Yeah, all I know is they worked him out a bunch of times and really liked him.

From KFFL:

Paul Schwartz, of the New York Post, reports the Philadelphia Eagles have worked out Albany CB Rashad Barksdale several times.

I know a bit about him. I went to an Albany game earlier his year, they were playing some scrub team (how surprising.) He had a pick and a pass defensed, he seems really fast. Good size too.

QuoteALBANY'S BARKSDALE ON GIANTS' RADAR

NY Post
By PAUL SCHWARTZ

April 27, 2007 -- With all the comprehensive scouting, time and money invested in the NFL Draft, true sleepers may no longer exist. But there are undiscovered gems to be mined and the Giants may uncover one in Rashad Barksdale.

The Giants own eight selections in this weekend's NFL Draft and sometime Sunday, perhaps in the sixth or seventh round, they may take a flier on Barksdale, a cornerback from Albany who, despite a blatantly limited football resume, has suddenly caught the attention of NFL personnel.

"I feel, deep down inside, that I can do it," Barksdale said in a phone interview with The Post.

The Giants apparently are intrigued. They brought him in last week for a visit, rare treatment for someone who will either go late in the draft or maybe not at all. The Giants were one of five NFL teams on March 19 to attend Albany's Pro Day, where Barksdale became more than a novelty act by clocking in at a blazing 4.38 seconds in the 40-yard dash.

The Eagles have worked him out several times. A scout from the Bears told Barksdale he'd be a good fit for their Cover-2 defense. The 49ers and Cardinals have offered similar encouragement. This past Wednesday, the Packers checked in with a call.

"I know he's on the radar screen for quite a few teams," said agent Tony Agnone, who zeroed in on Barksdale's athleticism thanks to some inside information. Agnone's daughter, Blakely, was a lacrosse player at Albany.

No Great Dane has ever cracked an NFL lineup - one player has ever been drafted - and it would be strange and ironic if Barksdale with one year of experience emerges as the first. He was a solid prospect coming out of Hudson (N.Y.) High School but went to Hudson Valley Community College and then Albany intent on pursuing a baseball career. After hitting .277 as a fleet-footed outfielder, Barksdale realized baseball wasn't going to happen.

With one year of eligibility remaining, Barksdale last summer asked Albany football coach Bob Ford if he could try out for the team, which competes at the Division I-AA level in the Northeast Conference.

"In all honesty, I thought we'd be getting a special teams player," said Ford, entering his 34th season as Albany's head coach.

The 6-foot, 208-pound Barksdale worked out at cornerback with the third team. He quickly moved up to the second team and before the opener vaulted into the starting lineup. "I was absolutely shocked," Ford said, "at how easy the game of football came to him."

In his first game, Barksdale returned a punt 38 yards in a 17-16 victory at Lehigh. He sealed a 17-10 upset at Delaware with his second interception of the game, at the goal line in the closing minute.
"As the season progressed he showed some nuance, some savoir-faire," Ford said.

Barksdale the past few years on the Albany campus saw the Giants up close during their month-long stay for training camp. More than once, he was mistaken for Tiki Barber and hounded for autographs, confusion that ended when Barksdale hopped into his Honda Civic. Barksdale said he knows he's a project that needs time. Imagine if that development took place on the same Albany grass where this improbable journey started barely nine months ago?

"I've thought about it a couple of times," Barksdale said. "I'd be back on my own practice fields, but it would definitely be different. Instead of a purple jersey, it would be a Giants jersey and helmet. That would be awesome."

I actually like a pick like this one.  The guy is obviously raw but has the kind of measurables that could make him a good prospect in the nFL.  With his size and the fact that he played corner for only one year, he could be moved to safety and probably be taught to cover that back third of the field with relative ease.

At least I hope.

I wouldnt be surprised if he makes the team. They only have 4 CBs on the roster as of now (if you want to count Gaddis as a safety) and he has a lot of potential. Practice squad at least, but I'd prefer to have him on the 53. It would have really helped if they dealt Moats, Lewis, McDougle, Dhani, etc.

I'm sure Dhani's all but cut at this point. Likely McDougle too. I think Lewis might be the only one from that list with a better than 50% chance to make the roster.

Cut them now, they don't deserve an offseason roster spot. That means one more UDFA they can bring in to camp.

Moats is as good as gone too but he at least has some trade value.  Even if we can only get a 7th from the Colts for him, it's something.

