Afterwards, the players talked about the camaraderie that has been formed with this group since the spring.

"We're friends on and off the field. It's not just cliques where we work together and leave. I think that's something different than a lot of other teams have," said a giddy Lane Johnson.

"We're in a good spot. Best spot we've been in since I've been here. Most fun I've had playing football since I've been here, so, what a time."

The defensive players have overachieved, which is a credit to them and to Jim Schwartz.

Jalen Mills made T-shirts for the secondary that features a photo the defensive backs took after a win earlier this season against the Carolina Panthers.

"I made 'em for the group, surprised 'em," Mills said. "They didn't know they were coming. But we've been calling ourselves 'Gang Green' and then I ended up making the T-shirts off the Thursday night picture we took after we played Cam Newton and them. But that just shows unity. By doing that, it just brings us more together."

The defensive players also go out to dinner together on Thursday nights.

"If you don't make it, you get teased," said safety Rodney McLeod. "You've got to have a good reason. It's usually us, linebackers and secondary."

Added Mills, "That's big, man. And when we go to the dinners, I kid you not. We're not even talking about football. We're talking about life."
