Dems are the abused partner who keep trying to appease and reason with the monster.  Trouble with breaking away is they have no one to give them a safe place to stay.  Abandon the filibuster in order to free themselves of the wifebeaters, and their putative cousin from WV will lock the door, leaving them exposed in the cold, unable to protect themselves or get anythign done.

And yes, we've talked about how liberalss by nature are less monolithic and obedient.  The whole ethos of conservatism is to close ranks, resist change, protect what you have by fightintg to maintain status quo, not to mention an outsize affinity for authority and suspicion of inquiry that might disrupt or upend..all of which lends itself naturally to uniformity of action.  Liberals however value things that tend to fracture and split a group, honoring inquiry and dialogue, respecting differences, etc.  The liberal party will always suffer a comparative lack of cohesion.
