Wasn't really listening/paying attention but I think someone on ESPN mentioned that the NFL is using their "best" replacement refs for the primetime and national games, and that games like the Eagles/Browns are going to get the worst ones.

Awesome.

is it that difficult for the nfl to farging announce a decision on this...so annoying

QuoteBrowns cornerback Joe Haden was on the practice field today, meaning that he's most likely not suspended for Sunday's opener against the Eagles.

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said today in an email that if a player is practicing on Wednesday, he's generally available for this week.

"But there is no specific timetable requirement,'' he wrote. "Each case is unique.''

Shouldn't really matter.  Rookie QB with an injured rookie RB.  No WR or TE that I think can hurt the Eagles.  Average defense without their shut-down corner.  Eagles 31 Browns 17

its more annoying than that it matters....but it does matter as far as the prediction thread....if dimitri patterson starts its probably worth and extra 10-17 pts for the eagles

this is a HUGE development...

QuoteWhen Reid was asked if Brown or Dion Lewis is the No. 2 running back, he said, "we'll see." Brown said he's been taking more reps this week than he has at any point, so the rookie seventh-round pick is likely in the rotation.

If his pass pro is even somewhat adequate, he is easily the best option.

Brown should be the obvious nod as the #2 back. Lewis is more of a change of pace guy. I wish Brown had a quicker second gear but that could develop as the game slows down for him a bit.

i think brown has really nice secondary level burst.....imo polk is the one that doesnt have a second gear....its really what seperates the two

Post by: SD on September 08, 2012, 09:03:37 AM
I knew I was going to have to explain this further: when Brown has daylight he's fine...it's just he can't make a cut then hit that second gear. Now we're spoiled because shady is the best in the league at that but If Brown is ever going to be effective the game is going to have to slow down for him a bit. A great rb either had quick moves or great vision...the truly gifted ones have both. He has neither at this time. He's not as good as Buckhalter who was really underrated but he's better than Eldra Buckley. The skill set is there now he just has to develop.

probably best to wait until he plays a snap in the nfl before comparing him to anyone else much less all pros and guys who had ten year careers in the league....

all im saying is hes a 4.35-4.45 guy....he has a really good second gear in general and a great one for his size

jesus christ here we go again....the last thing juan needs to worry about is constantly shuffling in a 100 different lb packages....shtein he has trouble game planning during the week

QuoteAndy Reid confirmed Friday that he will use all of his linebackers, shuffling them in and out depending on the package, when the Eagles open the season Sunday at Cleveland.

Since the Eagles traded for DeMeco Ryans in March up until, really, Friday, Reid has said that Ryans is a three-down player. Now he isn't.

"I've been very happy with DeMeco," Reid said. "I'm just giving everybody an opportunity. The one thing we've got is experience with play time at positions there. Everybody's going to have an opportunity to get in and do their thing."

Ryans, rookie Mychal Kendricks, and Akeem Jordan are the starters in the base defense. Depending on the Browns' offensive alignment, any one of six - Jamar Chaney, Brian Rolle, and Casey Matthews are the other three - could be on the field in the Eagles' nickel (two linebackers) or dime (one) defenses.

"We had success with it toward the end of last year," Reid said. "Guys know their role. They can focus on it. They're all interchangeable, which is a good thing."

What have you seen in the preseason to make you think otherwise? There was a rumor floating around that the texans were planning on releasing Ryan's. I don't care how long he's been in the league you can either play or you can't. That they're only using him on first and second downs is an acknowledgement he's lost a step.

im def still IN on meeko...pre injury he was a great linebacker...

its still to soon to see how he will be post injury but if hes not effective its more likely because juanny is a complete dumbass...hiring him as DC will go down as one of the worst decisions in nfl history

They probably were going to release him - but not for diminished skills. Like I said last time when we talked about this, when HOU switched to the 3-4 he was phased out. If they were still in the 4-3 he would still be a Texan, and that's straight from the GM's mouth.

