A Lakewood, and that wasn't a coincidence.

The Phillies have officially recalled lefthander Eude Brito to take Floyd's place. Brito is scheduled to pitch tomorrow afternoon in place of Lieber.

Hamels will take Floyd's spot in the rotation Tuesday in Arizona.

1. ill make fun of whatever fan base i want, especially hosers out in LA who arrive in the 3rd and leave in the 7th. and also boo when their team wins the game, as bad as philly fans can get, i dont think weve ever reached that low.

2. tough roster move coming up when hamels gets activated. right now the pen looks like this: gordon, rhodes, cormier, fultz, sanches, geary, franklin, condrey. the first 4 are safe. condrey has been terrific since hes been here. sanchez was great in scranton, and pitched well yesterday. geary has been a 7th man, good sometimes, really bad at others. franklin, as we know, sucks ass. but, he has no option and would have to be released. my guess is geary gets sent down, considering franklin has to get paid and has no option. one good thing is that manuel appears to not trust franklin anymore, and he cant really farg things up anymore. he can be a long man out the pen, but without floyd and his glorious 4 inning stints, how often will that be needed?
Zero hour, Michael. It's the end of the line. I'm the firstborn. I'm sick of playing second fiddle. I'm always third in line for everything. I'm tired of finishing fourth. Being the fifth wheel. There are six things I'm mad about, and I'm taking over.

1. You are Canadian for saying 'Hosers'. If you are Canadian, you are automatically French. You sir, are a cowardly Hoyda for being french.

2. Bitching about 3rd inning and leaving in the 7th? Originality points-0

3. Bitching about Dodgers fans booing? There should be an appreciation there.

4. MDS, you are now the board's new "NB".
I said watch the game and you will see my spirit manifest.-ILLEAGLE 02/04/05

Yeah, they play at RFK. They just made an agreement on the new park, should be done in '09 I think.....

Rollins and Burrell should be added in there.

It sucks that Floyd couldn't hack it. We can only hope that he'll go to SWB and get his head on right and get his mechanics straightened out. Probability? Slim.

MDS,

Geary is out of options now too, I believe. They burned his last one when he was sent down for 27 minutes a couple of weeks ago.

I'd cut Franklin's ass.

Rollins is average.  Burrell has been a disappointment compared to where he was drafted.

PhillyPhreak54

Rollins is better than average. He's great defensively and he's above average at the plate. If he was a 6th-8th hitter constantly he'd be viewed in a better light by most, IMO. But because he's miscast as a leadoff guy he is looked at by some as a disappointment.

Burrell is what he is. He's a good power hitter and an average OF with a good arm.

Speaking of Burrell...he's been unclutch this year. His RISP numbers are atrocious

rjs246

Is rjs gonna have to choke a bitch?

Let them eat bootstraps.

PhillyPhreak54

No, but he is a career .273 hitter. That, my friend, is average. Where he goes into the above average stage is that he gives you 35+ doubles, 10+ triples and 10+ HR's. LIke I said...if he wasn't miscast as a leadoff hitter and was in the 6th-8th hole he'd be viewed better.

MDS

Geary is out of options? Hmmm. Whatever, Franklin should be it.

BTW, Lieber is out until mid-july. Not 3 weeks. More Eude Brito fun.
