I don't understand how a team that has a top five payroll in its sport can be the worst to play for especially if you're an over the hill veteran who's played there for a decade.

That's just idiotic.

because the team is a joke

the (acting) president is a fossilized geezer. the gm is quite possibly the biggest combination of arrogance and stupidity in sports history. the talent is non existent up and down the organization. the owners are shady old people who, outside of john middleton, nobody even knows.

like seriously i follow the team and i couldnt tell who owns the team right now. middleton? a buck brother? on of claire bentz's kid? does giles have a piece? monty? THIS IS A CONCERN.

anyway its a throw away comment on a radio show in february, so it doesnt matter. but it aint that wrong.

Even if there is they'll just lowball the hell out of him.

They got billions with a B from Scamcast and they are slashing payroll and not spending anything on talent. It's sickening.

slashing payroll is what they should be doing...

they need to start over from scratch

first by massively investing in player development

I sort of agree with this, but they could have signed Scherzer or Lester, had Hamels/Scherz or Lester/Lee/Harang and a decent bullpen. Their bats are god awful but with 3 quality starters they'd compete. Really it's just money and tanking doesn't help so now they're back to their penny pinching days now that the gravy train has stopped.

the phillies where they stand right now signing scherzer to that deal would have been an absolute joke...shtein it probably ends up being a bad deal for the nats and they are a team that should be going all out right now for a ring

the phillies are probably the worst team in the majors...it would have been a travesty to add that kind of deal to their roster

My point is, how does it hurt? Maybe Lee bounces back and you have 3 very good starters. It's not like the NFL/NHL/NBA where we root for losses for draft picks. The stadium is going to be empty and penny pinching mode is going into full effect.

because youd have 200+ million dollar contract on the books for a zesty team

i dont know that id ever give that to a 30 year old pitcher but i def wouldnt do it if my team sucked and was already bloated with terrible deals

no way i wouldve wasted money on lester or scherzer. unless the pitching staff can hold opposing teams to a sub 2 era there's no chance with the line-up the phils have.

I agree with Igy on this one. There was no benefit of committing the millions it would take to get a Scherzer or Lester, even assuming they would have signed in Philly.

This team needs a hard reset, a complete teardown of what is still there, and start rebuilding from scratch. The money needs to be spent in scouting and developing talent.

Unfortunately, there's still the minor problem that Amaro is still in charge...
