also, why would saying your goin to pick up his 2012 option would hold up the deal.  just say you will and if you don't want to pay him after 2011 get rid of him.  obviously amir has no problem with getting rid of ace pitchers for next to nothing.

because you lose all credibility in future trades if you do that.  plus, i'm sure when something like this happens, it's not just going by word.  the phillies would probably have to pick up his option right there and then.

I would say if that's the case  than pick it up and just trade him anyway.  shtein changes in a year and a half.  if you have totrade a player you do irregardless of whose feelings get hurt.  if their that worried about payroll  they'll get rid of him for nothing as we've seen before.  it's a moot point anyway because I forgot his Ntc will probably still be intact.

the phillies have a decent amount of talent at the A level but its nothing crazy good or anything...they just have more than most because outside of HOF brown and unlike most other teams they have absolutely nothing at any other level

The Phillies have asked the Rays about B.J. Upton and Wade Davis, but someone familiar with the trade talks tells Jon Heyman of SI.com that the Phils may attempt to obtain prospects from Tampa Bay and flip them to Houston to acquire Roy Oswalt. Here's the latest on the Phillies, plus the rest of Heyman's rumors:

Roy Oswalt is making the most of his no-trade clause and it's slowing the Phillies down as they attempt to acquire him. Two people familiar with the discussions tell ESPN.com's Jayson Stark that Oswalt is asking that his 2012 option be picked up by any team that trades for him. The Phillies don't mind the idea of paying Oswalt $6MM this year and $16MM next year, but they are not comfortable guaranteeing the right-hander $16MM in 2012.

J.A. Happ would likely head to Houston in an Oswalt trade, probably along with some prospects from the lower minors. For now, the Phillies are pursuing Dan Haren and Ben Sheets, but are not actively pursuing Jeremy Guthrie, Fausto Carmona or Ricky Nolasco.

The Phillies are talking to a number of teams about Jayson Werth, but are demanding a lot in return. They asked the Rays for B.J. Upton or Wade Davis, and GM Ruben Amaro Jr. is not willing to take on any of the $2.8MM remaining on Werth's deal.

Actually the Phillies have a lot of talent at the lower levels.  Santana and Cosart alone both have incredibly high ceilings.   They have about 4-5 legit prospects at the low A/A level.  They just have absolutely nothing once you get to AA or AAA.

The problem with having all of your talent in A ball is so many prospects fizzle or develop injury problems before they make it to the majors.
