Saw a stat about basticho about expecting him to regress to the man because his BABIP is ridiculous right now, but, while I don't expect him to be this crazy the rest of the year, I saw that the % of balls in play that are popups in the infield is a sick 35%.  Hard to have a good batting average against him with that.

Depends--sometimes I think it's useful, sometimes it isn't.  Looking at the distribution is helpful.  If a pitcher's ERA has gone up significantly and so has the BABIP against him, some people attribute it to luck/sample size, but if the line drive rate is going up as well, or a ground ball pitcher is throwing more fly balls than normal then the stat is flawed.

It's not necessarily that telling in a vacuum--things like ERA/WHIP/K:BB are WAY more important, but it's still useful to look at.

babip is a pretty understandable nerd stat. it just eliminates strikeouts and walks.

most saber stats are pretty terrible but this is one of the ones that clicks.

If he pitched for the Braves, he wouldn't have allowed any hits all year.

Stats are fine even the arcane ones.  The problem I have is with the dicks who swear by them while mocking conventional baseball facts, strategies & logic.

sabremetrics is not fine and that includes babip......babip didnt even exist 15 years ago and the game was exactly the same as it is now

babip and the like are for nerds who dont really like sports but want to be included in them
