QuoteWR McCANTS SIGNS ONE-YEAR DEAL

September 3, 2005
By CHRIS McPHERSON

The Eagles added depth at the wide receiver position Saturday by signing former Washington taterskin Darnerien McCants to a one-year contract.
"McCants has good size and speed and has made a lot of plays with the taterskins, in particular against us," said head coach Andy Reid. "We'll see what kind of role he fills once we get him acclimated to our offense."

McCants will meet the media later this evening.

Entering this season, McCants was battling to be the taterskins' big receiver. But it was 6-3, 214-pound McCants' inability to contribute on special teams helped lead to his dismissal in Washington, according to published reports.

His size and potential caught the attention of Reid who worked him out on Wednesday. Following the Eagles' preseason finale against the Jets on Thursday night, Reid said that "he did a nice job in the work out. We'll see how things go here. We are keeping our eyes open with all these guys, but he did have a good workout."

McCants has been sort of an enigma in his first four seasons in the NFL. The former Delaware State star had a breakout season in 2003 catching 27 passes for 360 yards and six touchdowns. However, McCants regressed in 2004 and only had five catches for 71 yards, while being inactive for 10 games.

Against the Eagles in his career, McCants had 11 receptions for 149 yards and a touchdown.

McCants will need to learn the Eagles' offense, but could instantly develop into a key special teams guy with the help of one of the top coaches in the league in coordinator John Harbaugh.

McCants, a 5th round draft choice of Washington in 2001, appeared in 29 games for the taterskins, including three starts. After being inactive for all 16 games of his rookie year, he went on to record 53 receptions for 687 yards and eight touchdowns over the next three seasons.

A Gambrills, Md., native, McCants starred collegiately at Delaware State, where as a tight end caught 36 passes for 692 yards and 18 touchdowns during his senior season. His touchdown total led all of Division I-AA that year and set new school and conference records.

I like that McCants is very capable in the red zone.  In limited NFL action, he's found the end zone 8 times... and this little blurb from his intro article on PE.com just cements that.

36 receptions.  1/2 of them were TD's.

I'll bet Reid has him working in the goalline packages by week 3.

QuoteMcCants officially an Eagle

By REUBEN FRANK

Darnerian McCants couldn't believe his ears.

A package?

For him?

McCants, buried deep on the bench in Washington, formally joined the Eagles Saturday, three days after he unofficially agreed to terms of a one-year contract to serve as the Eagles' fourth receiver.

"The greatest thing coach (Andy) Reid said to me was that with my abilities, they will build a package around me," McCants said. "So even if it's only three or four plays a game, I know that's three or four opportunities I'm going to have.

"I can't beat that one. That's telling me he's going to get me on the field."

Where he rarely got to last year.

McCants, a 28-year-old wide receiver out of Delaware State, found himself inactive on opening day a year ago when the taterskins faced the Buccaneers at FedEx Field.

"That's when I knew I wasn't in their plans," he said. "I only played four games and it wasn't very productive."

McCants played in only five games for a taterskins team that went 6-10. He caught just five passes for 71 yards and was released on Monday.

"The worst year of my life," he said. "You tell a person to work hard and he does what he's told and there's no results, that's tough. Getting released was a blessing in disguise. I was really happy."  (PG note: Seems to be a trend with players who go to the Skins)

In 2002 and 2003, he caught 48 passes for 616 yards, including a career-best 4-for-79 performance against the Eagles two years ago.

"I was given an opportunity to play in those games," he said. "Maybe the other receivers were doubled or (quarterback Pat) Ramsey happened to hit me at the right time."

The Eagles like McCants as veteran depth behind starters Terrell Owens and Greg Lewis and impressive rookie Reggie Brown. McCants, who stands 6-foot-3, 215 pounds, moves ahead of 2003 third-round pick Billy McMullen, who survived yesterday's roster cuts but does not appear to be in the team's plans.

"I've never had a Hall of Fame quarterback or a winning program or a wide receiver (like Owens) who's my size," he said. "That's somebody I can definitely learn from.

"This is a great place to be. I have a chance to win here and that's something I have not done in football."
"Oh, yeah. They'll still boo. They have to. They're born to boo. Just now, they'll only boo with two Os instead of like four." - Larry Andersen

Funny the burgandy and gold Kool-Aid drinkers would have you believe it was Turner, Schottenheimer, Spurrier's fault. Now they have Gibbs back and it's a whole new line of unreasonable reasoning.

For those with Comcast SportsNet, check out the segment with McCants on SportsNite/SportsRise.  With the glasses, he reminds me of Pootie Tang.  :-D

"Sa da tay!"

During the segment, he goes to Geno's and says "I know all about that 'Wiz Wit' stuff, but I want a cheesesteak with provolone, fried onions, lettuce, tomato, mayonnaise and black pepper.  This is my first one."

Cook: "This is your first?"
DM: "Yeah."
Cook: "Then you don't want a cheesesteak hoagie.  You want a real cheesesteak."  :-D

While waiting for his cheesesteak:
DM: "I'm new in town."
Cook: "How come?"
DM: "I just signed with the Eagles."
Cook: "What position?"
DM: "Wide receiver."
Cook: "Oh...we've been waiting for you!"  :-D
