Arkansas RB Darren McFadden was handcuffed by police at a piano bar Thursday after being involved in a "pretty rowdy scene."

A disturbance broke out shortly after midnight at the bar and had spilled into the street. The Heisman runner-up and All American was not charged with a crime and released after merely being cuffed for a few minutes because police felt he was getting "rowdy." If McFadden declares for the NFL Draft, this shouldn't adversely affect him

Well, that was fast...

Task Force to Study D-I Playoff Proposal (http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5jOzOHhzJ9RcxmExccJFtpSg_0ABgD8U60R300)
QuoteHis playoff proposal used the Sugar, Orange, Rose and Fiesta bowls as the opening round, leading to semifinals and a championship game. Adams said he believes the study will result in additional tweaking to the BCS system.

"It's not just me that's talking about tweaking again," said Adams, who also is chairman of the NCAA executive committee.

"It's some of my colleagues. It's the people in the conferences. It's others. I don't know if we will all get to the exact same decision."

So, you add two more semifinal "bowl" games?  That will make the sponsors of the Rose, Orange, Sugar, and Fiesta THRILLED!

Post by: Cerevant on January 16, 2008, 01:39:46 PM
That's why I liked my 4-team playoff as a transition - no dilution of the current format.  If anything, it raises the bar for the big 4 because now they have to take two "left overs" since 1 & 2 go to the big show.

Purdue coach Joe Tiller upset with losing recruit to Michigan
February 7, 2008
By JOHN RABJOHNS
INDIANAPOLIS STAR

A star recruit's signing-day decision to renege on an oral commitment had Purdue football coach Joe Tiller fuming Wednesday.

Roy Roundtree, a nationally ranked receiver and kick returner from Ohio, signed with Michigan on the first day of the college football signing period.

Roundtree committed to Purdue in May and reaffirmed his decision many times since.

He signed with new Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez after a visit to Ann Arbor, Mich., last weekend.

"If we had an early signing date, you wouldn't have another outfit with a guy in a wizard hat selling snake oil get a guy at the last minute, but that's what happened," Tiller said.

Unlike most sports, football does not allow high school players to sign a binding national letter of intent before their senior season. Tiller has been among the growing number of coaches campaigning for an early signing date.

Roundtree, rated as a four-star recruit on a five-star scale, is described as having breakaway speed. The 6-1, 155-pound receiver played for Ohio power Trotwood-Madison.

"The problem when you lose a recruit at this late date is it's really impossible to bounce back and recover," Tiller said. "You have to wait a full year to recover. Given the position, etc., that could be detrimental.

"On the other side of the coin, maybe the guy did you a favor. It makes you wonder about the guy, the people surrounding him, the people in that building who would let that happen. I can say this: We won't go back in that building again and we won't be the only institution not to."

One of Roundtree's teammates, Michael Shaw, backed out of a commitment to Penn State and signed with Michigan.

Several recruiting experts listed those switches among the biggest surprises Wednesday.

Roundtree is the second recruit Purdue lost. Louisiana four-star defensive back Jerico Nelson committed to Purdue on Jan. 22, then switched to Arkansas last weekend. Tiller said losing Nelson, whom the Boilermakers had been recruiting for a short time, was much different than the two years they spent on Roundtree.

Purdue signed Carmel tight end Jordan Brewer, though he said several schools, including Indiana, Ball State and Illinois, continued to show interest.

"The Boilers stuck with me even though my junior year I wasn't really that good," he said. "Then my senior year I went to all kinds of camps and got better. They stuck with me through the hard times and the good times."

Tiller, heading into his final season at Purdue, said he's concerned about a loss of integrity among Big Ten coaches.

"There has been an unspoken rule that if a guy commits and you've been recruiting him hard, you always call them up and say, 'Are you sure about this?' If he says yes, you back off.

"We had a basketball issue where that wasn't true. We have a football issue where that isn't true, so maybe that's changing."

North Central's Eric Gordon committed to Illinois for basketball and maintained for months he would honor it before signing with Indiana.

Last February, Notre Dame football coach Charlie Weis lost several oral commitments on signing day and blasted the poaching of other schools' recruits.

"We're not the only school it's happened to," Tiller said, "but whatever issues are out there are solvable if we address them in an adult type manner."

what a waste...

NEW ORLEANS -- LSU says coach Les Miles has kicked quarterback Ryan Perrilloux off the team.

Coach Les Miles said Perrilloux, who had been suspended three times in his college career, "didn't fulfill his obligation as an LSU student-athlete," but did not offer details.

