Zero hour, Michael. It's the end of the line. I'm the firstborn. I'm sick of playing second fiddle. I'm always third in line for everything. I'm tired of finishing fourth. Being the fifth wheel. There are six things I'm mad about, and I'm taking over.

im not sure how anyone can watch the nfl and not think the the refs are hideous...now to be fair they are hideous because the nfl rules and office tells them to be....pass interference in the nfl is the worst called part of the game in any sport....and not only are the calls horrid but they have the worst consequences for the calls....it would still be terrible but id be better with the excess of PI calls if they were 15 yards...or if there were different levels of pass intereference similar to fouls in the nba

the PI calls dont seem too different to me...the illegal contact is a different story. thats ridiculous.

im with you though, i want to see the PI calls get different levels. they should max be 15 yards. its silly when theres an iffy call and its 35 yards down the field and goes as a spot foul.

part of the reaction to the officiating, though, is simply twitter. 10 years ago if there was a bad call or even a questionably bad call, you sat on your couch and maybe said "oh thats bad." now theres a 24/7 constant twitter outrage machine that turns things that arent big deals into big deals. so people's perception of the officiating is manipulated by what they see on the internet.

the actual talent level of the refs is quite superior to what it was....what the nfl is asking them to enforce is a different story and open for criticism.

i dont think ive ever been on twitter during a football game so i dont know about that....but there clearly is a big problem with calls of any kind on the defense and specifically PI calls which include illegal contact...they are all the same to me

PI calls per game in 2009 - 5.94
PI calls per game in 2014 - 6.72

the number is actually down from where it was the previous years.

Illegal contact per game in 2009 - 2.88
Illegal contact per game in 2014 - 3.31

its possible the nfl chose to focus on this because the number was at 1.19 in 2013.

nobody thinks the reffing or enforcement of rules is perfect but 1 to 1.5 extra flags per game isnt the end of the world. but when your opinion is validated by 10000 other ones on twitter....it turns it into A BIG DEAL OMG SPORTS.

Of course social media plays a part in that. It plays a part in everything now and contributes to the massive overreactions on just about everything. However you're forgetting about sports radio. If the game was called as stupidly in 1993 as it is today then WIP would be afire with people bitching.

sports radio doesnt have time to focus on those minor narratives....it doesnt now. espn doesnt do it either. the game is the game and the game will always be the focus.

the ref whining is an game twitter outrage deal. the notion that the game is being called stupidly is a complete over exaggeration. its not perfect by any stretch...nothing is...but its not as bad as people make it out to be. thats where the twitter comes in. it makes things into bigger deals than they are, from sports and beyond.

we all hear about the arrests in the nfl but sometimes you come across a story like this that shows you there are players out there that get it.
