last night is also a perfect example of why a playoff would hurt cfb...game would have meant virtually nothing with a playoff in tact...without it it was basically a playoff game

Right, so with the system as it is, instead now Va Tech (and probably Boise) will just end up playing in a meaningless game on Jan 1 or a few days after.

probably is the key word

thing is we dont know whats gonna happen because there isnt a playoff...and thats why an entire three month regular season contains so many epic games...theres like four of them this weekend alone

please don't start up again with the playoff nonsense.

i know that's what you're after here, but please don't.

it's such a tired argument that you and the south texas version of jimmy olson get into and it clutters page after page of this thread.

i'd love to discuss college football.  i wouldn't like to watch you and mds fellate each other for hours arguing over something you've argued over repeatedly in the past.

theres a war and peace sized list of things i dont want to read

wild guess how i get around it

I disagee...I think if there were a playoff, and Boise lost last night it still hurts them immensly. Not as much as it would have under the BCS but a 1 loss Boise  team would end up playing a much better team than say a 2 loss SEC team in a playoff, which in turn could end their season. The entire idea that a teams season can be squashed before Labor Day is just ridiculous to me.

Edit: This weekend's schedule has all the pieces to be epic.

ice grillin you

well i disagree as i do with 99% of the population on this issue but last night was the perfect example of one of the many games that would be hurt by the institution of a playoff which is why i brought it up in the first place

should also be noted that the only teams whose season can 100% end before labor day are non bcs conference teams

but i dont have any problem with that anyway...with only a 12 game season you shouldnt be able to lose multiple games and still win a national championship

the less losses you are allowed to have the more games that mean everything

The BCS system has been an improvement in that it at least attempts to match up #1 and #2.  The problem is that you have teams like Boise State that have historically gone undefeated but are left out in favor of a team with a loss and a tougher schedule.  There is really no fair way to settle an issue like that, but the logistics of a significant playoff are hard to get around.

I still think a playoff with 8 teams could be manageable and fit within the existing bowl system to a large extent.  The team that finishes at #9 would bitch a lot, but let them eat cake.

Keep the BCS...Top 8 BCS teams play in a playoff...It ain't rocket science, people.

This is true, and no matter how many teams you allow into a playoff system, there's always going to be that 1 team left out who believes they should get in.  The thing about it though is that once you get out of the top 4 or 5, it's fairly easy to rank teams after that with very little grey area.  In other words, the team that's ranked 8th is almost always definitively better than the team ranked #9.  It's rarely that easy when it comes to a few teams at the top of the rankings.  That's where the playoff comes in and settles the argument on the field instead of letting a computer or a bunch of geeky writers do it.
