Title: Owens & Rosenhaus To Meet With Eagles Brass
Post by: PhillyPhreak54 on August 01, 2005, 04:28:23 AM
QuoteOwens, Eagles' brass may meet

By Bob Brookover
Inquirer Staff Writer

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Terrell Owens and Drew Rosenhaus probably realize by now that they are not going to get any more money from the Eagles.

Sources close to Owens said yesterday that the wide receiver and his agent still want a meeting with the team, however. One source close to the situation said the two plan to talk with coach Andy Reid and team president Joe Banner, possibly as soon as tomorrow.

Owens and the remainder of the Eagles' veterans are expected to be checked in at Lehigh University by 5 p.m. today. All indications remain that Owens will report on time, although one source close to him said he has spent a lot of time recently with his ailing grandmother, Alice Black, who suffers from Alzheimer's disease and lives in Alabama.

It is not known whether Owens will talk to reporters today. The Eagles have not scheduled any media sessions for him. A year ago, he talked once a week during training camp and the regular season.

A source close to Owens said the receiver feels as if he has been disrespected by the Eagles and wants to clear the air before he joins his teammates at camp.

A team source did not dismiss the possibility of the Eagles meeting with Owens and Rosenhaus. In fact, one team source said Reid wants to have a meeting with his unhappy receiver, who spent much of the off-season trying to get the Eagles to rework the seven-year contract he signed before last season.

Another team source said it is standard procedure for the Eagles to meet with a player and his agent when the player returns to the team after a contract dispute. The source added that neither Owens nor Rosenhaus had requested a meeting as of late yesterday afternoon.

The same source made it clear over the weekend that the Eagles will not make any new deal with Owens,
who will be paid $3.5 million this season if he cashes in on what are considered to be easily earned incentives.

The last player to have a clear-the-air meeting with the Eagles after a contract dispute was running back Duce Staley, who staged a 26-day holdout from training camp in 2003 and left the team as a free agent the next year.

Derrick Harrison, the agent who represents Staley, believes it's imperative that quarreling sides meet at the end of a long contract dispute even if the issue remains unresolved.

"That's pretty much what you have to do," he said from his home in South Carolina. "After all the things that have been said and written about, you need that little opportunity to sit down and put it all behind you."

Harrison said Staley benefited from his meeting with Reid in 2003.

"Obviously, I think there are a lot of reasons and variables that affect the way a player thinks when he holds out, and teams have reasons for the decisions they make," Harrison said. "Oftentimes, those two things are not consistent with each other, but you have to be professional and understand the business aspect of things.

"When you sit down and meet at the end of it, both sides get to make their points, and then you have to get on the same page, which is trying to win a title for your team."

Although Staley's situation lingered deep into training camp, it did not become nearly as messy or as personal as the disagreement between Owens and the Eagles.

Staley never publicly insulted quarterback Donovan McNabb, and he didn't receive nearly as much national exposure as Owens and Rosenhaus have over the last four months.

There were, however, some nasty exchanges between the Eagles and Staley's camp, and Staley signed the next year with the Pittsburgh Steelers. But during the 2003 season, Staley remained a productive member of Reid's offense even in a reduced role. He also was extremely professional throughout the season and was looked upon as a leader by his teammates.

The Eagles hope for the same kind of thing from Owens. Though they will not guarantee anything, a patched-up relationship followed by another tremendous season from Owens could be the best avenue for the receiver to get the $8.28 million he would be due in 2006.

Stranger things have happened.

QuoteA source close to Owens said the receiver feels as if he has been disrespected by the Eagles and wants to clear the air before he joins his teammates at camp.

This tells me something right here. Obviously, in my opinion, the disrespect came when Banner came out and threw gas on the fire by saying that TO & Rosenhaus were two people who don't think in common sense terms.

So if TO wants to meet with them and clear the air before joining his teammates, then that is a good sign that he wants to play football and get down to business.

Agreed.  Banner blew it by throwing that comment out there.  The brass looked like heroes(kind of a strong word)through all this by just staying cool and just layin' low.  No need to throw that garbage out there.  Must be hard though having to bite your lip as Drew and TO just continue pop off on every talk show known to man.

Should be interesting come Tuesday when/if he comes out to the practice field.  Can't wait to see what the fans reaction will be.

