QuoteIn his six seasons in New Orleans, defensive end Darren Howard was referred to as "the cornerstone" of that defense. He was so highly regarded that the Saints twice used the franchise tag on him during the time of free agency, limiting his mobility.
But after an injury-plagued 2005 season that limited Howard to 12 games and 3 ½ quarterback sacks, the Saints understood it was more practical to give Howard a chance to shop his services.
And two days into free agency, Howard is in Philadelphia, visiting the Eagles at the NovaCare Complex on Sunday. He will meet the media this afternoon, around 3 p.m. PhiladelphiaEagles.com will have complete coverage.

Eagles | Team meeting with Howard today?
Sun, 12 Mar 2006 05:51:24 -0800
Bob Brookover, of the Philadelphia Inquirer, reports two league sources said that free agent DE Darren Howard (Saints) is scheduled to visit the Philadelphia Eagles Sunday, March 12.
Sign that farger. For the love of almighty Beelzebub, sign him!
But after an injury-plagued 2005 season that limited Howard to 12 games and 3 ½ quarterback sacks...
now that's more like the Eagles plan :-X >:(
Two tangents worth discussing:
1. If the Eagles do not strike a deal with Howard, which FA do they look to next to upgrade the D-Line?
2. If the Eagles sign Howard, where does he likely get inserted into the starting lineup? Will he start opposite Kearse at DE, with Cole as the first guy off the bench, or will the Eagles have him start at DT?
Howard would start at RDE and get the majority of snaps IMO.
FF,
Regarding tangent two: He'd start at DE, on the right side. I don't understand why you'd put him at DT. Just because that position needs help? That's a bad reason, imo.
Good points. At least he has the flexibility to play DT on obvious passing downs. I like the possible firepower of throwing Kearse, Patterson, Howard, and Cole at the quarterback on 3rd and long.
On obvious passing downs, sure. But even then, I'd prefer to see what Cole and Patterson can do from inside and let the two range rovers on the outside do their thing. Cole's scrappy motor is a better fit for getting over a guard. On the outside, I would always prefer the pure DE, and at 6'3" 275 lbs Howard presents an unusually big and fast threat to most OTs.
Like you said though, it's a mouth-watering thought, Kearse Patterson Cole Howard. With a decent bench behind them. And they better be good, because the LBs farging suck.

That is pretty GD exciting right there. Who wants to bet that Kearse's sack total will go up if the Eagles sign Howard?
GET HOWARD! Ok...dont...get...hopes...up.
Kearse
Howard
Cole
McDougle
draft pick / Thomas
Walker
Patterson
Rayburn
veteran rotational guy / Hollis
draft pick (BUNKLEY!)
I would be in love.
Wonder if Kearse would revert back to #90 so Howard could retain 93.
And here's my prediction: If Howard leaves town without a contract today, he's not going to sign here. You heard it here first.

Screw the money. Seriously. Kearse is wildly overpaid by the Eagles. Anthony Weaver just got ridiculous money to sign with Houston. You better believe that Howard is seeing dollar signs in his future, despite his injury last season, and if the Eagles aren't prepared to pony up the dough, someone else with 8 figures of cap room (almost every team) will.
In short, when it comes to talking money with Howard, Joe Banner had better just step out of the room for a moment so the deal can get done.
Spend money!!
Howard is the only impact DE left on the market as far as I can tell. Hope Banner gets the deal done asap.

I'd call that semi-encouraging.
Not really. If they can't work out a deal, he'll just give the boilerplate about really liking what he saw but wanting to visit a few more places before he makes his final decision... etc etc.
dont let that shorty leave the novacare without a contract.
I gotta believe the fools in charge of these things aren't dumb enough to call in the media so they can explain how they failed to sign Howard.

When you first posted this, I was going to question it, but got sidetracked.
Cole can't play DT. WAAAAY too small. Motor is one thing, but for a DE to play inside on passing downs, he has to be able to matchup physically with the interior of the line. Howard has been known to do that, but Cole? No way. I would contend that Cole and Kearse are the "range rovers". Howard's a lot more like Brandon Whiting on crack.
Well I can't really disagree with you, but the basic point is that neither Cole nor Howard should be put at DT. They are both DEs by nature.
I stand by that comment though..if on an obvious passing play, we had to line one of them up at DT I'd prefer it to be Cole because Howard is by far the better end, and I think Cole's activity could present an unusual challenge to your average G or C.
But yeah, he's too small to play DT. I grant that.
we had to line one of them up at DT I'd prefer it to be Cole
cole cannot be lined up at dt in any scenario...unless the teams offensive formation is one that doesnt include a line...hes barely big enough to play de...he would get destroyed inside
as for howard after yesterday this just doesnt excite me at all
And putting Howard at DT is a total waste. So can we all agree that Cole and Howard don't belong at DT and just drop this subject?
If they wanted to do something like that, they could put Howard at end and use Cole as the new "Joker".
Or they could just rotate them.

