Wow...apparently there are people who think that a QB who had sub-standard arm strength BEFORE sustaining TWO rotator cuff injuries to his throwing shoulder is going to somehow recover well enough to play NFL football.

Pennington is done.  Done, I say.

Arm strength or no... Pennington has a rep of throwing TD's to his teammates instead of the opposing defense.  That alone makes him a serious upgrade.

The Chargers are getting raped in that deal. At no point of his career was Abraham worth the #4 overall pick in the draft. So what if Rivers has never played, he still has a higher value than that.

SunMo

don't underestimate the value of getting Rivers off the cap

That logic makes zero sense.  There are plenty of recent top-5 picks in the draft that suck completely and/or are out of the NFL.  The fact that Rivers hasn't played makes him an unknown commodity, not a bona fide stud.

well, they are giving up a guy who (barring injury) wont even see the field this year for a proven starting DE.   Not that bad IMO.

Point taken, and I take back what I said earlier after seeing that Abraham is only 27 years old. For some reason I thought he was into his 30's

Also keep in mind that Abraham doesn't want to be there, and that the Jets don't want to pay him long term.

Trade does makes some sense but does anyone know how well Brees is recovering from his sholder injury.  Are San Diego not taking a bit of a chance?

AJ Feeley to the rescue for them, baby. ;)

Here are the pertinent kffl blurbs on the subject:

Chargers | Brees' rehab going well
Thu, 26 Jan 2006 23:16:45 -0800
Casey Pearce, of Chargers.com, reports San Diego Chargers QB Drew Brees (shoulder) said his rehabilitation process is going very well, despite reports to the contrary. "I'm feeling pretty good," Brees said. "I'm three weeks post-op. Right now, I'm at the point where people usually are after six weeks. I'm about three weeks ahead of schedule." Approximately one week ago, Brees shed his sling and began using his right arm for routine tasks. Prior to the operation, Brees said that he hoped to be throwing a football by May. He's still hopeful that he'll meet that date.

Chargers | Brees surgery goes well - from www.KFFL.com
Thu, 5 Jan 2006 19:17:33 -0800
San Diego Chargers QB Drew Brees (shoulder) underwent successful arthroscopic surgery Thursday afternoon Jan. 5, in Birmingham, Alabama to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder. The surgery was done by Dr. James Andrews. Brees will return to San Diego next week and immediately begin an aggressive rehabilitation program on the road to a full recovery. He is expected to begin throwing in four months and be ready to participate in training camp. "Though his recovery period is longer than we had hoped for, we couldn't be happier that Drew is expected to make a full recovery," said general manager A.J. Smith.

So it's going well?

I think they were going to trade one or the other, but w/ Brees injury, only Rivers would garner anything.
Anyone but Reid.
