So Randolph was projected to go between 20 & 30 in the first round.  The Phillies took him 10th and plan to move him from SS to the outfield.

thats one piece of information....others had him as the highest ranked HS bat

its a high risk/high reward move. most draft picks dont pan out anyway, HS kids less so. the other option was to take a nola-type college pitcher that could project in a mid rotation starter. they went with the high upside player that could project into a middle of the order bat, but will probably wind up being larry greene.

if either him or jhaylin ortiz hit then they've done it right.

he had nothing to do with the pick....it was johnny almaraz, the scouting director

the scapegoated marty wolevor picked JP and Nola with his last 2 firsts, and he was the idiot that pushed all those high-upside athletes that all failed. your first point was right....the whole thing is a crapshoot.

they were flopping because of the approach. the phillies were taking athletes first and baseball players second. its a high risk/high reward way of doing things. last year they took almost all college players, which was a kneejerk reaction to the previous failures. this year they are simply going "best bat available."

corny is a pure ballplayer. whether he can hit or not is anyone's guess but he's not the same type of player they went after when they drafted hewitt and greene.

was just reading that apparently this is not the case and the top of the draft next year is loaded with upwards of 3-5 potentially elite prospects

Was listening to Stark a few weeks ago he said this is considered a bad draft but next years is shaping up nice so who knows
