QuoteIt was Ariane Noelle Patterson's 21st birthday, and she was grateful to be alive.
The Gardner-Webb University student took to her Twitter account on Jan. 17 and posted the message: "Thank you God for another year of life."
Hours later, she collapsed during a religion class and was rushed to nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead, the Associated Press reports.
Thoughts?
God doesn't follow her Twitter feed.
Or he was clearly telling her she was following the wrong religion.
Or maybe God hates twitter.
Or God hates people happy to be alive, and smites them.
If its none of these other things we named, the only other plausible thing I can think of is that she did bad on her last religion exam.
Ye of little faith, bend thine ear to the true gospel: God operates in ways that are strange to men. He is the Lord. It is not our place to question Him but only to rejoice in Him. He took her because He did and we are happy His will was done. Amen.

All before age 45. It's not like it's all CTE, either. Kinda freaky, especially the the dude that got hit by two bolts of lightening. Excellent way to go, if you were a Charger.
QuoteFive months after the team lost to the 49ers in Super Bowl XXIX, 28-year-old linebacker David Griggs died in a car crash in Florida. In 1996 running back Rodney Culver, 26, died when a ValuJet flight from Miami to Atlanta crashed into the Florida Everglades. Two years later, linebacker Doug Miller was struck by lightning - twice - in Colorado, killing him at age 28. In 2008, Curtis Whitley, 39, overdosed and defensive lineman Chris Mims, 38, died of a heart attack.
Sounds like they all sold their sold to get to the Superbowl and the devil came to claim his pay.
I think this is the most rational explanation.

Eight is a high number for a group of 50-60 relatively young people over a span of 18 years, but given the large number of Super Bowl teams in history, it's not statistically unusual that one of those teams would have that many deaths. There's outliers on the high and low ends of any distribution. I don't think anyone from the 86' Giants is dead (for example), and they are all pretty much past 50.
Also worth noting that, contrary to popular belief, there's little evidence that NFL players have shorter lifespans than the general population. (http://www.concretefield.info/forum/index.php?topic=20190.msg756495#msg756495) It seems to us like they die young more often because it's a population of hundreds of men whose lives we follow as fans of the game. If you followed the lives of everyone from your high school, you'd see a similar pattern of deaths -- fewer linked to head traumas and heart problems, but more from other causes.
I don't particularly care to defend the NFL or their safety culture (or lack thereof), but you can go too far when you start assuming everyone who kills themselves does it because of football injuries. Plenty of people commit suicide without CTE, and even in those
with CTE, it may not be actually linked to their deaths. I hope some more third party studies are done on this topic really soon, because the odds of the greedy NFL beancounters, the ambulance-chasing lawyers of former players, and the dopey sports media accurately portraying the scale of this problem (and not ignoring other problems that should be on their radar) is zero.

When those voices become loud enough we will see drastic changes. Guaranteed.

yeah it's common sense that playing football fargs you up. but this won't change anything.
Yeah, because the government and other types don't fly off the handle over sensationalized things like this - say HGH or steroids in baseball.
I think this thing with Seau certainly has the
chance to cause enough of a scene that an inquiry by dopes who know or care little for the actual statistics could occur, and that it could have a dramatic impact on the sport. Am I saying seasons or the game will be canceled? No. I will say this is something the league has obviously been very worried about for a few years now, and have been left to their own devices on it. Seau was an all-star, and one of the most popular players in the sport recently, it has the potential to attract a shteinload of uninformed second-guessers with power to impose all sorts of funniness.
All that being said, probably a good time to move this stuff over to the CTE thread.

I know you've heard this before but my room mate [shellback] is selling his 2009 Shelby convertabile for 25 K plus you have to pick up the remaining payments which is about 8K.
You want a Shelby or any Mustang? I'm thinking about selling mine so I can buy a toy hauler. 05 GT, 5 sp man, leather, everything stock. $13.5k. No deliveries.
Thanks for the heads up, guys. I'm looking for an '03 Cobra, '94/'95 Cobra or a clean ass '91-'93 Fox body.
And you're looking for one that hasn't had a lot of work done to it?
I'm getting rid of my 02 GT vert, as well. I just don't drive it enough to justify the insurance, inspection costs, and garage space.
Sarge...yes. It's like finding a needle in a haystack but I'm not in a hurry to buy so I will keep looking. I don't mind small mods like exhaust or gears but I don't want one that's been completely modded. I'd actually prefer to find a fox body that has 3:73 or 4:10s along with a five lug conversion and rear discs.

the amount of tweets message board posts and general racist talk about rodney is sickening
I can imagine the excessive racial crap being spewed out there. I've deliberately avoided reading any articles online about him so that I don't accidentally start reading user comments. But I will say that the difference between him and most other scum is 1 unjustified beating at the hands of the police, which never would have happened if he weren't driving drunk in the first place. It's not like he was just driving down the street and cops pulled him over for no reason and started beating him. Ex-con on parole, driving drunk and led officers on high speed chase for about 10 miles and resisted arrest. Obviously the cops went WAY overboard on what would be considered reasonable force to restrain him, but King was no innocent victim.
And he had several more run ins with the law after this event too. Another DUI when he drove into a wall, hit his wife with a car and yet another DUI when he ran a red light, refused to pull over again and crashed into a house. I think he got shot once too.
Whatever....cops treating his skull like a piñata for a few minutes brought some serious civil rights issues back to the forefront, allowed for sweeping changes in the LAPD and gave us a pop culture catch phrase. Well done, Rodney.
Probably not.

