It doesn't seem like guys get a reputation as a dirty player anymore and this is probably part of it. Back in the day some thought is was worth 15 yards to try and take a player out or give them alligator arms. Some of Buddy's boys were guilty of that. In the next generation Dawkins had a skill set that included using his strength and athleticism to clobber a player while finding the margins just inside of getting flagged. You wonder if this generation of defensive players are so neutered, and with how often the offense picks up chunk plays, does there come a point again where it is worth a flag to just take a real shot at a QB or receiver, especially since you might get flagged anyway.

The Sheldon Brown hit on Reggie Bush would get an automatic 15 today.  The game has changed and not because they give a shtein about player safety either.  Follow the lawsuit money because that's all the owners care about.

It would not.  That was as clean a hit as you could ever see.  And it happened well into the era Brady is complaining about, not in some gauzy hey day of Concrete Charlie taking people down by the throat.