It's possible, the Giants used Justin Tuck at DT last year a lot of times in obvious passing downs. Tuck isn't much bigger than Cole.
Yeah, but I was saying if they wanted all those pass-rushers in on one down liek someone was saying, they could put Cole in the Joker spot like they used to use Kalu.
Maybe the Eagles could just get a bona fide stud DT and we could stop this ludicrous discussion.
I know that's asking too much. But Jesus farging Christ!
Howard will be lined up inside occasionally on passing downs if he's signed. Just watch.
I can hardly wait.

Calm down, my ass. These fargers need to improve the team by spending some farging money to get the best available players. If you haven't noticed, the list of available "impact" players is dwindling rapidly.
There hasn't been anybody all over the Eagles in the last 24 hours more than me man.
But I'm just saying that just because he isn't signed this minute doesn't mean he won't be in a few hours.
But with our luck he'll leave town without a deal. The thing that pisses me off is they talked about how they wanted a DT so bad, but they are letting every one of them get signed.

That's more than fine with me. If they're not looking at Pickett or Bernard... Bunkley would be the next best thing. Should still give us a helluva boost in the pass rush. Garcia is good enough for me... I think he won't fall apart if we needed him to run the ship for a little while... obviously knows the WCO. I don't like it if they're looking to the draft for WR though. They need a reliable vet presence to help McNabb and Brown out now... don't need to be, at least exclusively... bringing another guy along now. Get Givens... get Moulds if he shakes loose... get a vet WR.
They will find a way to say they don't like Givens. I don't know what's not to like, but they'll say they don't like him.
Eric Moulds, they won't look at him with character problems.

Hello, hello, hello, hello, hello
i just find it amazing that the skins have the ability to be big players in free agency every single year, yet the eagles have signed 3 big names in 6+ years. 1 definitely on his way out the door, 1 probably, and 1 wouldn't matter if he was here anyway. they consistently find a way to be under the cap every single year, yet consistently find a way to be just under the goal of a superbowl win. what the farg are they thinking? if their going nuts listening to fans bitching, then do something about it. why the farg would they think their cheap way of doing shtein is gettin er done? 6-10 and doing nothing but losing talent. bye TO, bye runyan, bye lewis, bye dawkins. they don't exactly light it up in the draft every year.. farging sign someone, yesterday. not injury prune 1 or 2 year fixes just so they can say they did something. i'm trying not to jump off the cliff because they haven't done anything yet, but shtein, by the time they do get around to it, whats going to be left?

I agree. The Eagles always talk about how they aren't in love with all these free agents. Why do you have to be totally enamored with a player to sign him? Why can't you sign a player that you sort of like? They have PLENTY of money to do it. It's not like they are strapped and have to be picky.
Yet we go 0-6 in the division, and instead of us trying to catch up to the division, they are getting even better, and we are playing it like we went 6-0 in the division last year.
The Eagles must truly believe that McNabb's injury cost them a Superbowl appearance or they wouldn't be this passive.

That is true but I don't see anyone wheeling a cart full of cash Peterson's way yet. I wonder if the Poston's have set his value too high & teams are waiting?
You're probably right...
The Poston's always ask for too much early on. And when they don't get it, they make shtein up and say there are missing bonus clauses in the contract and try to get it from an arbitrator ala Arrington in DC.

Speaking of big-names that I'm not hearing about, why aren't we hearing about Rocky Bernard from anyone? We've seen about 4-5 DT's go by now & no mention of his name anywhere.
He's visiting with the Giants tomorrow.

I think he's one of the guys who overpriced themselves. He is in the class of Runyan, Woodson, Peterson and others. I think they expected a windfall of cash but no one is calling.
Or perhaps scouts and personnel guys think his one good season doesn't = his asking price.