Owens should feel like he was disrespected, because he has the intelligence of a 2x4, and it's very hard to respect the smarts of a piece of farging wood.

Again, I think there is no way Banner made that statement as a "flip" comment.  That was a calculated statement, this FO is very careful how they use the media.

They also have always (for their entire tenure) not wanted controversy and to keep things "in house". So Banner's comments were COMPLETELY against the norm. If he was supposed to be careful in how he proceeded with his comments, he would not have said what he said which only acted as fuel to the fire.

Amen to that. Went to a wedding this weekend and at the brunch the next day they had the the crispiest and most delicousest bacon I've had in months. I ate so much of it I felt sick and was belching up salty pork for the rest of the day. The ladyfriend was not impressed. I have no regrets.

Let me spin this another way.  What if the FO WANTED Drew/TO to keep talking because they felt that every time they opened their mouths they shovelled more dirt on top of themselves.  Then Banner's comments would be explainable.  I cannot believe he made that type of comment offhand.  But, Banner is the ONLY one in the FO that could have made that comment and have it be fixable.  i think there must have been a decision made to let Banner be the lightning rod if there needed to be one.  Anyway, food for thought.  Let's just get everyone in and get it started!

Rosenhaus is making an ass out of himself already:

QuoteTerrell Owens has arrived in Philadelphia with agent Drew Rosenhaus and is expected to be at Eagles training camp by 7 p.m. tonight for a team meeting.

Rosenhaus spoke briefly with NBC 10's John Clark at Philadelphia International Airport on Monday morning and we will have those comments on NBC 10 News starting at 4 p.m.

In parts of the video we saw in the NBC 10 newsroom, Owens and Rosenhaus weren't directly looking at each other when they shook hands after arriving on separate flights, and didn't interact in public.

Here is part of the interview between Rosenhaus and Clark, which Owens didn't participate in.

Clark: Eagles fans just want to know, are you here to go up to camp with T.O.?

Rosenhaus: I'm here to visit with Terrell and try to figure out what we are going to do next.

Clark: Do you think you are going to have a productive meeting with the Eagles tomorrow?

Rosenhaus: Anytime you have a chance to talk to Joe Banner and Andy Reid, it's got a chance to be positive. What we get accomplished, I don't know, but I'm happy to have the opportunity to visit with them.

Clark: Is TO going to stay in camp if he doesn't get what he wants?

Rosenhaus: I don't know yet John. Right now we're taking it one day at a time, one minute at a time.

The exchange confirms several media reports have indicated Owens and Rosenhaus wanted a direct meeting with Eagles head coach Andy Reid and team president Joe Banner, as soon as possible.

Rosenhaus is coming off a big victory on Sunday, getting a long-term contract for another client, the Cardinals' Anquan Boldin.

Sure, Drew...he's going to come into training camp, work out and train his ass off in that heat, and then NOT stay to play in the games where he'd get paid.  ::)

CSN said that TO went and checked in at his room and then came back out and got in his truck and left again. They don't know where he is going.

Rosenhaus said that TO's mindset is to play football. And he also said that TO has made up his mind that he wanted to come in and play ball.

He was back for the meeting at 7pm. Probably ran to the store for some Right Guard.

QuoteT.O. makes dramatic entrance to camp

By Marc Narducci
INQUIRER STAFF WRITER

The long-awaited Terrell Owens sighting came at 6:05 Monday evening about 55 minutes before the Eagles' deadline for veterans to report to training camp at Lehigh University.

Walking slowly from his Chevrolet truck, Owens moved toward the Eagles dormitories while a frenzied media followed his every step.

The only time he stopped was to hug teammate Brian Dawkins, but after that he continued marching to his own beat while wearing combat garb.

Asked questions faster than he runs the 40-yard dash, Owens didn't blink, kept his headsets on and walked in silence, never acknowledging reporters.

Owens really didn't care that most reporters were camped out for more than four hours waiting his arrival. By 7 p.m., when the Eagles held a meeting with the full squad, the long tumultuous off-season for Owens was officially concluded.

Owens came with his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, and the chances that both of them would remain silent in one setting were pretty slim. Rosenhaus addressed certain issues, basically saying that Owens is here to play football and that the agent would do the negotiating.

