Dirk Johnson aggravated a strained groin in Sunday's 49-21 loss to the Denver Broncos, an injury that could shelve the Eagles punter for the rest of the season.

"It looks like it's pretty significant," coach Andy Reid said at his news conference yesterday at the NovaCare Complex. "We'll see how he does after he sees the doctor."

Johnson had an MRI yesterday and will be examined today by William Meyers, chairman of surgery at Drexel University. In July, he had surgery for a sports hernia and missed all of training camp and the preseason, but he returned in time for the season opener.

Veteran Sean Landeta filled in for Johnson in the final two preseason games, but he doesn't appear to be a likely candidate to replace Johnson. Reid would not expound on the Eagles' options if Johnson's injury proves season-ending.

"I'm going to hold judgment there until Dr. Meyers sees him," Reid said. "We'll let him be the judge there."

Through seven games, Johnson averaged 41.4 yards on 39 punts. Landeta, who played for the Eagles from 1999 to 2002, has a career average of 43.3 yards but hasn't played in an NFL game since Week 11 of last season with the St. Louis Rams.