One of the WIP announcers was saying this guy was a baseball player and only played 1 year of College football. He had a PC and said his first passion is baseball but he chose football cause he likes being apart of a team. Said he had no idea he'd be drafted until teams started working him out and like what the saw. 6th rounders are project picks but this one is even moreso than usual.

I'm a Patriots fan, but I wanted to congratulate you guys on getting Rashad Barksdale. He's a guy I've met a couple times; I'm an Albany native, and he is a friend of one of my best friends who attends UAlbany. In fact, my friend happened to play basketball with Rashad only a couple hours or so after he was drafted. He said he went out and bought a Lexus when he first found out, but other than that was still the same, great guy.

My friend also told me he's really looking forward to being an Eagle and also said he's one of the best athletes he's ever seen (my friend has run track with some Olympic-class athletes, too, so take that as an endorsement), and looked really good on the football field despite only starting to play this year. Another of my buddies plays football at UA and said he was the best player on the team after one year of football. Here's hoping he does well for you guys.

Danes have fingers crossed
Barksdale, Coleman, Hobbs hoping to hear from NFL teams during draft

By MARK SINGELAIS, Staff writer
First published: Friday, April 20, 2007

ALBANY -- Hudson native Rashad Barksdale revived his football career with a nervous phone call to the University at Albany coaching staff last August.
Barksdale is hoping to receive a call during the NFL draft next weekend, though he insisted he'll be just as happy to sign as an undrafted free agent.

Barksdale is projected as a possible late choice in the seven-round draft April 28-29, an amazing development for someone who played one year of college football.

Barksdale, a cornerback, was an outfielder on the UAlbany baseball team before trying out for football last summer.

"It's been really nice," Barksdale said. "I was fortunate to be blessed with talent and made the best of my abilities to come out and play football. If you'd have asked me four years ago where I'd be, I would have said playing baseball."

Three UAlbany football players -- Barksdale, defensive end Andre Coleman and offensive lineman Jacob Hobbs of Schenectady -- are attracting interest from NFL scouts in advance of the draft.

Barksdale said he has been told he has a "slight chance" of being taken in the sixth or seventh round. He visited the New York Giants and met with coach Tom Coughlin on Wednesday and will receive a visit from a Philadelphia Eagles scout on Monday.

Barksdale is represented by agent Tony Agnone, who also works for Giants star defensive end Michael Strahan.

"I'm not really worried about (being drafted) because I just want to get into a (training) camp," Barksdale said. "I'll be able to get into a camp, and when that happens, it's up to me to make the best out of it."

UAlbany offensive coordinator Peter Rossomando said the Arizona Cardinals have graded Barksdale as talented enough to be chosen on the first day of the draft, which includes the first through third rounds. That doesn't mean Arizona would take Barksdale that early, if the Cardinals feel no one else would draft him at that point.

Barksdale, who's listed at 6-foot-2, 210 pounds, tantalized scouts by running the 40-yard dash in 4.38 seconds   :o at UAlbany's pro day last month, attended by scouts from the Giants, Eagles, San Francisco, Green Bay and Chicago.

"I only played one year, and I just think I have so much more I can offer down the road," he said.

That road began last summer, when Barksdale resumed his football career with a phone call to the UAlbany coaches that made him feel "like a little kid wanting to call some girl." But he was welcomed with open arms by UAlbany coach Bob Ford, who had seen Barksdale play at Hudson High.

When he got drafted I went to the Scouts, Inc. page on ESPN.com and there was nothing about him there.  Not even the customary "30" rating they give anyone who played college football and declared for the draft.

That scared me a little, especially considering he was a sixth round draft pick.

Whatever, though.  If Hank Baskett can make the Eagles and contribute two sensational 80 yard-plus touchdowns, why can't this baseball player become this year's cinderfella story?

The question is this... could Barksdale cover Baskett like a blanket?

More importantly, who would win a fight between the two of them?
(Actually, that's a trick question.  The answer is Chuck Norris.)

I have to come your board and tell my story about Rashard. He is just a awesome athlete. He went to Hudson High School in New York nasty at baseball actually hit a bomb off me. He is actually the fastest guy i have ever seen he hit a line drive sraight to the center fielder and was standing on 2nd before the center fielder fielded it. He went to Ualbany to play baseball then his senior season decides to throw the pads on. The guy has tons of heart and the perfect word RAW. He also lead the region in rushing yards when he played for hudson high school. I wish the Broncos drafted him. Good luck this season Eagle Fans.

igy, unless they've said something that I missed I doubt they're planning to play him at safety. They've already got Dawkins, Gaddis, Considine and Mikell. I doubt they want to go with 5 players at safety and only 4 at corner.