LSU said Friday that Perrilloux is expected to finish out the spring semester at the school.

Miles suspended Perrilloux in February, shortly before spring practice began, for unspecified team violations. Perrilloux's former high school coach, who remains close to the quarterback and his family, has said Perrilloux missed a mandatory team meeting, then missed classes to attend his father's funeral without notifying coaches.

It was the third suspension for Perrilloux, who was considered the favorite to succeed Matt Flynn after leading LSU to two victories -- including the Southeastern Conference championship game -- when Flynn, a senior, was injured during the 2007 season.

Perrilloux, who was also suspended by the Tigers last summer, was on the fringe of a counterfeiting investigation and was caught trying to enter a Baton Rouge casino with false identification. He also was involved in a fracas at a nightclub in November, but was cleared of wrongdoing.

QuotePerrilloux missed a mandatory team meeting, then missed classes to attend his father's funeral without notifying coaches.

Man, I don't know how close he was to his father, but thats adding insult to injury, getting kicked off the team right after your Dad dies. Yeah, maybe he should have told the coaches, but how did they not know in the first place? It's your starting qb!

I know he's been disciplined before, but damn.

Anyone else watching this UCLA - Tennessee game?

Great game.

UCLA shocked everyone with an amazing come back. Their QB played horrible (4 picks) in the first half but buckled down in the second and drove them for the lead.

Tennesse then goes down the field in about :25 for the tying FG.

Now they go into OT; UCLA gets a FG....Tennesse's kicker just missed...UCLA wins.

I don't buy that.  Jim Tressel is a great coach and would do anything to help his chances to win.  If he thinks the smart play is to go for two, he does it.

<rant>
Explain something to me: when a team is ranked higher than another team the implication is that the first team is better than the second team.  Simple, right?  So, when they play each other, one would naturally assume that the higher ranked team would win the game.

If this is the case, why would a team losing to a higher ranked team fall in the polls?  Isn't that what was supposed to happen?  Didn't it just confirm that the original rankings were right?

It is a disgrace that these polls mean anything.
</rant>
Title: Re: College Football 2008
Post by: Drunkmasterflex on September 26, 2008, 09:51:59 AM
I think it depends on the degree of separation, if you are talking about a top 5 team vs. a team in the high teens low twenties then yes.  If they are close in rank and the higher ranked team stomps the other team then they should fall.

i hate psu but that is an impressive win

the big 10 is a jv league compared to the sec and even the big 12, but if things shake right the liberal jew ny media could easily put psu in the national title game. which would be nice because it would give those losers in the middle of pennsyltucky something to do.

also temple acted like temple and lost to central mich 24-14. might i add that their fans know how to tailgate. also might i add that they dont know how to attend a game. basically people tailgate, go in for the 2nd qtr, then leave at halftime. i mean, what the farg else are you gonna do in mt. pleasant, why the farg not stay?

Beckum is a hybrid WR/TE, which means he doesn't really fit either place in the NFL.

Texas is getting exposed by Tech, they may still make a comeback but they're not the #1 team in the nation. They lose PSU moves up to #2 and should play for the national championship.

The polls are a farging fraud.  How the farg does Tech leapfrog Penn State in the AP?  farging joke.  Penn State is going to get screwed out of yet another title game.

Texas Tech has to play at home against Oklahoma State next week and at Oklahoma on November 22 even before a possible Big 12 Title game.  Needless to say, if TT comes through all of that undefeated, just tip your cap to them.

Alabama still has to play at LSU and in the SEC title game to stay undefeated.

I can nearly guarantee both of those things will not happen, and if they do, oh well.  There is absolutely no argument that the Big 10 is better than either the Big 12 or SEC this year.

WAHHHHHH

farging babies. penn state plays in a second rate conference that isnt even on the same level as the sec or big 12. t tech will lose again because their schedule is too hard. penn state plays no one and should coast into the title game.

one thing that could hurt is the big 10 ending its season so early. a lot of the voting is "what have you done for me lately" and some teams plays 3 games between the end of the regular season and the time penn state will beat michigan st.

thats on psu and the conference for not playing the same game the other conferences are. tradition bla bla bla get with the times and play a title game or extend your season another week or two.

The Big Ten is genius for not having a conference title.  It is one more chance for a team to get a loss that could prevent them from getting to the big game.

If they haven't already lost, I guarantee either TT or Bama will lose in their conference championship game.

Seriously, there is no need to get your panties in a twist about this anyway.

I would like to see PSU win the National Championship as much as anyone, but you can't even argue that the SEC and Big 12 are much, much better conferences this year.

