Ok, here's my final Cliff Lee take.

Trading him was stupid.  Oswalt is a major upgrade to the rotation, but a downgrade from Lee.  The "$140mil cap" was total bs as a reason to trade Lee because they went over that limit with Oswalt.

no they didn't the Astros paid almost half his salary over the next 2 years.

Basically, Oswalt is costing the team a total of ~$15 million for 1 1/2 seasons.  Lee would have cost ~$9 million for 2010 but will command upwards of $20 million per year for 2011 and beyond, committing the team to likely over $100 million overall.

That said they erred significantly in dealing Lee when they did.  By most informed accounts, they could have shopped him around and received much better prospects in return.  But they chose to dump him quickly while fans were elated about Halladay.  And naturally, they could have just kept both for 2010 only and then received draft pick compensation if/when he signed elsewhere this offseason.

I'm not glad that Lee is struggling.  But hey, I'm glad Oswalt is mowing people down, and it's a damn good thing that Amaro pulled the trigger on the deal for him.

the philosophy of the trade is made moot by the Oswalt acquisition.

it's the actual trade that will live on a an awful move.  Three guys that appear to be stiffs for a Cy Young pitcher only making $9 million dollars.

the team is done next year anyway...their windows closes this season...you can already see tangible evidence of aging and its only going to get worse next year as everyone moves further along into their 30's

in hindsight the lee move may look "good" if hes out for the rest of the year and oswalt pitches well in the playoffs but whatever happens from here on out doesnt change the fact that the lee trade was horrifically bad

also say what you want about the prospects but oswalt cost three of them....lee would have cost none
i can take a phrase thats rarely heard...flip it....now its a daily word

igy gettin it done like warrick

I agree 100%, but those who still talk about the Oswalt deal costing more money....or that Lee is better...stfu

i'm hoping that this year was just a bad year for the offense and nothing more.  Jimmy may be getting older but Utley and Howard you would think are still in their prime.

the offensive numbers across baseball are down, so I'm hoping that the phils offense is just a victim of that.

Rollins is only about 3 weeks older than Utley, and Howard is only a year younger.

They still have a couple of prime years left, but i wouldn't look much further past 2012

The lee trade was terrible on all accounts, but it was atoned for with getting Oswalt, and with a three man rotation of Halladay, Hamels, Oswalt for 2 more season if you want it, I am perfectly fine with that and should keep them in a world series hunt regardless of the offense.

SunMo

i definitely have no illusions about anything past 2012, it's gonna get ugly, but hopefully they have another title or two by then.

a world series this year and they can do whatever the hell they want for at least the next five seasons

i still cant get over how ugly chokes contract is going to look in its later years

but win a ws and the lee trade bad contracts aging vets no farm system and wheels still announcing wont matter a bit

LOL...when they do win it all, you'll be first in line saying that a team with this bad of an offense got lucky and how they are the worst WS winners of all time.

no...in fact winning last years world series would have made them epic and i said that numerous times...beating the yankees for back to back titles and you live forever

beating tampa bay in the most anti climatic world series of all time for your only win = great for us but incredibly forgettable big picture wise

winning multiple titles with the same group puts you on the map for infinity

want a football analogy?....ok

no more titles for the phils and they are the colts with no more superbowls in the manning era...one lombardi against a hideous bears team in a terribly played rain soaked superbowl

win another world series and they are the steelers of the aughts and you could make an arguemtn they are the patriots
