lol what

so the cardinals were their kryptonite or something? that doesnt make any sense.

the cardinals were and are a terrible team. the phillies choked it away for a variety of reasons and might have done the same to the dbacks. if you need to make yourself feel better by saying they win the series if the cards arent in it then go for it. but they werent getting it done this year. plain and simple. no getting around it.

Zero hour, Michael. It's the end of the line. I'm the firstborn. I'm sick of playing second fiddle. I'm always third in line for everything. I'm tired of finishing fourth. Being the fifth wheel. There are six things I'm mad about, and I'm taking over.

Don Ho

The playoff performance was no surprise.  shtein we saw this coming all year and it was magnified (again) in the playoffs.  August/September was a pretty good indicator.  What's infuriating is Carpenter (ok, he's pretty damn good)/Lohse/Garcia/Edwin farging Jackson are going to the World Series.

The Cards were fighting for their lives to get into the playoffs and were the hottest team entering the playoffs. The Phillies were 6-3 against them this season. Aside from Lohse the Phils don't hit their pitching well. Just like the Giants were an inferior team to the Phils that shtein goes out the window once the postseason rolls around. It's not always the best team that wins it's the team that's playing best. Do you really think the Brewers would have beaten the Phillies in a 7 game series? No farging way.

phils had one series win in them this offseason no matter who they played....to suggest they were the best team but got a bad draw is insulting...you could see this coming from a mile away all year....zero bats pitching that could only regress once the playoffs started and no motivation = disaster

i do agree that st louis was the worst possible matchup for them and they werent getting their one series win against them...but if they had eeked by they were gonna get outhit by a lot against the brewers
i can take a phrase thats rarely heard...flip it....now its a daily word

i mean whatever you gotta do to make it better for yourself, go for it

fact is if they were playing pittsburgh, houston and san diego they wouldnt have won the world series

It makes me feel worse knowing that my team would be playing in the world series right now if they had tanked against the Braves. Maybe I'm missing your reverse jew logic.

MDS

how many ways can we saw this

it didnt matter who they played. they werent winning the world series. they werent good enough.

You are.  He exposed himself as a front running fraud.  All year long he was killing anyone who had the slightest negative comment about them and once they get bounced he suddenly feels like they weren't good enough to win.

Cards were the worst match up for them, much like San Fran was last year (who also got in on the last day if I'm not mistaken thanks to the Padres falling apart in Sept).  Had SD gotten in, Phils would have torn them apart.

Cards won the season series vs the Phils this year and the Giants last year.

The Phils won the season series vs every other team in the playoffs this year.  Does that guarantee they make it to the WS?  No.  But I honestly believe they would have taken out Arz/Mil/Atl.

The Phils had a fatal flaw - it's inconsistent offensive production.  Most of its best hitters (Rollins, Utley, Howard) are in their 30s and the latter two were either returning from (Utley) or fighting injuries (Howard), on top of being damned inconsistent in the first place.  This was a team that could score 5-7 runs easily - or get shut down multiple games in a row just as easily.

Halladay pitched a gem in game 5 - gave up a run in the first, then shut them down the rest of the way.  Lee got a 4-run lead and couldn't hold on.

St. Louis took the extra base, played aggressively smart baseball, and went on.  The Phils rested on their "We won 102 games" laurels, and went home.  The Cardinals may not have been the best team over 162, but they definitely were over the five game - particularly in the last two, when the Phils had a chance to close out the series.

This team will be in the hunt next year.  A top three of Halladay-Lee-Hamels guarantees that.  Unless they improve their offensve - both from baseball intelligence (know when to take a pitch) and talent (this team has had a huge drop off of power since last All-Star Break), their fatal flaw also guarantees that, come next World Series, they'll be watching it on TV like all of us.

Sgt PSN

Funny thing is that they "got smart" in Game 5 and started taking pitches but were too dumb to realize that Carpenter was throwing 1st pitch meat and then giving them next to nothing after that.

QB Eagles

The August Phils woulda won it all but the infield's arthritis kicked in and most of those guys were useless at the plate by October. The big hitters were mediocre at best, Polanco's offense was sub-Valdez, and Señor Octubre must not have seen any calendars because he hit more like what we expect from Señor Gluestick in LF.

MDS

lol @ getting angry about the 8th hitting catcher.

yall are searching for answers when there is nothing there. for the 2nd year in a row they simply didnt want it bad enough, on top having an aging slow team. they went in thinking it was their birth right to win the world series and got run.

they need to change some things up with the lineup...install some hungry young blood...but i dont see that going down
