QuoteEagles | Barber says he will be healthy
Wed, 8 Mar 2006 16:00:57 -0800

Rob Maadi, of the Associated Press, reports newly signed Philadelphia Eagles LB Shawn Barber (knee) said he's healthy now and will be ready to practice "full bore" at the first minicamp after the NFL Draft. He is coming off two injury-plagued seasons in which he played a total of 11 games for the Kansas City Chiefs. He tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in November 2004 and played in three games last year.

Whew!  Now I feel better.

I don't know about Arrington.  If he's willing to take a one-year deal, the Eagles might consider him.

He's better than Barber, Jones, Adams, or any other linebacker other than five-fo on the squad, so unless they're planning on drafting Sims from FSU, I can't see why they wouldn't be interested in him.

I know Spads says otherwise, but still...

Do you know Flipper on KFFL?  Eagles fan (maybe former?) who now works for the taterskins - he said Arrington and Trotter don't get along - the implication was that there may have been some serious incidents between the two of them.  Not sure if that will play a role in the Eagles thinking, or if it should play a role, but I thought it was worth passing along.

Buck and McDougle have never made such bosts. I believe him.

The man. The myth. The legend.

Barber could work out well for the team this year. He's got something to prove and that is always good. He's not a long term solution by any stretch of the imagination but who is at linebacker on this team?

Yeah, they probably never boasted like that either.

lets just hope someone doesnt shoot him
Zero hour, Michael. It's the end of the line. I'm the firstborn. I'm sick of playing second fiddle. I'm always third in line for everything. I'm tired of finishing fourth. Being the fifth wheel. There are six things I'm mad about, and I'm taking over.

QuoteEagles sign LB Barber to one-year contract

March 8, 2006

PHILADELPHIA (Ticker) - Shawn Barber is back with the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Eagles addressed their weak linebacking corps on Wednesday by signing Barber to a one-year contract.

Financial terms were not disclosed.

Barber, 31, spent a productive 2002 season with the Eagles, collecting 119 tackles and two interceptions while starting all 16 games at weakside linebacker. He left following that season to sign a seven-year, $30 million deal with Kansas City.

"I am at a point in my career that I was not interested in going to a new situation," Barber said. "I went to Kansas City and had a chance to join (Chiefs coach Dick) Vermeil out there. I had pretty much told myself that that was where I was going to retire. I was going to retire a Chief and play out my years there and when I couldn't play anymore for them, I was going to retire. I didn't want to learn a new defense and go through the transition period of being reacquainted with a whole new locker room and a whole new staff.

"But given the opportunity and given the great chance of coming back here to Philadelphia and being reunited with a lot of teammates and (Eagles coach) Andy Reid and (defensive coordinator) Jim Johnson, I could not pass it up."

Barber registered a career-high 141 tackles in his first season in Kansas City but was limited to just 11 games the last two campaigns before being released in a salary-cap move earlier this offseason.

In 92 career games with Washington, Philadelphia and Kansas City, Barber has registered 583 tackles, 20 interceptions and 10 sacks.

Last season, the Eagles had a Pro Bowler at middle linebacker in Jeremiah Trotter. However, Dhani Jones and Keith Adams made few big plays at the other two linebacker spots.

The Eagles on Thursday also re-signed defensive end Juqua Thomas to a one-year contract. Thomas registered 19 tackles while playing in all 16 games last season.

Piker had an interesting thought on the ***.

How about the Eagles STILL go after Hutchinson and get David Givens as well?

Spadaro mentioned that the Eagles will be signing two high-priced free agents and everyone has assumed that one will be on defense and one on offense.  What if both are offensive linemen?  Can you imagine that line?

Jesus...

Thomas, Hutchinson, Bentley, Andrews, Herremans.

That would instantly be the best offensive line in the NFL.

Anyway, I doubt it but it is an interesting thought.

Better still:

Thomas/Herremans, Hutchinson, Bentley, Andrews, Runyan.

Then givens as WR with Brown and Pinkston. TE LJ Smith. RB: Westbrook and White (drafted) or Jamal Lewis (maybe) and Mahe.  An offense like this could be murder.

Also, this could give us the options spending the draft on defense.

It depends a bit on how the FA's come in. If they are willing to accept less money for a chnace to play hear (akin to the "Trotter" and "Runyan" discount) this would only open up additional possibilities.

I am not sure, and probably incredibly naive, but who knows, the fact that Barber, Trotter have come back, and Runyan publically stated that he would take a 20% discount might have incited some of the FA's to take a similar approach. Good program, until last year a winning program in exchange for a little less money.

Runyan's as good as gone, Dutch.

Herremans is in at LT.  It's all but a done deal according to "sources."