I don't judge much from PS especially when the guy is new to a scheme combined with plain Jane playcalling and the DC being a halftard

he was asked the other day what he thought about not being on the field all the time

and he said the right thing - that he goes in the game when juanny asks him too - but you could tell he wasnt happy

i dont know how any player on the entire defense can take seriously anything juanny says much less have to take direction from him

its a joke

What's great is all of Reid's former assistants are showing, with an average defense, how to confuse, frustrate, and shut down Vick. If Clevland had half an offense, the Eagles would be loosing by two scores. Should be a fun year.

Everyone needs to go.

I think this team could do it with a hard nosed disciplinarian type coach. There seems to be a sense of entitlement with these clowns, like they feel their talent alone will net them rings.

the one thing that needed to happen for a sb win this year was that vick was a real qb....he clearly is not....he is the biggest pos ive ever seen....take a god damn three step drop and get rid of it...its absolutely infuriating how long he holds onto the ball

the most dishearting thing about him tho is that he cant run an nfl offense AND he doesnt have explosiveness anymore....thus they are farged on every level with him

all that said they will beat the ravens....all week is is going to be a shtein show on wip and calls for foles....the expectations are going to be rock bottom going into next week but somehow that is the game they will win

seriously he is not capable of not turning the ball over

they cant win like this because the defense sucks, the kicking game isnt good enough and the line is a joke but they ought to turn into a safe defense and running team.

feed shady...play field position...dont give away points...take your big play shots with pimp and hope that works

because throwing the ball 50 times a game cannot possibly work with vick

Two things AR/MM should have learned over the last 10 or so years. One is that when the QB is just getting totally killed and is having a bad game because of it, don't keep getting him hammered. Run the goddam ball. Having an allpro RB probably won't hurt matters.
The other thing is that when Vick gets rattled his game goes right down the shteinter. So, in that case maybe run the goddam ball. Having an ALL PRO rb probably won't hurt matters. I'm guessing maybe others have had similar thoughts.

Absolutely... I was thinking the same watching him throw pick after pick, holding onto the ball forever, throwing the ball across his body into the middle of the field, sidearming passes, not seeing LB's dropping right in front of him.... this cat hasn't changed at all. 2010 clearly just caught the league off guard because ever since the end of that year when they adjusted to him, he's been straight doo... doo.

Andy said in the post game presser they didn't run shady more early because of the fumble. Meanwhile Vick throws 4 awful picks and they keep having him sling the ball across his body while on the run and forcing throws. Did anyone else notice on the 2nd and goal pass that should have been picked he dropped back from the 5 and threw off his back foot around the 17?

He drops back way too far on almost every throw.  It's one of the reason why other teams pressure him so quickly (other than how awful Dunlap is).  He drops back like 10-15 yards and is immediately encountering the DEs rushing on the outside.

He also can't adjust to the goddamn blitz. Get the ball out and stop them from doing that shtein.

He just can't. He can't hit those quick slants and doesn't seem to know the hot routes on a blitz with any consistency to make defenses think twice about flying straight at him.  He needs that long ass 7 step drop because he can't read the defense fast enough on a 3 step drop to get the ball out.

Considering that's the hallmark of this offense, not being able to do that shtein is sort of an impediment to, you know, being competent.

they cant win like this because the defense sucks, the kicking game isnt good enough and the line is a joke but they ought to turn into a safe defense and running team.

x1000.  They have enough with Maclin/Jackson/Celek that if they lean on Shady and the D remains competent that they should get plays through the air despite Vick.

56 passes.  Go farg yourself.

They exploited the Browns pass defense to the tune of 5.6 yards per attempt. Meanwhile, McCoy had 5.5 yards per attempt rushing.

all of vicks quotes about how hard hes worked and how much hes studied and how he spent the off season in philly is all a big fat farging crock of shtein.....go away you pos

Absolutely... I was thinking the same watching him throw pick after pick, holding onto the ball forever, throwing the ball across his body into the middle of the field, sidearming passes, not seeing LB's dropping right in front of him.... this cat hasn't changed at all. 2010 clearly just caught the league off guard because ever since the end of that year when they adjusted to him, he's been straight doo... doo.