The BCS is bullshtein.  The polls are bullshtein - at one point a coach was called out for their vote (might have even been Paterno) and he said that he didn't know about it because he had a graduate assistant fill out the poll.

Go vote now! (http://www.talkingpointsmemo.com/news/2008/11/bama_mccain_on_what_to_change.php)
QuoteOn the eve of the election, the two presidential candidates were interviewed via satellite by ESPN's Chris Berman. The taped interviews were to air during halftime of game between the Washington taterskins and the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Both candidates were asked to name one thing they would change in sports.

"I think it is about time that we had playoffs in college football. I'm fed up with these computer rankings and this and that and the other. Get eight teams — the top eight teams right at the end. You got a playoff. Decide on a National Champion," Obama said.

just so you know in 95 ups would have beaten nebraska but that was when the big ten wasnt a laughing stock and penn state had real big time talent...this year they arent even as good as osu was last several years and looked what happened to them against real comp...penn state is a fraud....im rooting for them because im a fan but they should not get in the bcs title game...theres at minimum 8-10 teams better than them this year
Title: Re: College Football 2008

That's why I want a playoff.  If you are right, PSU is out in the first round, and Texas (for example) doesn't get screwed out of a shot.  If you are wrong, they get the opportunity to show people like you that they don't know what they are talking about.

This isn't just PSU bias, but by your (and MDS's) logic there shouldn't even be conferences, because if you aren't playing in the Big 12 or SEC, you can't make a case for playing in the championship game.  Who needs a regular season?  Just turn the regular season into a big tournament!
Title: Re: College Football 2008

the regular season is a big tournament now...which is why college football is the best sport in the world....making a playoff would take that greatness away...it would still be great but its perfect now

No, see in a tournament there is a seeding done to balance the field and to try and get the best teams to the title.  In NCAA football, all the best teams are apparently in the same region of the bracket.

As a PSU fan, I honestly don't see any scenario where they would be favored in a national championship game.  They have the defense to beat anyone, but the offense is erratic.  Still, college football can be very unpredictable, so getting there is half the battle.
Title: Re: College Football 2008

you got it exactly opposite

their defense is why they would lose to a florida...they would get shredded by a team that has that kind of speed....the big ten offenses are a travesty

their offense is the only thing that could keep them in the game...penn state has a great o line and theyd have to clock control run game all night long and mix in a nice night by clark to have any chance

The joke is the polls & BCS.  I watched the #2 team in the country get their asses handed to them by a far superior team.  Home field advantage does not account for 44 points.

Almost as sad a joke is Oregon State having a shot at the Rose Bowl for a rematch with a team that gave them a solid ass-whupping.  I can't muster any enthusiasm for watching that game.

Todd needs to do this   http://www.playboyu.com/college-sportswriter-contest
QuoteD o you think you have what it takes to be the next Rick Reilly? Are you ready for one of the biggest writing assignments of your college career? Playboy is looking for the best student sportswriter in the country to cover next year's Final Four. If you write about sports for your college paper and think you have what it takes, submit examples of your best work to PlayboyU.com. If we select you as the best student sportswriter in the country, you'll get a plum assignment: a trip to the Final Four in Detroit and the opportunity to cover the weekend tournament for Playboy U. It's one writing assignment you won't get from your college professor.

The rules are simple. The contest is open to anyone 18 years of age or older as of November 10, 2008. Send us a copy of three of your best original sports articles that have been published in your school newspaper, along with a copy of your current college ID, via e-mail or snail mail. Each of the articles will be judged on creativity, originality, reporting skill and writing skill. Our three expert judges, including long-time Playboy sportswriter Gary Cole, will select one winner to attend the 2009 NCAA Final Four in Detroit, Michigan. Along with a guest, the winner will be provided with round-trip airfare, hotel accommodations for four nights and, of course, the opportunity to report back from Final Four weekend and the championship game to Playboy U.

Hey, there having a hard enough time finding a 6-6 team out there.  Agreement is with the Pac 10 but UCLA and Stanford couldn't beat a pre K flag football team.  ASU was just out here two years ago so no ones to excited about that matchup again.  Looking more and more like a team from the MAC.  Irish are still a rumor.

Since the Iowa/Minnesota game was a blowout, these people found something better to do (http://www.twincities.com/ci_11075245?source=most_viewed).

QuoteUniversity of Minnesota Police Chief Greg Hestness said similar citations at the Metrodome or on campus usually involve public urination.

He said it was the first time in his six years at the U that his force has interrupted a sex act during a Gophers game.

Hestness assumed the woman was embarrassed about being caught: She initially gave a false name to officers and had to be identified by her husband before she was released.