Just as many people expected, the Eagles' first significant move of the free-agent season was signing a player away from the New Orleans Saints.
No, they didn't get center LeCharles Bentley, but a league source said that veteran defensive end Darren Howard agreed to a six-year deal with the Eagles late last night after spending the day in Philadelphia.
Details, other than the length of the contract, were not immediately available.
Gary Wichard, the agent for Howard, would not confirm the agreement but said he was working on a deal with the team.
Howard, who spent the day with head coach Andy Reid, defensive coordinator Jim Johnson and new defensive line coach Pete Jenkins, was impressed by what he saw and heard during his visit.
"I like the situation," the veteran defensive end said. "I like the organization, I like the people and the facilities are outstanding."
23 seconds shy, babe. :-*

S'all good. I just hope this time its true!
I hear that.
Do you think there will be some type of roster bonus in there, if true? 6 years seems a lot for a 29 year old. For the Eagles way of doing things, specifically.
6 years is for the SB proration purposes.
Banner will set it up good, I'm sure.

Good shtein... :yay
That's a nice signing, congratulations. I agree with PP54, he'll probably never see that 6th year. The signing bonus will be spread over the first 5, then that 6th year will probably be a nice big base salary that will never leave Lurie's wallet.
I'm glad for you Eagles fans to finally have something noteworthy happen. All we've done is resign a 2nd round waste, sign a Charlie Weis lookalike for the OL whose name I can't remember yet, watch a kicker we could've used walk away to sign elsewhere, and talk to a fashion model/OLB who we haven't signed.
If I lived for this stuff like some people do, I'd be bored to tears at this point. I'm pretty close as it is. (http://community.the-underdogs.org/smiley/misc/sleeping.gif)

So...will Kearse go back to #90 now?

Free agent defensive end Darren Howard agreed to a six-year, $30.5 million deal Sunday night with the Philadelphia Eagles. Included in the deal was a $9.5 million signing bonus and a $1 million roster bonus, topping guarantees offered by his team of six years, the New Orleans Saints.
Sweet. :yay
So what year do you think they put that roster bonus in?
This year. The Eagles do that a lot.
He'll get 10.5 up front but 9.5 of it will be prorated
How many of those years do you think he'll be wearing green?
I find it hard to believe all 6 years.
He's 29

So. that means if they cut him with one year to go, they'll have a year of dead money? SBs can only be prorated for 5 years.
Well, the SB propration would end after 5 years, right? So the SB would be off the books after Year 5. The only money left on the books in Year 6 would be his base salary. And if cut they wouldn't owe anything.
Something interesting.

It's looking like a possibility, and I can't say I'm excited about it. I feel the same way I felt about it when he first started going off in SF. The guy's a hell of a player, but a royal pain in the butt. I didn't visit your forum then, but I was one of the doomsayers saying wait and see.
I'll always root for the team, and it wouldn't be the first time we've had a player I didn't care for. Deion "Perpetual Turf Toe" Sanders was another and I got sick of all the crap Irvin got himself into. Hollywood Henderson was another PITA, but he actually paid for it when Landry dumped his butt..

I actually liked him since he stood on yall's star. My best friend is a Cowboys fan and it pissed him off so much that I became an Owens fan. So it'll be funny for me to call him when you guys sign him and trash talk him because he said he'd never root for Dallas if TO played there.

I'll second that. It's going to be so bad ass if Doogs comes back strong and hungry. Cole, Kearse, Howard and Doogs at the ends, Patterson, Walker, Rayburn and Bunkley as the tackles. That's a pretty farging serious D Line right there.
I Clould play some "Pro-Bowl" caliber LB behind that group.

Eagles spent the money to address a need. Thats all I ask. :yay
QuoteThe Saints had franchised Howard the past couple of years to try to keep him with the team on one-year deals but decided to let him hit the free agency market. The Eagles called him as free agency began and enticed him by offering $4 million a year and $7 million to sign.
After he decided to visit Philadelphia on Sunday, Howard received a better offer and more up front and wasted no time in agreeing to the deal.
I like that strategy. Offer a reasonable but low amount over the phone, get him to come into town, then blow him away by upping the offer significantly. Very nice.
P.S. $10.5 million up front, $30.5 million over 6 years is almost exactly what Randle El got from the Skins. I'll take Howard any day of the week, and especially on Sunday.

bentley would'be been nice but a pass rushing d lineman was this team's biggest need....good move.
eh well see how this works out but to me its not that exciting...howards will be 30 before the end of the season and is clearly at the downward point of his career...whereas a bently or randal el are young and have their best years ahead of him...howard even when fully healthy last year was terrible
im hoping a change of scenery will do him wonders as he hated it in new orleans and wasnt putting forth his best effort because of that
So when they don't sign older players they get ripped.