couldnt agree more....and the hold on to the ball thing cant be emphasized enough...if you look at 99% of his completions today they were in rhythm....thats what the WCO is all about....but vick on almost every play dropped back and you could literally see him thinking about what to do instead of naturally reacting....he simply cant run this offense....and this is whee i will defend him...he is a terrible qb but hes being asked to do something that is waaaaaaay out of his skill set....this falls on andy imo...once again jamming a circular peg into a triangular hole

I see what youre getting at but when your rb is getting 5-10 ypc and your qb sucks it makes more sense to run the ball more. Even IF the running game is ineffective you keep running the ball to keep the defense honest. And for the love of Hid Andy stop throwing the ball on 1st down . farg the god damn %s in the league. At the very least mix it up.

Look... if they're scoring TD's while they're passing, I don't give a farg if the ratio is 75/1 in favor of the pass. But on days like today when the QB is hurting you more than helping you, throwing picks left and right and can't do shtein right... all I ask is to not be so farging stubborn and take some of the pressure off of him by giving the ball to your all-pro RB who just so happens to be gutting the defense all day long.

Because he(/MM) almost lost this game that way. It's the coaches job to know who is getting the job done and who can't and adjust accordingly.

Because the running game was effective and he went away from it and kept forcing the passing game which obviously wasnt working. There's not one part of me that thinks they're "in the mix". Their ceiling is probably 9-7 and a wc game. I'm all aboard the Foles bandwagon at this point. I was adamantly against it early but Vick is horrid beyond belief and they're never winning shtein with him.

You can't get lower hanging fruit than this without going into hbionic's dreams. But anyway, they're not winning the SB this year. They're not going to compete for one. They're not going to be in the mix. This is a QB-focused league, and Vick is awful. What I want is to be entertained and see McCoy making defenses look stupid.

Stop putting me in a position to defend the guy just because I'd feel better with him as maybe the 4th corner and vet depth. It's retarded.

Stop putting me in a position to defend the guy just because I'd feel better with him as maybe the 4th corner and vet depth. It's retarded.

.again i kind of agree with you

That's a relief. I'd hate to see the time you'd waste on this if you didn't agree.

I'll eat crow on Ryans because from what I had saw and heard I thought he was done. But he was the best player on the field today. The D was solid but the Browns are a horrible team so I'm gonna wait a few more games before I get excited.

I know SD has been preaching it for a while, but is the o-line really that bad? Vick is a more terrible QB than he was in Atlanta, at least then he had speed. I'd jump on the Foles bandwagon, but Vick will undoubtedly be injured soon.

By my count, the Eagles intended to get the ball in Shady's hands (via run or pass) 33 times. However, they used him terribly:

20 times = gained yards
4 times = lost yards/no gain
4 times = called back for penalty
3 times = incomplete pass
2 times = someone fumbles

Part of the problem with Vick and calling a spade a spade is, outside of the first few games he played in 2010, he is incapable of playing with consistency.  He'll still have a few games where he looks like an all-pro but it isn't sustainable.  So, even if they make the playoffs, he can't rip off 3/4 games in a row without having a huge blow-up.  Just not possible, especially as the teams get better with better schemes to throw at him.  Once you make that determination about him, what's the point really?

I wonder if Lurie was sitting in his box pondering what we were - that is, why the farg isn't this fat bastich running the ball against an atrocious defense especially with Vick playing so poorly?

It's just astounding.  The worse the quarterback plays the more they throw it.  I could see if they didn't have a All-Pro caliber running back or even a marginal one, but they have one of the best runners in the game and they just don't give it a second thought until it's almost too late.   Stubborn oaf.

That's because the Eagles need a system QB not a rogue gunslinger. It's why Mcnabb was so effective in this offense. He stuck to the system and improvised when he needed to. Vick improvises as soon as the ball is snapped. I hear a lot of fans/media say "where's the guy we saw the first 7 games of 2010". That guy was trying to win a spot so he played disciplined football for the first time in his career. Now that he's comfortable he's back to the same scrambling mess he's always been.

Title: Re: Week 1 - Cleveland Browns - Discussion Thread

It really comes down to Vick playing within the system like he did in 2010.  His regression to being a player who thinks he has to put it all on him is just frustrating.