The agent added that he would be talking on Tuesday with Eagles coach Andy Reid and team president Joe Banner. "Right now the mindset is that Terrell Owens is here to play football and help the Eagles win a championship," Rosenhaus said.

All afternoon, as the Eagles kept strolling into their preseason quarters. And as each Eagle would enter the dorm, a swarm of reporters would descend on them. And the topic of conversation was a familiar one – T.O. To a man, the Eagles insisted that the prior antics of Owens, which included criticizing quarterback Donovan McNabb, and discussing how unhappy he would be if he didn't get his contract renegotiated, wouldn't pull this team apart.

"When that thing is kicked off when we play Atlanta, all that stuff will be ironed out," said Dawkins, one of the true teams leaders. "However way it will be ironed out, it will be ironed out and we will be rolling."

Eagles linebacker Jeremiah Trotter, who fled the team angrily over a contract dispute to spend to miserable seasons in Washington only to return last year, insists the entire Owens situation won't be a distraction.

"It won't affect us at all," Trotter said. "Me and T.O. are pretty close and we talk all the time and after going through similar situation, I have been there. I can relate to what he is going through and I talk to him and let him know this is a tough business and this is how it goes."

How it plays out will be a much more interesting story.

The bolded comment is why I hate the media sometimes...WHO CARES THAT YOU SAT ON YOUR ASSES FOR 4 HOURS?!?! And why should TO care?

What happened to reporting "just the facts, ma'am"? Why do they editorialize the articles? Yo Narducci...you aren't a columnist, dope. STFU and sit on your ass some more and get paid for doing it.

From Spuds:

QuoteFirst, the Owens story. Media camped out in front of team's dormitory for hours and hours and hours on Monday. It was comical and ridiculous and one long-time writer said to me, "This is the lowlight of my career."

QuoteEvery time a car pulled into the parking lot, the media cranked their necks and ran over to the general location ... just in case it was Owens. Inevitably, it was not, and the media slumped their way back to their seats in the shade waiting for the next false alarm.

Some of the writers and TV guys and producers and radio people played catch with a tennis ball. Some read. Some slumped over, dejected at the horribly boring part of the job.

At around 6:02, Owens turned into the parking lot and the race was on. Hundreds of men -- most of them in not-very-good shape -- trundled toward the car to crowd Owens.

T.O. got out of his car wearing a military fatigue-designed hat with a No. 4 on it, a camouflouge shirt (What, he didn't want anybody to see him?), sunglasses on and headphones drowning away the outside world.

The media walked and talked and bumped into somebody's car, setting off the alarm, and then asked him a question or two as he walked to the dorm -- he didn't answer -- and then circled back and surrounded agent Drew Rosenhaus to talk to him. Rosenhaus, of course, talked.

It's ironic, because usually to that type of thing you tell them to get a life, but that is their job so you can't really say that. I guess the job of a reporter is to be annoying, care about insignificant things, and have no life, but get paid for it.

QuoteAgent: T.O. at camp to stay

Inquirer Staff Report

Agent Drew Rosenhaus said this morning that Eagles wide receiver Terrell Owens will remain in camp no matter what happens in contract negotiations.

In an interview on ESPN's Cold Pizza morning show, Rosenhaus said, "No, he will not be leaving camp. He is here for good."

Rosenhaus is expected to meet with Eagles president Joe Banner sometime today.

"In an ideal world, we set up a framework to set up a new contract," Rosenhaus said. "Hopefully, we create a dialog and head in the right direction."

In the past couple of days, Rosenhaus has worked out contracts for two of his clients, Antoine Boldin of the Cardinals and xxxx McKenzie of the Saints.

"I promise we will do that here as well," Rosenhaus said.

On Cold Pizza....LOL...Skippy Clueless must have been crying when he found out TO wasn't going to leave camp.  :-D

Sounds like TO may have had a little conversation with Drew to let him know who was driving this bus. Rosenhaus' comments are much softer this morning, looking for a "framework to set up a new contract", rather than getting a new contract. If they want to discuss rainbows and unicorns for the 2006 season, I'm sure the Eagles FO will placate them to get Rosenhaus on the next plane out of the ABE airport...

He seems to be spinning defeat, unless I'm reading this incorrectly.