I wasn't really saying you, even though you don't seem enthused at all. But I listed to some of WIP this morning and people were blasting the signing.
I don't understand it.
He's a good DE. And his name isn't ND Kalu. That is a good move.
Not to mention...there was a TON of talk about him the last two years in the offseason and at the trading deadline by Eagles fans.
its an upgrade no doubt...youd have to be an idiot to rip the move but i think that is bently backlash more than howard hate...give it some time and people will come aorund more on the howard move...i mean they went from a 26 yr old who is the best player in the nfl at his position to a guy who will be 30 this year and is coming off by far his worst season in the league
i also dont see how you rip the skins for paying randal el but call the howard move a great one...the skins got what they believe was the best player available at a need position and the eagles did as well

This was one of the signings I wanted going into the offseason (other than the pipe dream of Abraham)... I felt he was the best DE option out there for us. This guy can still get to the QB from the outside... especially with the almost exclusive single man blocking he'll see opposite Kearse. Great 1st step. Now either add a vet DT in Bernard/Pickett or draft Bunkley (or both) and we've got a pretty mean D-line.
Love it. :yay

Because I don't think Randle El will be worth a shtein. Oh, he'll continue to do what he did in PIT - the reverses, trickery and some catches. But I don't feel that he was worth what he got and was asking for. He parlayed a weak draft class and free agent class into big bucks. Good for him. But we'll see.
Randle El hearts the new CBA.

Randle El was saying before FA that he wanted to go to a team where he would be the No.2--the Bears offered him that chance, but he turned down a 6 year, 18M contract from his hometown team. Unless the Skins cut David Patten, he'll BE NO BETTER THAN A No.4 and a punt returner. I would say the move was good IF THEY HADN'T GIVEN UP TWO PICKS TO TRADE FOR BRANDON LLOYD. That's why to me, the signing makes no sense. To me, you don't spend 4.7M per year on a punt returner, possible No.4 WR.
Unless the Skins cut David Patten, he'll BE NO BETTER THAN A No.4 and a punt returner
wrong...theyve already penciled him in as the #2 guy...patten might even be released

Lloyd's also getting about $10 mill in guarantees and $5.5m per year... to be their slot receiver?
I fell pretty good about that move. Solid signing, and there wasn't anything better to be had on the market, really. I'm still not thrilled about the Bentley thing, but he would have been a very nice to have...lacking him isn't a season-breaker. That DE rotation now has the potential to be very, very solid.
Good signing. Time to get a DT, I'm hoping for Pickett over a draft pick at this point. Also, I think Schobel at TE will be fine.
kearse howard cole mcdougle
not a bad de rotation. lets just hope jevon decides to earn his paycheck this year.
Lloyd's also getting about $10 mill in guarantees and $5.5m per year... to be their slot receiver?
i think randel el will probably be in the slot tho that hasnt been fully determined...but he will clearly be their second option..supposedly with the new offense that is in place they are going to be running a ton of three wide receiver sets this year with all three of those guys being moved around in different spots
Yeah, cause we know how well Saunders was able to feature 3 different receivers in Kansas City. Ha.
i agree the lloyd move is at best curious...lloyd just isnt that good which is why i believe he is the #3 guy...but the way i understand it is that all three will be interchangable parts...patten isnt even in the mix
Lloyd is a better receiver than Randle El. Lloyd was the only bright spot on an otherwise dismal Niners offense. I just find it hard to see Randle El being a higher priority on offense. I mean, Lloyd had almost as many TD's last year (5) as Randle El's had his entire career (7).

lloyd is not even close to as good as randal el...lloyd is all style and no substance...hes had numbers last year because the 49ers were so bad not because hes any good
watch randal el when he gets more opportunities this season than he has his whole career combined...hes not a number one guy but hes a playmaker who is going to have real nice numbers and really help the skins as their wr's outside of moss were pathetic

At least we know this time that if Walker is traded somewhere else, he's actually staying there. There is no ambiguity as to whether or not Walker should be a free agent. He's not. Well, the good news is the Eagles are rife with DT's that they're looking to upgrade/replace. Hell, I'd trade them Darwin Walker and a 3rd for Javon Walker. Hell, I'd even throw in Walker, Texas Ranger and one of these:

Assuming the reports are true that the Eagles are giving Howard $9.5m as a signing bonus and only $1m as a roster bonus, this means that his cap hit for 2006 will be under $3.5m.
You'd think if the Eagles weren't planning on using their cap space, they would have thrown more of his signing bonus in "roster" bonus territory.

watch randal el when he gets more opportunities this season than he has his whole career combined...hes not a number one guy but hes a playmaker who is going to have real nice numbers and really help the skins as their wr's outside of moss were pathetic
Nothing in there other than your opinion.

