Pit bulls are some of the sweetest dogs I've ever met. The breed isn't intrinsically bad; the problem is the irresponsible owners. Dogs most likely to bite are smaller breeds, like spaniels or "toy" breeds...much like the shorter the guy, the more likely he is to be a fleshpop and become an icehole cop.

he's a great dog beyond his love of chewing furniture legs.

As labs are one of the smartest breeds, they get bored easily. They're also one of the most energetic breeds. Exercise the pooch often and you'll probably have less of a problem with this.

this is my 2nd lab since my kids were born and yeah, you're right, very smart and tons of energy. at this age though even when we run him and after he eats, he still walks past all his chew toys and goes for the chair leg.

to me though, its like having a baby in the house that grabs everything they can get their hands on. it takes work and to your point, you have to be responsible and put the time into them for training and bonding.

Have you tried some bitter apple chew deterrent?

You can make your own deterrent...it's just mixing apple cider vinegar and white vinegar. Might want to test it on an inconspicuous spot on the furniture to make sure it won't stain it.

Sgt PSN

He's obviously sharpening his teeth on the furniture so that he can shred your face apart.

I've got a list of breeds I'd never own, and pit bulls are on the list.  So also are dalmations and chows.  And all toy and small dogs, unless I want a ratter.  If I ever have a rat problem...those little rat terrors are murder machines, it's incredible.

Why no Dalmatian?

I'm pretty much with you though. No small dogs and no pits. Smallest dog I'd own is a beagle for cocker spaniel

Dalmations are probably the most inbred dog in the history of canines. They really should only be available in Arkansas.

Sgt PSN

I can't speak to the excessive inbreeding (I think you could make that argument for damn near any breed), but Dalmations are probably more likely to bite than a pit bull.  They get the good rep of being a firefighter mascot for some reason, but they're actually a bunch of dickheads that like to eat peoples' faces.

I had to get rid of my pitbull, he killed another dog and attacked a 2 year old.

Lol

PhillyPhreak54

Didn't know that about Dalmatians

I don't think I've ever know someone who had one

General_Failure

I heard about a couple that had like a hundred of them.

I have a fantastic female rottweiller, who has won me over to the breed.  Smart dogs, and not too easily perterbed.  Kinda makes sense.  When you're that imposing, there is no need to bark at every goddamn thing that walks by.  You can just look at it.

All the same my next dog will be a german shepherd or a rhodesian ridgeback.  When the rott dies, I'll probably just put in a request for a rescue of a puppy at organizaitons for both and whichever comes up first will be the one I take.