It's called LVI airport nowadays...

if they both werent such a-holes i would almost feel bad for them at this point

I think its more that TO realized the advice he was given sucked ass and decided to do it his way...go to camp as he promised he'd do last week...even with Rosenhaus spewing all over the place that it wasn't a given that he'd show.

Who the hell is Antoine Boldin and xxxx McKenzie? :-D

QuoteOffensive coordinator Brad Childress laughed off offseason broadcast reports Owens had a habit of falling asleep in meetings last year.

"I don't know where those reports came from because he has always been a professional when he has been around us," Childress said. "Those guys are in there for six months. Do their eyes get heavy? All of them, to a man. So, I'm not going to single out that guy and say that he was narcoleptic."

Interesting comments from Hugh. I hope TO shows that he's ready to coexist and play some football and not be a whiner.

And the sleeping comments were blown out of proportion by the media. The Training Camp edition of The Sporting News had these little features for each team where they asked one player a few questions like who sleeps in meetings, who stinks and who their roomates are...a ton of guys said they slept in meetings.

Yeah, I believe that's a spin of defeat from Rosenhaus right there. All he proably got out of Joe and Andy is "If TO goes out and has a year like he had last year, we'd definitely be interested in retaining him beyond 2005."

Maybe they even suggested they'd consider restructuring the remaining years and 2006 roster bonus in a way that would benefit both sides AFTER this season...but, the real message was "You're not getting another nickel for 2005...so, beat it."

It honestly was just a load of crap from SalPal.

The one example I remember him using was a stretch of Trotter's (I believe it was Trotter's) statement about having to be "man enough" to get over TO's comments.  Sally tried to slant this in saying that Trotter was in TO's camp, and somehow against McNabb.

That was the only specific example I can remember him using in PTI.  He said that the camp was "definitely divided," and that the team was "trying to paper it over."

And of course the media, because he's not talking...writes something like this (http://www.philly.com/mld/philly/sports/12287662.htm)

QuoteOwens is not a friendly camper
By Ashley McGeachy Fox
Inquirer Staff Writer

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - While the other Eagles veterans joked on the sideline yesterday during a special-teams drill at the end of practice, Terrell Owens knelt away from the fray, quiet and alone. Apparently, he wanted to stay that way.

But the jovial Hugh Douglas, a vocal team leader, approached Owens, essentially extending his hand to the man who has caused such a stir with his contract demands. Owens hardly looked at the defensive end as he got up and walked away, leaving the brushed-off Douglas less than happy.

"I was just trying to be nice," Douglas said later, after Jeremiah Trotter calmed him down, told him to give Owens some time, and promised to talk to the disgruntled wide receiver. "He's in a situation where he's trying to get something done, so he's probably a little upset. In a situation like that, I think the best thing to do is give him some space and let him work it out."

Despite cordial statements after a brief meeting with team officials, things between Owens and the Eagles are far from nice and, given the club's repeated stance that it will not renegotiate Owens' contract, they might not improve for some time.

Owens and his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, briefly met with coach Andy Reid and team president Joe Banner yesterday afternoon at Lehigh University. According to a team source, Owens hardly spoke.

"We had an opportunity to say some things," Rosenhaus said afterward. "They had an opportunity to say some things. One thing I did commit was we are going to keep everything quiet. We're happy that we had the opportunity to visit.

"You know, I'm going to go home and let Terrell focus on football. We'll stay in touch with the team... . It's always good when you're talking. It's always good to meet, and all the key principals were involved."

Said Banner: "Our position is that we understand his feelings and are glad that he is here. We are glad he is committed to focusing on football, and trying to have a good year. Our position has always been that he has a contract, and he needs to honor it, and that continues to be our position... . But I don't think it would be fair to say that T.O. left... frustrated."

As the players filed out of the locker room onto the practice field, they were greeted by a bevy of cameras and reporters, waiting to see Owens. When Donovan McNabb walked by, he mimicked a reporter, saying in a deep voice, "Here's Donovan with the veterans, and look who's coming."

Sure enough, there was Owens, grabbing a last drink before the training-camp session. Wearing white tights, black shorts, and a green No. 81 jersey, Owens jogged onto the field carrying his helmet in his right hand. He played catch with receiver Todd Pinkston.

Joining the offense, Owens caught several passes from McNabb, including one deep ball. He was on the closing end of a double reverse. He ran in motion, and from the slot, and from out wide.

