i understand what youre saying but if it wasnt a first down they would have lost that TO

no they wouldnt have....you dont throw the red flag and say thats a first down....you throw the red flag and say you put the ball in the wrong place....now go and look where it should be....maybe it should be moved ahead of the first down marker or maybe it should be moved one inch short of it but please look and see where the ball should end up...and if it is determined that it is to be placed somewhere forward of where it was orginally spotted then you win the challenge

This was my interpretation of the rule also, but apparently that's incorrect.  I forget what game I was watching (non-Eagles game within the last month) and the same situation played out.  Coach challenged the spot as it was marked just short of a 1st down.....like a foot.  Refs reviewed the play and the commentators were talking about how even if the ball is moved forward, if it didn't go far enough for a 1st down then the coach would still lose the challenge.  The ball was moved forward but not far enough for a 1st and the coach lost his challenge.  Doesn't make any sense at all, but for whatever reason that seems to be the rule.

no one challenges for an inch, its not that black and white where its like they spotted the ball one centimeter incorrectly now let me throw the flag. otherwise you could challenge, and win, every single spot.

Zero hour, Michael. It's the end of the line. I'm the firstborn. I'm sick of playing second fiddle. I'm always third in line for everything. I'm tired of finishing fourth. Being the fifth wheel. There are six things I'm mad about, and I'm taking over.

if thats true it could be the dumbest rule ever...in other words the refs can be wrong but you still get charged a timeout...when it comes to first downs every inch matters even if you dont get it

I believe that technically you cannot really challenge the spot of the ball. You can only challenge whether a first down or touchdown has been achieved or not. [And now of course the touchdown issue has been moved to booth review.]

As a separate issue, the refs reserve the right to put the ball wherever they think it should be. So if they think it should be moved forward a foot and not get a first down, they can do that, but it doesn't impact whether you won the challenge or not.

spots are so arbitrary and are generally judgement calls...like PI or holding or something like that.

the rule as it is is fine.

It makes me angry and jealous to see the 49ers play.

Solid special teams
Hard hitting defense
Turnover minded
Efficient offense

Sigh.

they arent like PI or holding because you cant challenge those calls....if you wanna make it so that spots arent challengable then fine....but if you are allowed to challenege where the ball is placed on a particular play and if your challenge shows that the refs were wrong then you shouldnt be penalized...its silly

The spot of the ball can't be challenged. The coaches' challenge is to the spot of the ball in relation to a first down. Since the refs are fair, they'll move the ball if they got the initial spot wrong, but if the new placement doesn't garner a first down (nose of the ball is beyond the necessary line), the challenge is unsuccessful.

Burress back with the Steelers.  With the injuries in the WR corps, I guess they'll take a shot on anyone.
