OK, so I hate being that guy who looks back in (relative) hindsight, and says "wah wah wah we should have picked *insert random flash in the pan's name* instead of *insert underperforming/inactive Eagles rookie*." But the fact is that this kid represents EXACTLY what the Eagles are missing in their offense. I like the Lamar Gordon pickup and I hope that he can be the short yardage hammer that the offense needs, but Jacobs is a farging truck and was available into the fourth round.

Anyway, I think that he and Tiki have the potential to have a huge year together and he makes the Giants offense scarier than it has been in a while.

A lot of people thought the Eagles would have interest, and maybe they did... but not at a 3rd round level.

They think the upside of a gamebreaker-type back like Moats is better than just getting a big body.

Jacobs backed up Brown and Williams at Auburn before transferring to SIUC.

There are a lot of schmucks who are simply 'big bodies' but Jacobs does not appear to fall into that category. The kid was a really good college back (he was at Auburn for a while unless I'm mistaken and only left because he would have been sharing carries/backing up Williams and Brown). Anyway, we have a gamebreaker in Westrbook. What we needed was a bulldozer and the wherewithall to extend Westbrook. Sadly have had neither so now we are faced with the very real possibility that Westbrook will leave, and another undersized back to step in for him.

Like I said, hopefully Gordon does the trick, and if he does then hopefully we can keep Westbrook (or Moats will fill in for him effectively). But the fact that until a few days before opening kickoff there wasn't a single back on the roster who could bang it up the middle shows how little our coaching staff recognizes their own team's biggest weakness.

The reason they couldn't draft a complimentary back to Westbrook was because they weren't sure they'd have Westbrook beyond 2005, and they believe replacing him would be much harder than finding a decent "big" back.

I think Gordon can be very good.  We'll see.

I hope you're right. I'm just saying that:

Extending Westbrook + drafting Jacobs = boner

while

Not extending Westbrook + drafting Moats + Moats being inactive for game 1 + Reno Mahe + Lamar Gordon = no current chub with only a slight chance of future wood

I just don't think Eagles like big backs. I don't necessarily agree with that, but if the Eagles get one it's going to be someone off the waiver wire.