In a seven-on-seven drill, Owens dropped a ball over the middle as he was defended by Sheldon Brown, and twice McNabb overthrew him deep, including once when Owens was covered by three defensive backs. Owens caught several other passes from McNabb.

Owens talked to team trainer Rick Burkholder but rarely, if ever, spoke to his teammates, including the quarterback. After watching Owens sprint through a double reverse, Trotter called out: "I see you running, T.O. I see you, 81."

"I thought he looked good, real good," Reid said. "He had the one drop out there, but he had a couple of nice grabs, and looked fast and strong and everything else."

Today, Owens and the rest of the Eagles will put on the pads, practicing before what should be a raucous crowd. The only fan reaction to Owens yesterday was from a passing car. The occupant shouted, "T.O.! T.O.!"

Maybe today Owens will talk. He didn't yesterday, although Rosenhaus promised that when Owens "feels comfortable, he definitely will."

After practice, Owens left the training facility, walked to his massive green Chevrolet pickup truck, and grabbed a basketball. He headed for a hoop near the parking lot. Wearing monster headphones and a white tank top that showed off his ripped torso, Owens took 74 shots, going 7 for 9 from three-point range and 41 for 65 from the foul line. That wasn't a great free-throw percentage, but it was better than Shaquille O'Neal's .531 career percentage.

O'Neal, by the way, signed a five-year, $100 million contract yesterday.
wtf does this have to do with ANYTHING?  :boom

T.O. didn't get anything, other than a carrot. If he performs to the level he did last season, the Eagles will consider paying him the nearly $8.2 million his contract calls for in 2006, a team source said. By asking for a new contract, it is clear that Owens doubts he will ever see that money, since NFL contracts are not guaranteed.

Yesterday, Owens wasn't the only player looking for a new deal. While stretching after practice, Douglas asked for one.

"Where's Joe [Banner]?" Douglas said to no one in particular. "I want to renegotiate for a package of Milk Duds and a box of crackers. And if I don't get it, I'm leaving camp."

Owens isn't leaving. But when he starts talking remains to be seen.
(I think we all know that's the real issue here.  ::) )

The video I saw on CSN showing the media circled around him while he shot hoops was fargin excellent! They said on PE.com that the media stood around him--presumably hoping for a sound-bite--and were retrieving his shots, and all he'd say was a polite "Appreciate it" as they returned the ball to him.     :-D

They said on PE.com that the media stood around him--presumably hoping for a sound-bite--and were retrieving his shots, and all he'd say was a polite "Appreciate it" as they returned the ball to him.     :-D

I saw that article too (the "appreciate it" article) and was laughing too. Classic. The media camped out there for days and all they've gotten is a silent TO. They are all probably being screamed at by their bosses.  :-D

I made the error of turning on WIP (in the hopes that Angelo wasn't on) just now and he's basically telling people to boo TO when he comes out of the locker room.  ::)  Yeah, that'll help asswipe. I'm sure he'll be cheering Westbrook on just fine.

He's crying that TO hasn't talked to the media and is pouting around camp not talking like a little baby. So, if he talks to much, he's a selfish icehole, if he doesn't talk, to avoid further issues...he's a little baby?

He ran up the field to play to the fans....and he acknowledged them as he ran by and they cheered. You could hear some boos, but not as much.

And of course the media, because he's not talking...writes something like this

There once was another great player in this town who stopped talking to the media and let his on field performance do the talking, (Steve Carlton) forcing the media to after awhile just report the facts.

While that would be nice I don't think TO has the self control that Lefty had, and will eventually start yapping, hopefully about football and not money.

He's doing it because there is honestly nothing to say to the media. He said what he had to say to AR and Banner and I'm sure he's talked to his teammates (or will). Who cares what he says to the media. His actions right now are all I need to "hear" from him.

Why is it they incessantly report about a rift between McNabb and Owens, but Favre is far too profressional to allow bad blood between him and Walker?

Stephen A. Smith asked McNabb about the Favre/Walker thing, and McNabb essentially said it wasn't something he'd do, that he felt it was unprofessional to get involved in another teammates buisness.

the teasers they ran made it seem like Donovan said some shtein about Brett's mom.

