It's crunch time in labor negotiations

Meetings have begun between representatives of the Players Association and the Management Council and will continue next week with the hope that the framework for an extension of the collective bargaining agreement will be in place by late February.

Technically, an extension would have to be in place by the start of the new league year on March 3 or problems would arise; agents would be faced with making deals for this year's free agents with only a four-year amortization period for bonuses, and some franchises would be forced to all but gut their teams because of salary cap problems, according to league sources on both sides of the issue.

''A number of teams would go into severe cap trouble if there's no extension," said a league source. ''A team like the Colts would have to blow their team up. And for agents, it will be hard to get a true market deal. Not hard. It would be impossible.

''The good news is, the way the system was designed the last year without an extension is very painful for both sides. Hopefully that will promote rational behavior on both sides. As we get closer to D-Day, people start to think more clearly on both sides."

Management has begun to put together some guaranteed cap numbers beginning at $110 million and swelling to $160 million six years later. Twelve years ago, when the salary cap era began, the first cap was around $36 million

That means we get to save even more money! Yay! :D

So this begs the question.  Does Lurie spend as much as he can to get a Ring?  Does he become Ed Snider?

They would be close to $50M UNDER the cap if this happens. Right now, they're estimated to be 19M under because of payments that have to be made to some players under the 30% rule if there is no extension to the CBA--those payments come up to about 12M. So, if there's an extension and that 12M gets added back in, plus 18M added to the cap (because it was estimated at 92M), that would put them $49M under--and the only players who would be due extensions (and who would deserve them) would be Michael Lewis and LJ.

You're using the term a bit loosely. I know they had a bad year...but let me know when LJ gets some sticky-skin on his arms to keep him from giving me a massive heart attack each time he carries the ball.

Michael Lewis...we'll see next season how he does...but I like to believe a good player is a good player in a bad or good situation.

If the cap went that high, every player would be agitating for a new deal.

And will have a staggering 40 catches for 200 yards with Brunell throwing him the ball.

The man. The myth. The legend.

This would be a farging coup for the eagles. Make fun of their cap space all you want, but if the cap is that high and the eagles have more room than everyone else this offseason could be really farging exciting.
Is rjs gonna have to choke a bitch?

not really

the eagles are in the middle of the pack as far as salary cap goes...so i wouldnt say this hurts or helps them...it hurts the teams that have the most room...if it really does go that high then to me its almost going to be as if no one has a cap

If the cap really is going to be that high next year then the Eagles need to send TO the following letter:

Dear TO:

We know that it's been a rocky road over the last year with the way things played out.  You publicly stated that you wanted more money and our knee jerk reaction to your public comments were to deny you the opportunity to renegotiate.  You then went on to publicly criticize the organization, the coaches and your quarterback.  We in turn, suspended you and then deactivated your for the remainder of the season.

We realize the tremendous error we have made though.  We would like to formally apologize to you and your starving family for all of the trouble we may have caused you.  There is however, a glimmer of hope that we can repair our torn relationship and move forward together to bring a championship back to Philadelphia.  It has been brought to our attention that the NFL is going to increase the salary cap to $110 million for the 2006 NFL season.  After much deliberation between the front office, coaching staff and select members of the team we feel that it would only be appropriate to use this new found wealth to secure your place in Philadelphia for years to come.  Or at least until 2007 when you want a new contract.

Joe Banner and his fiscal team have been crunching numbers for days on end now and we feel that we can make you an offer that will not only meet, but exceed any contract demands you had.  In fact, we've decided to use all of the remaining cap space on you.  We now recognize that you are a vital asset to this team and an integral component in our championship quest.  We hope that you and your agent, Mr. Rosenhaus will be able to put the occurrences of the passed year behind you, just as we have put it behind us so that we may all move forward together.

                                                                     Sincerely,

Jeff, Joe, Tom, Andy and Donovan

PS.   SIKE!!!!  We're actually giving all the money to Donovan.  Hahahahahahahaha!

PPS.  Hey TO!!  Where ya at?  I know where you're at.  The unemployment line biatch!