I will report if Darren Howard says anything remotely remarkable or outside of standard "glad to be here" stuff.

Nickel situations, obvious passing downs... when Cole needs to see the field.

Last I heard about McDougle, he had lost a lot of weight and the team isn't expecting him to be a major contributor anymore. If he returns to anything close to what was expected of him, it'd be a bonus...

Too bad he never amounted to that even when he was healthy...
I think they should draft a DE early day two, McDougal and Thomas should not be counted on. It might not be poplular on this board, but I think they need to stockpile DEs in case Kearse has another season similar to last.

Kearse by default won't have a season like last year. He was about putrid and he can be.
kearse had better stats last year than two years ago...time to realize kearse is what he is...hes not the 'phreak' coming off the edge that he was his first few years in the nfl
If Kearse goes the first month wthout a sack I want him moved to LB.
Kearse to SAM, Cole and Howard start at DE... HOLLA!
Could it be any worse then Dhani, Kalu, and Kearse at those positions?

I agree with this. If these two guys can get pressure from both ends, it opnly helps the coverage and the sack stats for both.
Kearse - Howard. That seems to be a decent tandem to me.
If we could draft Bunkley we'd have one hell of a defensive line on paper.
LDE Kearse
DT Patterson
DT Bunkley
RDE Howard
With Cole spelling both sides, Walker and Rayburn coming in when the starting DTs need rest.
That'll be great, considering they'll be on the field 80% of the time.

Actually, 2 years ago, Kearse had 9.5 sacks and an interception. The year before that he had 2 sacks, he only played 4 games that season. As for Darren Howard, I'm not crazy about him, but let's see how well he does under Jim Johnson first. His stats weren't all that good besides the 3 years in which he registered 11, 8, and 11 sacks. The rest of the years were just mediocre.
yeah and then all we got left is the LBs and WR and RB.
I like the Howard signing. Defense is key this offseason.
I'm not saying I would because I wouldn't, but I'm curious as if anyone here would've rather have had Andre Carter than Howard.

Howard was the best available free agent DE, he's a better pass rusher and much better vs. the run than Carter. Only thing Carter has on him is a little bit of youth.
Only other DE out there that I would have taken over Howard is Abraham... and we all knew that wasn't happening so realistically speaking, Howard is who I wanted.
No, but Carter was on my list as a guy I would've liked. But he was 2nd or 3rd behind Howard.
FYI and FWIW... Apparently, Darren Howard's deal includes $10.5 million in total "guarantees", and he didn't get it all up-front. In fact, it could easily be a 3-year deal for $15 million with only $6 mill guaranteed in the first 3 years.
No link, and I can't tell you where I heard it, because then I'd have to kill you.
I'm curious. What makes it beneficial to use Darren Howard as a DT in nickel situations as opposed to using him as a DE?

Here is Rueben Frank's article in http://www.phillyburbs.com/sports
The contract includes a $3.5 million signing bonus, roster bonuses of $600,000 this year, $1 million each in 2009 and 2010 and $4 million in 2011 and base salaries of $1 million this year, $2 million in 2007 and 2009, $2.5 million in 2008, $3.5 million in 2010 and $4 million in 2011.
Howard will have cap figures of $2.183 million this year, $2.583 million next year, and then $3.083 million in 2008, $3.583 million in 2009, $5.083 million in 2010 and $8.583 million in 2011.
In reality, this is either a four-year deal worth $12.6 million or a five-year deal worth $17.1 million. Either way, it averages out to less than $3.5 million per year.

A Nickel situation is usually considered for passing downs. Since that's the case, you want your best pass rushers on the field, which would be Kearse, Cole and Howard. By sliding Howard inside (and because he has the ability to do so), you can get another DE on the field without sacrificing pass rush. Your d-line is built more for speed in that sitaution than power.

Here's why:
Howard is excellent at pass rushing from the DT position. His size allows him to use a combination of speed and quickness to maneuver around interior lineman. However, he is not big enough to stand up against the run at DT.
So, if the Eagles consider him, Kearse, Cole, and Patterson to be their 4 best pass rushing linemen, isn't it nice that they can all be on the same field during key passing downs?
