Shelby Foote

I read Shelby Foote's three-volume narrative history of the Civil War over twenty years ago - lots of reading, but really worthwhile. Those of you who saw the Ken Burns documentary series on the Civil War will recognize him, and it was nice to see such an impressive scholar gain a degree of notoriety as a result.

Loved his writing.  Him, James McPherson and Bruce Catton (who passed away in 1978) are my favorite Civil War historians.

Former All-Star catcher Dick Dietz dead at 67 from a heart attack.

Dietz probably was better known, however, for what happened at Dodger Stadium on May 31, 1968.

Drysdale was in the midst of setting a major league record of 58 2/3 scoreless innings and bidding for his fifth straight shutout when the Giants loaded the bases with no outs in the ninth inning.

Dietz came up, and was hit in the elbow by a 2-2 pitch from the future Los Angeles Hall of Famer. But before Dietz could take his base and force home a run that would break Drysdale's streak, plate umpire Harry Wendelstedt ruled that Dietz did not try to get out of the way of the ball.

Former U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson Dies

Gaylord Nelson, a former governor and U.S. senator from Wisconsin and the founder of Earth Day, died Sunday. He was 89. Nelson died at his home in Kensington, Md., of cardiovascular failure, said Bill Christofferson, Nelson's biographer and a family spokesman.