McNabb was taped yesterday at camp for Screamin A Smith's show on ESPN. IN it, Screamin asks him what he thought of Favre's outspoken views on Walker and holding out and McNabb said that it was unprofession and unncessary. That if there is a contract dispute with another player, leave it up to THAT player and don't get involved in public. Privately, do what you need to do...talk to the player if you want...but to call people out in public is unprofessional.

Just saw this posted on the Eagles website....sorry if it was posted somewhere else...

QuoteBETHLEHEM, Pa.--The came, they saw, and he was silent. All week long, local and national media swarmed Bethlehem, running around the Lehigh University trying to get Terrell Owens to speak, And all week long, Owens remained stone-faced, silent to any question or comment.

Terrell Owens finally spoke
The silence broke on Wednesday, when Owens spoke exclusively with WPVI 6abc, the Eagles' new broadcast partner. Former Eagle Irving Fryar spoke with him:

T.O.: "I feel good, if it wasn't for my family. I had a talk with them before I got here. If it wasn't for them, I wouldn't be here. And God put me in the situation to go out here and still play the game, that's why I'm here."

Irving Fryar: "What did your family say?"

T.O.: "They said to stay strong throughout everything. They know it is not fair and we're honest about it."

Irving Fryar: "Everybody knows that the Eagles need T.O. to go back to the Super Bowl and to win the Super Bowl. Are you going to be able to play at your maximum capacity?"

T.O: "I'm here in camp and that's all I can say."

Also on the Eagles site was an updated translation for RJS.

Well, whether it truly matters or not, I'd like to see them get along. If the locker room has a negative air to it during the season, they will be less-inclined to want to give TO the roster bonus. That's still up in the air depending on what he does this season but we can't win a Bowl without TO.

It won't happen rjs. Reid won't let it, no matter what.

If anything, I'm worried about Westbrook and why he's being such an complete asshat right now. I'm not going to worry myself about someone who is IN camp and working out with the team like he's supposed to.

Whether some of you are being sarcastic or not, I didn't like the sounds of TO from that interview. He sounds like he's going to keep being a little whiny girl about all this. Just shut up and make things right with your QB and Hugh already. Because Donovan holds grudges and won't make things better himself.

Say nothing to the media. Talk to the people he is on the off with in person behind closed doors. There is no reason why him and McNabb shouldn't be talking, and I don't want to hear they are just going about business. That is a bunch of bologna. They were all lovey dovey on the sidelines last year and there is absolutely no reason why they shouldn't be this year. Friends get in fights all the time, and they make up. They are adults, they should be over this petty bickering by now and stop acting like a bunch of broken egos, and babies.

If I went up to camp this year I'd bring a tweezer, and after practice I'd go around the field and pick up the little nail shavings from TO biting his nails. Then I'd auction them off on ebay.

I just want to know how they missed TO & McNabb walking out together this morning? Or I guess that cramps their style in trying to create more shtein...

Brian Startare reported on WIP that in the afternoon practice TO was helping out the younger WRs. I had left by then, but he hasn't been the total loner that the TV is saying he's been.

Did you hear Andy on there with him?

Andy said that players don't have to get along and love each other. He said this "ain't the dating game, Howard". And then Eskin asks him to set up TO and McNabb on another date.

Reid said as long as they play ball, he doesn't care what goes on.

I think thats the only thing the fans and coaches care about. As long as they are productive together on the field who honestly cares. If their personalities clash thats fine. Some people just don't get along with others. Just be civilized toward one another, act professional, and put up points.

Title: Re: Owens & Rosenhaus To Meet With Eagles Brass
Post by: WEST is GOD on August 04, 2005, 11:50:49 PM
Howard should've asked him the perfect question and that is if he will chat it up with TO on the sidelines during the games. For example, if TO sees something that a corner is biting on, is he going to notify McNabb about it, or just be a baby.

Hopefully by then they are friends again though. I've been insulted by friends many times in my life, and every time I've gotten over it. Unless TO fargs McNabb's wife, they can be friends again, and by friends I don't mean going to movies. However, being roommates should be ok.

My favorite part of that story:

"Link: All about groin injuries"

My God, this is what we've come to...

Channel 10 is by far the most sensationalistic local news channel in Philadelphia, so I'm not surprised. For a few years there, I don't think they ran a single story that didn't have the lead-in/teaser line of "Stay tuned for a story that could save your life!"