That said, I like him. Like I posted earlier on the first page (or so) he seems pretty good. He really stood out to me when I saw him play. I'm actually pretty surprised I remember a single player from an Albany game that I went to before November.

Did I ever tell you about the time Rashad Barksdale showed up at my daughter's wedding? You know my daughter, she's a beautiful girl. Well, he's standing right between me and my daughter at the ceremony. He's got no right to be there, but he's drunk and he's Barksdale! Well, long story short: the priest accidentally marries me and Barksdale! We spend the weekend in the Poconos - he loves me like I've never been loved before!

Here are the 10 Day Two moves I liked the most:

3. The Eagles picking this year's Marques Colston in Round Six. Ok, so Rashad Barksdale (201st pick) might not titilate quite as much as Colston, who played offense, but the cornerback from Albany is one of the best athletes in the draft and could turn out to be one of the best roundabout stories we have heard in some time. Barksdale is a four-year baseball player whom Nolan said "looks like Willie Mays catching the ball in center field." And with Brian Dawkins, Lito Sheppard and Sheldon Brown in tow, there's no rush to develop, and he has great teachers in front of him.

QuoteBarksdale: I Hate The Giants
It isn't common to see a guy who played only one year of college football, at a Division I-AA school for that matter, get drafted in the NFL. However, Rashad Barksdale is not only a freak of an athlete (4.43 40-yard dash) and one of the biggest corners on the Eagles (almost 6-feet, 208 pounds), he picks up the game of football like a pro.

A baseball player his first three years of college, the rookie from Albany jumped from the diamond to the gridiron only for his senior season, where he shocked everyone by getting 37 tackles, breaking up three passes and grabbing a team-high three interceptions.

"I don't think I need anything set up special for me, football just comes so natural to me," Barksdale said. "I feel so much more comfortable playing football, even after one year of it. ?I feel like I could do anything a four-year guy from a big-time school could do. I don't find myself any different from they are."

Still, his adjustment to the new sport at the professional level wasn't helped from the get-go. While he has it now, the team had a wrong address, and so his playbook got lost in the mail.

Just like Texas native Kevin Kolb, Barksdale won't please any fans by letting them know he grew up rooting for the Cowboys, but he certainly has a dislike for another NFC East rival.

"I'm a big fan of Brian Dawkins," he said. "I've been waiting for a long, long time for him to knock out Jeremy Shockey. I'm from New York, but I hate the Giants, and I don't really like Shockey at all."

Barksdale projects to probably be the best 6th round pick the Eagles had during Andy Reid's tenure. He has all the tangibles in terms of athleticism and in that video interview he seems to have great confidence and demeanor considering he's only been playing football for a year. He should be a fun player to watch and root for.

Well, I did say "projects" meaning he has very good value for a 6th round pick as evidenced by the characteristics that are tangible -- like how fast he can run the 40, his size, his seeming ability to pick up on the nuances of football relatively quickly, etc.

He could bust. That is definitely a possibility. A lot of great athletes just don't perform well in the NFL. But, considering he was drafted in the 6th round, he is at a "need" position, and considering all the other players that were available at that pick, this was a very good pick-up for the Eagles in terms of value.

I don't expect much from him his first season. If he is a solid special teams performer on kick-offs and maybe a gunner on punts then I think that would be a very productive year giving his current experience playing football. If he actually gets on the field for a considerable amount of time in Nickel/Dime situations, and performs well, then that would be icing on the cake for me.

QuoteCornerback Rashad Barksdale is the fourth Eagles draft pick to sign his rookie contract. On Wednesday, the former Albany product signed a four-year deal to join linebacker Stewart Bradley, running back Tony Hunt and safety C.J. Gaddis to sign.

QuoteTo celebrate his newfound riches, Barksdale is not going to fritter away his money on trivial items. Instead, he's going to pay off his student loans. That's something you rarely hear of.

"I'm going to get that over with so it doesn't hurt my credit," said Barksdale after rookie camp practice Wednesday. "I'm going to get that out of the way. It's been four years of student loans and now that I am very fortunate to have the money to just pay it off instead of other college guys, who come out of school and they have so much stress just thinking about paying it off."

Seriously, these sentiments have me scrambling for the bandwagon.

That's great.   :-D :yay