pretty good stuff.
QuoteA Scotch is fetched for him as he is wheeled into the corner of the bar. "I was like everyone else when Obama was elected – optimistic. Everything we had been saying about racial integration was vindicated," he says, "but he's incompetent. He will be defeated for re-election. It's a pity because he's the first intellectual president we've had in many years, but he can't hack it. He's not up to it. He's overwhelmed. And who wouldn't be? The United States is a madhouse. The country should be put away – and we're being told to go away. Nothing makes any sense." The President "wants to be liked by everybody, and he thought all he had to do was talk reason. But remember – the Republican Party is not a political party. It's a mindset, like Hitler Youth. It's full of hatred. You're not going to get them aboard. Don't even try. The only way to handle them is to terrify them. He's too delicate for that."
When he compares Obama to his old friend Jack Kennedy, he shakes his head. "He's twice the intellectual that Jack was, but Jack knew the great world. Remember he spent a long time in the navy, losing ships. This kid [Obama] has never heard a gun fired in anger. He's absolutely bowled over by generals, who tell him lies and he believes them. He hasn't done anything. If you were faced with great problems in chemistry – to find the perfect gas, to gas a population – you won't know for a long time whether it works. You have to go by what people tell you. He's like that. He's not ready for prime time and he's getting a lot of prime time on his plate at once."
Never read any of his shtein but that bit right there is pretty outstanding. Will add him to the list.

nice blurb of his Eagles accomplishments
QuoteHall of Fame running back Steve Van Buren, who joined the NFL in 1944 and was named to the league's 75th Anniversary Team in 1994, has died at the age of 91.
"On the field and off, as a player, a leader and a man, Steve Van Buren embodied the finest characteristics of our city and our sport," Eagles owners Jeffrey Lurie said in a release. "He was a friend and an inspiration to generations of fans, and the model of what an Eagle should be."
He spent all of his eight NFL seasons with the Eagles, finishing with 5,860 yards. He is the only member of the franchise to ever lead the NFL in rushing — and he did it four times.
Van Buren, who was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1965, also holds the highest single-season punt-return average in team history with 15.5 yards, the franchise's highest career kickoff-return average with 26.7 yards, and the Eagles' top single-game rushing yardage performance with 205. In 2011, LeSean McCoy broke Van Buren's 66-year-old single-season touchdown record of 18. (McCoy finished the season with 20 touchdowns.)

Dan Anderson. Ohio.
*I don't really know any Dan Andersons from Ohio, but I'm sure there has to be one, right?
NFL Films, This is the NFL, NFL Yearbook, etc. were the highlights of the week/year pre internet. Couldn't wait for Saturday afternoon as a kid to watch This is the NFL with Pat Summerall and Tom Brookshire.
RIP Steve.
Having been to NFL flims quite a bit, its amazing what he built. (and thanks to them, I was on Under the Helmet doing a white boy dance on stage with the roots on national TV. No better stage to display my absolute lack of rhythm.)
You always have us.

His role as Mongo in Blazing Saddles was priceless.

My immediate thought was a drug overdose, but getting stabbed in the neck during a home invasion because of his pension money was my second guess...
He got Sean Taylor'd

Is that a racist threat against Asian-Americans?
Get your slurs straight money lover, a twinkie is a flag.

Good thing he got that extra liver. Rich old famous drunks should definitely get the priority.
Never was a big fan of Dallas as a kid, probably because I was a kid. I caught an episode of the revival earlier this year. It wasn't good.
shorebird!!
NOT! Sorry to disappoint you all this close to Christmas.
Hagman will stand in for you today, but your time is coming old ignorant whitey, and with you dies your party.

I had the tv on for background noise and it happened to be on TNT. During commercial breaks they were pimping the revival pretty hard so I checked it out. I stopped paying attention to the show after about 20 minutes and went back to doing whatever the hell it was that I was doing in the first place.....probably posting here.

Damn, 95. Every major league baseball player that had more than a cup of coffee in the big leagues after the mid 1970's had better take a moment and say a little thank you to this guy.

My company sent me to this seminar a few years back that included him and many others (Colin Powell, etc). He was already in really bad shape. Basically, his daughter gave the whole talk, and he was sitting on stage and occasionally throwing in his catch-phrases.

That's what happens when you spend your life being 150 pounds overweight. Andy Reid should take note. Seriously. Take a year off, get the weight thing squared away, and come back to coaching. Not in Philly, though. Anywhere else.
If he couldn't take a year off to try and prevent his kid from killing himself with smack, there's no way he's taking a year off to prevent himself from eating pizza.

Thank you for having existed Mr. Brubeck.
Jenni Rivera. Singer. Plane crash.
Pretty much the equivalent of Gwen Stefani or Taylor Swift dying in a plane crash.
Except those two are famous. Never heard of the other broad.
You're white, that's why.
I did fail to mention she was a Latin superstar.

All true. Supposedly the plane crashed after traveling only 60 miles. Sad, sad, sad. Actually, her death is bigger than a Gwen Stefani's....its the equivalent of Beyonce dying.