The man was attending the game with his girlfriend, according to police.

LOL

And... the aftermath for the married woman.... (http://www.desmoinesregister.com/article/20081126/NEWS/81126006)

BCS DECLARES GERMANY WINNER OF WORLD WAR II
US Ranked 4th

After determining the Big-12 championship game participants the BCS
computers were put to work on other major contests and today the BCS
declared Germany to be the winner of World War II.

"Germany put together an incredible number of victories beginning with
the annexation of Austria and the Sudetenland and continuing on into
conference play with defeats of Poland, France, Norway, Sweden,
Denmark, Belgium and the Netherlands. Their only losses came against
the US and Russia; however considering their entire body of work--
including an incredibly tough Strength of Schedule--our computers
deemed them worthy of the #1 ranking."

Questioned about the #4 ranking of the United States the BCS
commissioner stated "The US only had two major victories--Japan and
Germany. The computer models, unlike humans, aren't influenced by head-
to-head contests--they consider each contest to be only a single,
equally-weighted event."

German Chancellor Adolph Hiter said "Yes, we lost to the US; but we
defeated #2 ranked France in only 6 weeks." Herr Hitler has been
criticized for seeking dramatic victories to earn 'style points' to
enhance Germany's rankings. Hitler protested "Our contest with Poland
was in doubt until the final day and the conditions in Norway were
incredibly challenging and demanded the application of additional
forces."

The French ranking has also come under scrutiny. The BCS commented "
France had a single loss against Germany and following a preseason #1
ranking they only fell to #2."
Japan was ranked #3 with victories including Manchuria, Borneo and the
Philippines.

That game last night was thoroughly enjoyable.  There's a defensive back for Buffalo who made about four or five spectacular plays although one of them was called for a personal foul which was bullshtein.

B.C. & V.T. on the other hand might be the worst game I've seen so far this year.  Boring beyond belief.  And it looks like there's about 20,000 people in the stands in Tampa.  Shocking, I know.

Holy crap did Cincy look bad.  Jet lag, already clinched a BCS bowl, to many Mai Tais Friday night or whatever but they looked like shtein last night.  UH was up 24-10 with 12 minutes left but being the suckfest they are Hawaii handed the game to the Bearcats as they were able to capitalize on several UH boners down the stretch.

They're lucky to have surrendered only a FG after the QB sack-fumble, and now this awful awful decision to run the ball out of the endzone and fumble it again.  If UCONN wins this game, it will be a miracle on the order of a resurrection.

I won't care about college fb until they have a playoff.

Utah's win was a more dominant win over a better opponent than Ohio State, and was the final win in an undefeated season. Utah has some kind of argument at least. And USC beat the shtein out of PSU. Scraping by the #10 team in the final seconds of the game doesn't really add to the evidence that Texas should be #1. They can talk about the Big 12 seeding or the BCS ranking all they want, the simple fact remains that Texas was not the best Division I football team this year.

Nonsense. There's absolutely no way to know that since, you know, there isn't a format by which the best teams can actually play each other and find out for sure.

the utah win was not any more impressive than the texas win

im certainly no big ten fan and im not pimping ohio state but they are a better team than georgia...georgia was simply not a very good team this year and the sec overall was really down

georgia got worked at home giving up 41 against the same alabama team utah beat...they also lost to gt at home who got murdered by a weak lsu team in a bowl....i know the transitive property doesnt always work and you can make unending arguments using it but im quite confident that texas would beat utah eight or nine times out of 10...utah isnt even one of the five best teams in the country much less the best...their schedule was a complete travesty and even in a down sec this year utah has at least three losses if they play in it

Florida's sort of #1! (http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/columns/story?columnist=wojciechowski_gene&id=3820697&sportCat=ncf)

QuoteIs it the University of Tebow, which beat Oklahoma on Thursday night to claim the BCS championship?

Is it Utah, the only undefeated team in the country?

Is it one-loss Texas, which still can't believe it got squeezed out of the BCS title game?

Or is it one-loss USC, which pile-drived Penn State in the Rose Bowl and probably stole the glasses off JoePa's statue, too?

the more I read about Pete Carroll talking about Sanchez's shot at the NFL, the more backwards it gets

regardless if you want a player back on your team, why would you keep belaboring the point of how hard its going to be for Sanchez to make it at that level and how hes "going against the grain", etc.?

Im not that big of a fan of Sanchez, but christ at least give the kid who has won you a ton of games a ringing endorsement at the podium if thats his choice and leave the criticism behind close doors..dont get it
