I'm visiting family in California.

This place is bonkers.  I can't wait to return.

Baltimore has ruined me for "nice" places.  It's all so phony here, drowned in money and poor taste.

First for a couple days around Berkeley
Then a train ride
Now Santa Barbara

Santa Barbara's really nice. Yes on the phony part but some great hiking and mountain biking trails

Hot Nurse Wife was raised here (in the servant class, not the money) so she's happy here.  It's gorgeous in a desert sort of way, which this Swamp Yankee can't enjoy, and the people are awful.

Rome

San Clemente is honestly the most beautiful place I've ever seen.   I don't know... I've been a lot of places but the SoCal beaches south of LA are just amazing.  And I never had any hassles with the people there either.

Where all the poor people at?
My people
These ones all rich or pretending to be

I saw hell of shanty town along the train tracks.  Hundreds of people over a few miles.  Otherwise everyone is in a Tesla.

I can't figure out where the normal folk are.
And there are very few black peoples, especially here in Santa Barbara

They moved to Texas when they got priced out of California.

And Idaho?  My evangelical Catholic mother-in-law thinks all the best people are fleeing for Texas and Idaho.

Looks to me like the exodus is white conservatives who don't like how democracy has played out here.

It's actually a pretty even spread across a lot of the country, but that's only a fraction of the number of people compared to Texas and the states bordering California. I'm sure the number of people moving in have doubled the population of Idaho, but so would an elementary school trip.

I saw a really cool map recently that showed where Californians are moving to - largest areas are Phoenix and Austin.

I love Northern Cal, the Bay Area is one of my favorite places in the US.   Southern Cal meh, fun to visit every now and then but the LA metro is not my thing.

No idea who the guy is, that's just the first place that google had for that map.
