Here it comes.  Top 7, 2 on, no outs for the Bucs.  Bums two run lead.  You do the math.

Has the ball that Chooch hit in the eighth landed yet?

Just wondering.

since i already deconstructed wins can saves be next?

just a question: was papelbon trying to give up a run there? so it counts as a save because he happened to have a 2-run lead that he had nothing to do with?

just a question.
Zero hour, Michael. It's the end of the line. I'm the firstborn. I'm sick of playing second fiddle. I'm always third in line for everything. I'm tired of finishing fourth. Being the fifth wheel. There are six things I'm mad about, and I'm taking over.

What? Why would he want to give up a run to get a save when a 2R lead is still a save?

You're losing it, Bill James.

PS - Carlos Ruiz is a goddamn pimp. He's hitting .361 with 10HR and playing great defense. His catch on Harrison's bunt attempt was beautiful.

PSS - The Phillies started a Vote For Chooch campaign...two days before voting ends (he's 800k behind that queer Yadier)

PSSS - There was another WAVE at the ballpark tonight. In the 8th inning of a close ballgame. DIE!

no.

what im saying is he gave up a run. that is bad. but he happened to have a 2 run lead, so the 1 run didnt cost him. but what if it was a 5-4 game? now its a blown save. so him giving up a run, i.e. doing something bad, does not cost him because he just happened to have a 2-run lead.

to me the saves stat isnt as bad as wins but its kind of iffy. sometimes theres a built-in safety system that the pitcher had nothing to do with. i like the +/- system. +1 for a good outing, -1 for a bad outing.

papelbon = +13 in big spots, +3 in non-big spots
basticho = +11 in big spots, +5 in non-big spots
savery = -1 in big spots, -1 in non-big spots

in a roundabout way, joe savery sucks.

as a frame of reference, joe nathan is a +16 in big spots and a +5 in others.

Standing in front of your house ready to open fire!?

MDS - and maybe Johnny Papsmear decided to be more aggressive in the zone knowing he had a 2R lead with no one on base rather than nibble and maybe walk a guy? Maybe one got away from him?

Why is Raul Valdes starting tomorrow??

Geowhizzer

According to the Phils' site, simply because they used both Lee and Hamels for the doubleheader.  Lot of good that did.

1. its possible, though its really farging stupid and over confident to think that way. if you have a 4 run lead i buy it. though he is a meathead baseball player so i wouldnt put it past him. basically i want you and everyone to rethink and question back of the baseball card stats. again i dont care what babip is but just think about things more critically.

2. they left themselves without a lot of options. they could bring kendrick on short rest, then use that kid from AAA on regular rest. they could use the zesty pitcher from AAA on regular rest or the really zesty kid from AA. all terrible options. so basically they are throwing in the towel on this game.
