Trading Hartnell made sense. Trading him for Umberger made no sense. So even when he fails, Hextall still gets half of it right.

hartnell trade was a very good move....yes hartnell is the better player but it wasnt about that...its about having umberger off your books two years earlier than hartnell

I understand getting rid of Hartnell.  But getting Umberger was ludicrous.  He was broken down with Columbus, and possibly was going to be bought out by them.  Hartnell was worth something, Hextall got nothing.

And in general I've been a big fan of Hextall as GM, but he whiffed on that decision.

again not about who you got in return it was about the contract....hartnell was worth garbage cause of his own ridiculous contract...hence getting umberger in return...you weren't getting talent for hartnell so what you do is get cap relief...I mean for god sakes hartnell is under contract until july 2019...that's preposterous

its not like hextall got offered some good young player for hartnell and said "nah farg it I want rj umberger"....hartnell was and is an albatross

I tend to think that they could have gotten something more than Umberger out of dealing Hartnell, but it hardly matters. His contract was garbage, he was not a fit with what modern teams want/need and he needed to go.

which basically was Columbus saying umberger is a slightly bigger pos than hartnells contract so here take this also and lets call it a day
