He's on the DL so he doesn't quite have the qualifying number of ABs, but I just noticed that Darin Ruf has a higher OPS than every player on the Phillies other than Realmuto.

ruf im really surprised about. everything about him read white stiff but he has certainly developed into a good hitter with defensive versatility. cant say this is a massive miss by the phillies....nobody wanted him when he washed out of here and he went to either japan or korea and found his swing. i was much higher on aaron altherr who is (googling) still in korea.

kingery is not klentak's worst move but hes up there. there is a dedicated segment of phillies twitter that blames everyone else but him for his wretched play and it drives me insane.

the argument for him is that 1) his swing was ruined by kapler/mallee who wanted him to launch angle and not be more level and line drive oriented (he also did a bunch of unsanctioned work on his own. 2) he played a bunch of different positions which affected his offense.

kapler/mallee certainly did not help. but the swing he used in spring 18 and his great 17 season in AA was the same one he used in 18 when he had a 61 ops+. in 2019 he had an OPS north of 1.000 on june 25. after that, he had a 224/289/401 slash. whose fault is that? perhaps the player, who the league figured out and he couldnt re-adjust.

we'll also have those first 3 months in 2019. like dom brown's monster first half in 2013, the stuff of legends.

there is def a coaching factor in there, perhaps a more competent franchise like the dodgers dont have this issue, but sometimes guys just arent good enough. it happens a lot to the phillies.

the playing multiple positions thing boils my blood. cody bellinger managed to master 1B and CF and also hit 100 bombs. but playing SS and 2B is too much for scotty kingery so therefore he poops his pants.

Best you can hope for is they get him down into the low minors and break the swing down and have him start all over.
