Had to have our cat put down this morning. Poor thing was only about six years old (don't know exactly - we rescued him from a shelter), but he had dropped nearly 40% of his body weight since June (from 15 pounds to 9), and had gone in to liver failure. We took him to the vet yesterday and she advised us that that to euthanize was the best course of action at that point. Anything else would have been stratospheric in cost and had about zero chance of working.

Gave the kids one more evening with him last night. Did the deed this morning. Still feel zesty.

We had to do that a few years ago with my daughter's cat. He was a crazy little shtein but was more fun than any other pet we've had. I still miss him, actually, and I hate cats in general. His name was Dawkins because from the start we would throw things along the hardwood floors and he would tear ass after them before crashing head-first into chairs, dressers, you name it.
