Troy Vincent said he played with six gay players.

They didn't call Hank Fraley "Honey Buns" for nothing.

Seriously it seems a little odd that Vincent would have played with that many openly gay players (suggesting that it's rather common) without a single gay player's identity ever leaking out. Obviously it would have been a pretty big betrayal to out someone in the NFL, but the number of jerks in the NFL who would blab probably outweighs the number of gay players.

I'm 150% for Gay Marriage, I don't like that religious folks try to dictate societal rules and a gay couple deserves the exact same rights as non gay couples because they also pay taxes and contribute to society. But the whole Sams draft day act was lame. The crying is fine, kissing your boyfriend...fine. Smearing cake on his face and licking it off...really? I think of him more as an attention whore now than a courageous soul. Really he's more about being an activist than focusing on his football career, and ultimately that's why he'll be cut.

SD, I guess my reaction was a bit like yours. I was moved by Sam's overwhelming emotions and I actually liked that his boyfriend was there and that he kissed him repeatedly, instead of trying to hide or downplay the historical meaning of the draft pick.

The cake part, however, came several minutes after the phone call and was a separate piece of tape (and I don't believe it was live). There wasn't really any reason for ESPN to show it other than to try to generate controversy. I've never seen anything like that with straight couples during the draft, it was more of a wedding reception makeout session. Sam can obviously celebrate the pick any way he wants but I question ESPN's decision to broadcast the cake part.

I don't go as far as you do in reading into it that he's all about being an activist or attention whore, and that he'll be cut. It's very possible that he'll have a Tebow-like career, with people both overrating and underrating his career for reasons that have nothing to do with football, and with every aspect of his career blown way out of proportion by the media for the same reasons. But I'm not willing to go to the next step and say he's actively stoking that, because so far it just looks like he's a guy who wants to play football and lead his life openly.

I thought the cake was over the top too. I loved the raw emotion and the joy he shared with his boyfriend. That's genuine feelings and love.

I wasn't watching....what happened with the cake

and how was that guy ever your "buddy"....or had he kept that inside and unknown to you until today

I have friends with different views than my own.  Just because people don't agree with each other or don't always espouse politically correct opinions doesn't make them bad people, IGY.   He doesn't like watching gay guys making out on national television.  I don't give a shtein personally but I can understand and tolerate his mild intolerance.

to each his own but I cant befriend ignorance...if a friend of mine has a different view on the middle east than I do fine...but when it comes to homophobia or racism....human rights type shtein then farg those people...the guy literally was so disgusted he paid his bill and left??...totally his right....and I dont wish bad things on him...in fact I feel sorry for people like that....but I could never be friends with them

i didn't see the cake thing...but heres the thing...if you hate it because it was two gay people doing it then that's just stupid....if you thought it was cheesy or over the top the same way a straight players girlfriend or family and friends act when they are picked then fine

tim tebow ran across the jets practice field shirtless in the rain and no one seemed to flip out about it
i can take a phrase thats rarely heard...flip it....now its a daily word

igy gettin it done like warrick

Who are we to judge how this guy acts especially considering what he's been through?

The guy is a black, gay professional football player who's been subjected to intense scrutiny and outright hostility ever since he came out.  Gays in this country are ridiculed, harassed, discriminated against and treated as pariahs in this so-called "free" society.  They're accused of being child molesters, deviants and evil.  If they're going to be treated like that, I can't blame them for giving everyone a collective middle finger.

They're not asking for tolerance anymore.  They're demanding it and that's a great thing.   The ultimate irony of this is the game he plays is ultra-violent, yet no one seems to give a shtein about guys getting their brains beat out.  But two dudes making out on television... OH MY GOD THE HORROR!  THINK OF THE CHILDREN!!

Would he have flipped if the guy had proposed to his boyfriend while they were checking out the Empire State Building?

My favorite tweet about it said "it's ok for your child to hear about the player accused of rape, that's easy to explain, but 2 consensual adults in love ..."

The man. The myth. The legend.

absolutely agree....but making fun of two people feeding cake to each other after getting drafted is completely warranted...but not because they are gay...again didn't see it but it sounds ridiculously cheesy

i regularly laugh my ass off at all the doods who blubber after being picked

It's just as stupid and cheesy as when a bride & groom do it at their wedding.   But they don't typically receive nationwide condemnation or death threats either.  Seriously, I know this country is a sewer but times like this make me all the more depressed to live among such people.

PhillyPhreak54

Agreed on feeling the same way when living amongst people like that. The anonymity of the internet breeds cowardice and hatred and gives these bigots a voice.

In this day and age the United States should be at the forefront of accepting and understanding differences. However we are sorely lacking in that and it disgusts me.

All races and sexual preferences should be respected.
