Mets Off-Season Thread

I figured all the Mets movements deserved it's own page.

The 3 latest Mets rumors:

1. Omar is in talks now with Barry Zito's agent regarding an extension, which would lead me to believe that a deal has been made in principle, and will only be finalized if the Mets and Zito can work out a long term deal. The newest Athletics are rumored to be Lastings Milledge and Aaron Heilman. A steep price to pay, but as long as a long dela can be hammered out, I think it's a no brainer for the Mets.

2. Kris and Anna to KC for Jeremy Affeldt and Mike MacDougal. Another good move by Omar solidifying the middle relief situation that despreratly needed attention. It's a shame they can't lock up Roberto Hernandez, but Affeldt has a real good fastball, and MacDougal is a former closer, who will be able to pick up the 8th from Zito, Pedro, etc...

3. Mark Grudzielanek to be signed on Thursday. I believe he is the best possible option for the Mets here. He's an excellent defensive 2B, and a good guy at either the top or bottom of the order. Aquiring Soriano here would have been overkill.

If these 3 moves get done, I think Omar should pack it in, take a vacation and shut off his phone until April. He's built one hell of a team.

But they didn't get Manny.  It's all a failure.  :)

DH

I am in the minority of Mets fans who do not want Manny. Maybe I'm spurned from the "you know who" fiasco, but we don't need any Grade A A-holes on this team. Plus, the guy is getting old, and who's to say that his decline won't start this year? Add into the equation that you never know how a guy will react to playing in NY, and I come to my conclusion that Manny is not a fit for the Mets.

When you trade the prize of the farm system, you should not get back a 34 year old whiner. JMHO.

Why not?  You guys already got 2 of them in the past month....  :P

The Mets are the taterskins so we might as well create a "2006 Point and Laugh at the Mets" thread

I can deal with not standing for God Bless America, but there's no way a guy on my team is gonna take a piss behind the left field wall.  ;D

I never ever ever thought I'd hear the words "It's a shame they can't lock up Roberto Hernandez". :-D

McDougal and Affeldt could be nice. However McDougal has control issues and Affeldt has big time health issues. Could be a great move but also could be one that easily blows up in the latin version of Daniel $nyder's grill.

Zito to NY could be good since he'll be reunited with Rick Peterson. But is he an east coast mentality guy? I don't think so. Thats one reason why I wasn't keen on him coming to Philly.

Whats going to happen with Matsui? Will Minay be villified for having signed him to so much money and how he's pretty much a bench player?

DH

Matsui has go to go. No question about it. The guy was waste of $25 mil from the start. Hopefully, Minaya signs Grudzielanik and then brings up Anderson Hernandez to back him up, and someone; anyone can take Matsui off our hands. Rumor was he was going to go to Boston if a Manny deal went down, but they got Loretta for 2B yesterday so...

The newest Kris and Anna rumor has them going to Texas for Laynce Nix and Jose Dominguez, but this trade makes little to no sense. The last thing the Mets need is another OF, and MacDougal and Affeldt are both better than Dominguez.

Jose Valentin was signed last night to a 1 year deal. I was always a fan of signing old guys to 1 year deals to see what they have left. Roberto Hernandez panned out pretty well... ::)

DH

Mets signed the ageless wonder Julio Franco to a 2 year deal this morning. 2 years? Eh, whatever - he'll be 49 when the contract expires. They also signed Jose Valentin to a minor league deal.

Word is that Bernie Williams might be next, and Omar and Royals brass are meeting now trying to hammer out the Benson for Affeldt and MacDougal deal. Hopefully Matsui is thrown in. And we pray... :evil

Amen.
Affeldt and MacDougal would be a sweet additon to this team, but I dont see them taking on too much of matsui;s contract.

P.S = Minaya didnt sign Matsui, that was before him

Will Julio be residing in one of the many area nursing homes?
