Kentucky is more hillbilly than hick.  I think of the former as ignorant but generally good natured, generous, forgiving, and the latter as ignorant but generally petty, mean spirited, and close minded.

Ha! What's funny is that UNC's campus is in the middle of a veritable liberal mecca. Hippies and elitists abound. You'd be in heaven.

Most major colleges and universities tend to be fairly liberal and so do the populations of the local town surrounding them, so even though NC might be a conservative state, it's not surprising in the least that the RDU area would be more liberal than the rest of the state.   

BYU and Notre Dame would be pretty obvious exceptions though.

Intellectual life is by definition liberal.

Let me put it another way:  which place hosted more lynchings, enforced more Jim Crow laws, harbors more avowed racists?

North Carolina beat Kentucky out, I think.

Besides, Kentucky has bourbon.  And it's right next to Ohio, which was FREELAND to slaves. 

NC is just hateville.

North Carolina has more brothers and sisters in one county than Kentucky has in the entire state. Picking NC over Kentucky as some sort of racial statement is retarded beyond even being worth discussing.

North Carolina, especially in the western part of the state, is farging gorgeous and the people are as friendly as can be.  And the Outer Banks are spectacular too.

i dont know if the amount of black people has much to do with it...mississippi has lots of blacks and it doesnt get much more racist than there and texas has tons of blacks and is as conservative as you can get

that said i cant imagine nc being more racist or conservative than kentucky...altho i will say for the last three years ive gone to nags head and heard like 5-10 n bombs dropped in bars in the week i stay there which is more than i hear the rest of the year combined in all the places i go...me and my girl are just dumbfounded by it