At the same time, if Foles was in there we'd see the same old thing that you see everytime a backup QB enters the game.  A balanced gameplan to give the QB a chance to relax.  Instead Braindead Andy and Marty do the same thing every year.
Title: Re: Week 1 - Cleveland Browns - Discussion Thread
Post by: Eagaholic on September 10, 2012, 11:03:29 AM
I don't know why they don't have Vick drop back more rather than using the shotgun It would help with his timing and discipline. I don't buy that it is to help with his seeing the rush because he gets too rattled and skittish anyway. If he has confidence in his pass pro he is worlds better, if he is hit a few times you lose him. They also have to find a way to help him with the blitz, he doesn't use a check down fast enough and it doesn't look like he always has one.

He also narrowly missed I believe 4 pics in about 4 quarters that would have really changed the complexion of how people see him. He does seem to have good skills though but needs at least a year.

The more I think about, the more I like the outcome yesterday. If they'd blown out the Browns easily, they'd be due for a rude awakening. Instead, they get the all-important W in the standings but all the harsh lessons learned that a loss would have given them. Besides, the defense played actually better than I expected (against an admittedly bottom-tier offense), and the offensive line and playcalling both improved as the game went on - not a coincidence.

Of course the big issue here is that Vick sucked hairy donkey balls. Maybe he'll get knee-capped and Foles will actually be good. Maybe he shook off the stink and will play better. I don't know.... I'm just glad I didn't draft him in fantasy.

big picture tho they have to upgrade the qb position...whether that be foles or not....for andy reids first 10 years they had the best qb in the division...now they have the worst and that has to change

Of course Vick could win and I would argue that he's the better QB for this team right now anyway. With an OL that can't protect anyone he still has the ability to steal a game or two with his legs. But the writing is on the wall long-term. This offense needs precision in order to reach its potential. Precision is not something Vick has, or can spell.

i think the line is getting way to much criticism
at least in yesterdays game

the penalties need to cease but they threw the ball 56 times and vick was only sacked twice...i dont believe he was under pressure on any of the interceptions and the team rushed for 150 yards

now im not ready to annoint them....lets see how they do against the ravens defense but overall i liked what i saw...especially as the game progressed

we all knew he was capable of putting up a huge shteinshow of a game.

he'll come back with a 200 yard rushing and passing game and everyone will be sucking his herp cock again.

the bigger problem is that they still threw it over 50 times with awful QB play.

shady was averaging like 9 yards per carry at one point and should have had 200 yards rushing yesterday.

our coach is still the big problem.

After sleeping on it, I feel a little different than yesterday.

Vick did only have 12 pre-season snaps (It has to count for something)

Cleveland's D played their assess off and their secondary did a great job on our WR's.

I agree with Phatty...let's see what happens this week. I'm sure Marty and Co. will make some adjustments (by throwing it only 45-50 times next week)

But Vick's performance was as bad as the game he had vs. the Vikings two seasons ago. It's scary because this team feels like it is only a QB away from doing some serious damage and it feels like we are reverting back to Step 1 while everyone else addresses that position properly...at least our competition.

It was fairly evident that it was another game of Andy's protege's using their playbook knowledge.  Jauron seemed to have everything dialed in.  But as IGY said, Vick was throwing off his backfoot and across his body.  That cant happen.

The Ravens are not that special. Still better and more consistent than the Eagles. I predict a very close game - turnovers and missed FGs could be a problem.

Missed FG's meaning Henery I presume.

Yes, for the record, I have no problem with the Ravens' kicker missing field goals.

The Ravens are not that special.

their offensive line is average and even tho people hear ravens and blindly think incredible defense this defense can be exploited...whether vick can do it is another question...i say he does

I don't think Vick can exploit them but I'm sure Shady can.  Before the score got out of hand, Green-Ellis was gashing them.

Ray Rice however is just as good and will hurt the Eagles, so that's a wash.

Between QBs, Flacco is easily the better judging from the last ten or twelve games each of them has played.

Exactly. Their OL has been shuffled around...Birk can be gotten at C and their defense gave CIN some opportunities last night but they could not make the most of them.
